Kinetic characterization of mitochondrial complex I inhibitors using annonaceous acetogenins
1999
The NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain is by far the largest and most complicated of the proton-translocating enzymes involved in the oxidative phosphorylation. Many clues regarding the electron pathways from matrix NADH to membrane ubiquinone and the links of this process with the translocation of protons are highly controversial. Different types of inhibitors become valuable tools to dissect the electron and proton pathways of this complex enzyme. Therefore, further knowledge of the mode of action of complex I inhibitors is needed to understand the underlying mechanism of energy conservation. This study presents for the first time a detailed …
Delamination and recycling of Archaean crust caused by gravitational instabilities
2013
The volume of Archaean crust preserved at Earth’s surface today is low. Thermodynamic calculations and geodynamic modelling show that the thick, primary crust that would have formed on a much hotter Archaean Earth was denser than the underlying mantle, and would have therefore been recycled back into the mantle as drips.
Deep conservation of bivalve nacre proteins highlighted by shell matrix proteomics of the Unionoida Elliptio complanata and Villosa lienosa.
2016
The formation of the molluscan shell nacre is regulated to a large extent by a matrix of extracellular macromolecules that are secreted by the shell-forming tissue, the mantle. This so-called ‘calcifying matrix’ is a complex mixture of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides that is assembled and occluded within the mineral phase during the calcification process. Better molecular-level characterization of the substances that regulate nacre formation is still required. Notable advances in expressed tag sequencing of freshwater mussels, such as Elliptio complanata and Villosa lienosa , provide a pre-requisite to further characterize bivalve nacre proteins by a proteomic approach. In this…
Quality of life and sustainable urban redevelopment
2021
The urban landscape is intended as a place of life, meeting, as a dynamic space natural or anthropic to explore, discover or reinterpret. In this scenario, the relationship between the population and the urban landscape is very important as, on the one hand, the landscape promotes the consolidation of territorial identities, and on the other, it requires a certain level of competence, availability, and awareness to take responsibility for the actions that affect it. By acquiring a social conscience, it will be possible to consolidate local and regional identities and diversity, recognising an interest in participation in public decisions. Some national and international urban realities, taki…
Redox estimates through trace elements partitioning: application on two Italian volcanoes, model comparison and overview on different geodynamic envi…
2021
Oxygen fugacity of Earth’s mantle is one of the most debated issues of petrology. While is evident that the arc-related magmas are more oxidized than MORB and intraplate magmas, however, is not yet possible to produce a model that can uniquely determine this thermodynamic parameter for the depth of the Earth. Furthermore, there is not a clear cause that create this difference of redox conditions between volcanic products. Recently, several experimental models based on the V partitioning between olivine and mafic melt were published and proposed as tools for investigating the redox state of mantle melts for different geodynamic environments. During this PhD we have applied different oxybarom…
