Reconstruction of the environmental evolution of a Sicilian saltmarsh (Italy)
2013
The present study deals with the reconstruction of the environmental evolution of a Trapani saltmarsh (southwestern Sicily, Italy) by combining different analytical approaches such as metal content evaluation, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry, and benthic foraminifera identification. A 41 cm core was collected in the sediments of a Trapani saltmarsh (southwestern Sicily, Italy) at a water depth of about 50 cm. Different time intervals were recognized, each characterized by peculiar features that testify different environmental conditions. In particular, the bottom layers of the sediment core (41–28 cm) comprised the lowest amount of mud fraction, only some selected met…
Concept of Biogenic Ferromanganese Crust Formation: Coccoliths as Bio-seeds in Crusts from Central Atlantic Ocean (Senghor Seamount/Cape Verde)
2011
At depths of 2,000 to 3,000 m, seamounts from the Cape Verde archipelago (Central Atlantic Ocean) are largely covered with ferromanganese crusts. Here we studied 60 to 150 mm thick crusts from the Senghor Seamount (depth: 2257.4 m). The crusts have a non lamellated texture and are covered with spherical nodules. The chemical composition shows a dominance of MnO2 (26.1%) and Fe2O3 (38.8%) with considerable amounts of Co (0.74%) and TiO2 (2.1%). Analysis by scanning electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) revealed a well defined compositional zonation of micro-layers; the distribution pattern of Mn does not match that of Fe. Analysis by high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed…
A late Eemian aridity pulse in central Europe during the last glacial inception
2005
How do ice ages begin? It's an obvious question to ask as we enjoy the relative luxury of an interglacial, but a hard one to answer. A look at past transitions may give some clues as to how this period will one day come to an end. A climate reconstruction based on sediments found beneath a lake in the Eifel mountains in Germany provides evidence of an extreme climate event lasting 468 years right at the end of the last interglacial. Dust storms, aridity, bushfires and the loss of trees associated with a warm climate coincided with a southward shift of the warm waters of the North Atlantic drift. In terms of insolation — the rate of delivery of the Sun's radiation to Earth — conditions then …
Diclidophora merlangi (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) on Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua.
2006
Diclidophora merlangi (Kuhn, in Nordmann, 1832), as species specific to whiting, Merlangius merlangus (Linnaeus, 1758), is reported and described for the first time on the gills of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua (Linnaeus, 1758). Of the about 1,200 cod examined in this article, only 2 specimens of D. merlangi occurred on 2 fish, suggesting that they represented accidental infections. The 2 specimens showed specific traits of D. merlangi, but their size was considerably smaller than that of D. merlangi on whiting. Principal-component analyses showed that the morphology of the specimens on cod was more similar to that of D. merlangi than those of other congeneric species from the North Atlantic, a…
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 (Digenea: Derogenidae) from Atlantic and Black Sea marine teleosts
2003
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 are described from marine teleosts: M. skrjabini (Vlasenko, 1931), the type species of the genus, from the gobiid Zosterisessor ophiocephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; M. bartolii sp. n. from the sparid Boops boops off the Atlantic coast of Spain; and M. minutus sp. n. from the gobiid Neogobius eurycephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. M. bartolii differs from all other Magnibursatus species in its larger sinus-sac (length >250 µm, width >150 µm) and the more posterior location of testes. This species is also unusual in that it occurs in the branchial chamber and on the gills of its host. M. minutus is distinguished by the distinct…
Myxobolus albin. sp. (Myxozoa) from the Gills of the Common GobyPomatoschistus micropsKrøyer (Teleostei: Gobiidae)
2009
A recent investigation into the myxozoan fauna of common gobies, Pomatoschistus microps, from the Forth Estuary in Scotland, revealed numerous myxosporean cysts within the gill cartilage. They were composed of polysporous plasmodia containing myxobolid spores that were morphologically different from the other known species of Myxobolus and from the myxosporeans previously recorded from this host (i.e. the ceratomyxid Ellipsomyxa gobii, infecting the gall bladder, and the kudoid Kudoa camarguensis, infecting the muscle tissues). Spores were ovoid, 9.4 x 9.1 microm with a thickness of 6.6 microm, with two pyriform polar capsules, the polar filaments of which had four to five turns. Molecular …
Glasgow ou l’Écosse urbaine dans les poèmes de Hugh MacDiarmid
2012
Hugh MacDiarmid is sometimes still thought a parochial poet, mostly interested in the depiction of rural Scotland. However, in the 1930s, he wrote several poems about the city of Glasgow but his work on urban predicaments has been largely forgotten. In his Glasgow sequence, MacDiarmid, along with many other writers in the 30s, redefines Scotland as an urban nation. Post-industrial Glasgow urges the whole country to ‘re-write’ itself and the canonical representation of rural Scotland to fade away. Scotland is mercilessly deconstructed in Glasgow 1938: Glasgow is no longer ‘a dear green place’, Scotland no longer a land of peasants but urban hell where filthy disease and dirty capitalism spre…
