Background Simulations of the Wide Field Imager of the ATHENA X-Ray Observatory
2011
The ATHENA X-ray Observatory-IXO is a planned multinational orbiting X-ray observatory with a focal length of 11.5m. ATHENA aims to perform pointed observations in an energy range from 0.1 keV to 15 keV with high sensitivity. For high spatial and timing resolution imaging and spectroscopic observations the 640x640 pixel^2 large DePFET-technology based Wide field Imager (WFI) focal plane detector, providing a field of view of 18 arcsec will be the main detector. Based on the actual mechanics, thermal and shielding design we present estimates for the WFI cosmic ray induced background obtained by the use of Monte-Carlo simulations and possible background reduction measures.
A novel arousal-based individual screening reveals susceptibility and resilience to PTSD-like phenotypes in mice
2021
Translational animal models for studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are valuable for elucidating the poorly understood neurobiology of this neuropsychiatric disorder. These models should encompass crucial features, including persistence of PTSD-like phenotypes triggered after exposure to a single traumatic event, trauma susceptibility/resilience and predictive validity. Here we propose a novel arousal-based individual screening (AIS) model that recapitulates all these features. The AIS model was designed by coupling the traumatization (24 h restraint) of C57BL/6 J mice with a novel individual screening. This screening consists of z-normalization of post-trauma changes in startle …
Na+ -dependent neutral amino acid transporters A, ASC, and N of the blood-brain barrier: mechanisms for neutral amino acid removal.
2004
Four Na+-dependent transporters of neutral amino acids (NAA) are known to exist in the abluminal membranes (brain side) of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This article describes the kinetic characteristics of systems A, ASC, and N that, together with the recently described Na+-dependent system for large NAA (Na+-LNAA), provide a basis for understanding the functional organization of the BBB. The data demonstrate that system A is voltage dependent (3 positive charges accompany each molecule of substrate). Systems ASC and N are not voltage dependent. Each NAA is a putative substrate for at least one system, and several NAA are transported by as many as three. System A transports Pro, Ala, His,…
The effects of short-term glyphosate-based herbicide exposure on insect gene expression profiles
2023
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the most frequently used herbicides worldwide. The use of GBHs is intended to tackle weeds, but GBHs have been shown to affect the life-history traits and antioxidant defense system of invertebrates found in agroecosystems. Thus far, the effects of GBHs on detoxification pathways among invertebrates have not been sufficiently investigated. We performed two different experiments—1) the direct pure glyphosate and GBH treatment, and 2) the indirect GBH experiment via food—to examine the possible effects of environmentally relevant GBH levels on the survival of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) and the expression profiles of their deto…
Abrupt Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE in Europe - The event ecology, possible causes and implications
2019
The study, based on the examination of 70 published and unpublished pollen profiles from Poland and supplementary data from the surrounding regions, shows that an abrupt, episodic Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE was a much more widespread event than has been previously reported, spanning large areas of the temperate and boreal zones in Europe. The data from Poland suggest that the decline was roughly synchronous and most likely occurred between the 9th and 10th centuries, with strong indications for the 10th century. The pollen data indicate that human impacts were not a major factor in the event. Instead, we hypothesize that one or a series of abrupt climatic…
Piesātinājuma spektroskopijas signālu modelēšana 87Rb D2 pārejai AC-Štarka efekta ietekmē
2016
Darba pamatā ir piesātinājuma spektroskopijas eksperimenta $^{85}Rb$/$^{87}Rb$ planajā šūnā absorbcijas signālu aproksimācija. No $^{87}$Rb D2 $F_g$=2 aproksimācijas datiem tiek veikti SSS pārēju frekvences pārbaudes (D. Steck "Rubidium 87 D Line Data"). Tiek modelētas magnetiskā dipola $\mathcal{A}$ un elektriskā kvadrupola $\mathcal{B}$ konstantes un ar to inkorporāciju $\Delta E_{HFS}$ ir salīdzināti ierosinātas SSS termi, veikta analīze par $\mathcal{A}$, $\mathcal{B}$ atkarību no lauka jaudas. Veiktā arī $F_g=2 \rightarrow F_e$ \textit{VSOPS} relatīvo stiprumu pārbaude. Eksperiments veikts ar Kvantu Frekvenču Ķemmi, kura deva iespēju iegūt pārēju absolūtas frekvences vērtības kombināci…

Activation of the first component of complement, C1: comparison of the effect of sixteen different enzymes on serum C1.
1983
In this study, the effect of sixteen different enzymes on serum C1 and its subcomponents was investigated. The sixteen enzymes could be divided into three groups. First, enzymes which activate native C1: trypsin (optimal concentration 2.4 x 10(-4) mM); alpha-chymotrypsin (2.3 x 10(3) mM); thrombin (1.0 x 10(-5) mM); plasmin (1.9 x 10(-5) mM); elastase (5.8 x 10(-5) mM); pronase (3.0 x 10(-6) mM). All these enzymes are serine esterase and activate native serum C1 bound to EAC4 at the given concentration within 10 min at 30 degrees C. Furthermore, native C1 inhibited by a pentosanpolysulfoester, Sp54, is unable to undergo the internal activation but can be externally activated by the serine e…
FEM based prediction of phase transformations during Friction Stir Welding of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy
2013
Abstract Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process patented in 1991 by TWI; initially adopted to weld aluminum alloys, it is now being successfully used also for high resistant materials. Welding of titanium alloys by traditional fusion welding techniques presents several difficulties due to high material reactivity with oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen with consequent embrittlement of the joint. In this way FSW represents a cost effective and high quality solution. The final mechanical properties of the joints are strictly connected to the microstructural evolutions, in terms of phase change, occurring during the process. In the paper a 3D FEM model of the FSW welding proc…
Dilatant plasticity applied to Alpine collision: ductile void growth in the intraplate area beneath the Eifel volcanic field
1998
The Eifel is located in the middle of the European plate far away from any active plate boundary, yet it appears to be a maximum of intraplate tectonic activity. A map of intraplate seismic energy flow shows that the Eifel is linked to the Alpine collisional belt via a narrow seismoactive shear zone. Two parallel Quaternary volcanic zones (the East Eifel Volcanic Zone EEVZ and the West Eifel Volcanic Zone WEVZ) line up with the seismogenic shear zone. Xenoliths ejected from these volcanic lineaments indicate upper mantle shearing by dynamic recrystallization textures and metasomatized chemistry. Important CO2-dominated mantle degassing observed in mineral springs, lakes or dry degassing sug…
