Ecological, morphological and genetic characterization of sympatric Haemonchus spp. parasites of domestic ruminants in Mauritania

1995

SUMMARYThe 4 species of ruminants (dromedary, zebu cattle, sheep and goat) in arid areas of Mauritania harboured Haemonchus spp. as the most frequent internal parasite. This was a rare situation where the 3 putative species, H. longistipes (dromedary), H. placet (zebu cattle) and H. contortus (sheep and goat) occurred sympatrically. The study was undertaken on hosts slaughtered at the Nouakchott abattoir, on the basis of monthly collection of worms. The environment was very unfavourable to H. placei and unfavourable to H. contortus, as intensity of infection remained low throughout the year, whereas infection in the dromedary was 10 to 20-fold higher. The survival strategies during the long…

Time-to-event analysis of mastitis at first-lactation in Valle del Belice ewes

2007

A time-to-event study for mastitis at first-lactation in Valle del Belice ewes was conducted, using survival analysis with an animal model. The goals were to evaluate the effect of lambing season and level of milk production on the time from lambing to the day when a ewe experienced a test-day with a recorded SCC greater than or equal to 750,000 cells/ml, and to estimate, for this trait, its heritability and the percentage of variation explained by the flock-year of lambing effect. A dataset with 2468 first-lactation records, collected from 1998 to 2003 in Valle del Belice ewes allocated in 17 flocks, was used. The Cox model used included lambing season and total milk yield adjusted for lac…

La partecipazione associativa al fenomeno sportivo nell'esperienza italiana

2015

The paper analyzes the 'associative participation' to sports phenomenon in the Italian experience. Particular attention is paid to the role that sports groups assign to the athlete, especially where practices and regulations continue to compress disproportionately his freedom of association.

A discrete-element model for viscoelastic deformation and fracture of glacial ice

2015

a b s t r a c t A discrete-element model was developed to study the behavior of viscoelastic materials that are allowed to fracture. Applicable to many materials, the main objective of this analysis was to develop a model specifically for ice dynamics. A realistic model of glacial ice must include elasticity, brittle fracture and slow viscous deformations. Here the model is described in detail and tested with several benchmark simulations. The model was used to simulate various ice-specific applications with resulting flow rates that were compatible with Glen's law, and produced under fragmentation fragment-size distributions that agreed with the known analytical and experimental results.

Nutrient intakes of children aged 1-2 years as a function of milk consumption, cows' milk or growing-up milk.

2012

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the nutritional adequacy of diets in early childhood as a function of milk intake, cows’ milk (CM) or growing-up milk (GUM).DesignFrom a cross-sectional food consumption survey, two groups of children aged 1–2 years were defined: Group CM fed exclusively on CM ≥ 250 ml/d and Group GUM fed on GUM ≥ 250 ml/d. Proportions of children at risk of nutrient excess or insufficiency were estimated relative to the French Recommended Daily Allowances, Estimated Average Requirements or Adequate Intakes.SettingParents participating in the survey were recruited from all regions of France by a polling organization. Distribution was adjusted to that of the French population.Sub…

Effects of a vitamin D3 analogue in a rat model of bladder outlet obstruction

2006

OBJECTIVES To explore the effect of the vitamin D3 analogue, BXL-628, on some of the consequences of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), e.g. hypertrophy and loss of contractile function, as vitamin D3 and BXL-628 inhibit prostate and bladder cell growth in vitro, and there are receptors for vitamin D in rat and human bladder. MATERIAL AND METHODS In female rats, BOO was produced by a standardized method; one group received daily BXL-628 (150 µg/kg per day) and the remaining rats received vehicle. Sham-operated rats received BXL-628 or vehicle. After 2 weeks, the conscious rats were assessed by cystometry. Plasma calcium levels were determined and in vitro contractility assessed at the end of…

Linguistic Pathologies in Ancient Greece: Aristotele on Aphasia

1999

This papers deals with linguistic pathologies in ancient Greece, especially in Aristotle. All the author and literary text before Aristotele (Herodotus, Plato and so on) are considered. In the Corpus Aristotelicum there several passages about aphasia. Probl. , books x and XI are particularly relevant. In the biological works we read that little children , when they learn language , stutter. They behave, then as people affected by psellotes and traulotes. Ischonophonia is the most severe language desease Aristotle deals with: It consists of the distruction of rhythm and prosodic features of language. So, it can be concluded that acquisition ad loose of language has the same shape and pattern…

Geochemistry of Chromian Spinels from the Indo-Myanmar Ophiolite Belt of Northeastern India

2015

Chromite is commonly used for deciphering the petrogenesis and geodynamic setting of ultramafic rocks. Chromespinels from the Indo-Myanmar ophiolite belt occurring in the form of podiform chromitites associated with the mantle sequence and associated volcanic rocks are studied to characterise their geochemical composition. We have measured major and trace element concentrations of the chrome-spinels. Cr/(Cr+Al) (Cr#) and Mg/(Mg+Fe 2+ ) (Mg#) range from 66 to 70 and 66 to 69 respectively in the chromitite and 47 to 56 and 67 to 70 in volcanic spinel. The computed crystallization conditions show that the studied samples crystallized in an upper mantle environment. Using the chrome spinel comp…

EC Practice in the WTO: How Wide is the "Scope for Manouvre"?

2004

The EC’s implementation record in the WTO seems to reflect an attitude that, in accordance with the view traditionally maintained by the European Court of Justice from International Fruit to Portugal, finds its cornerstone in the principle of negotiations with a view to achieving mutually satisfactory solutions, even beyond the limits set by the DSU. Following these premises, the purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact that has been exercised on the EC’s contentious practice by interpretations of the WTO system given by the EC courts, in fine tuning with the stand taken by the EC’s political bodies. After having considered the legal and political reasons behind the case-law of the Co…

The Combitube, Self-Inflating Bulb, and Colorimetric Carbon Dioxide Detector to Advance Airway Management in the First Echelon of the Battlefield

2006

Combat lifesavers and Army medics are regular combat soldiers who possess skills that enable them to provide lifesaving assistance to combat casualties. Although their training is not equal to that of paramedics, combat lifesavers and Army medics are trained to assess casualties for airway obstruction, as well as the presence or absence of spontaneous ventilation. They are also familiar with the same basic airway maneuvers that are required for blind insertion of the esophageal-tracheal double-lumen airway (ETDLA). Use of the ETDLA in combination with an esophageal detector device and a colorimetric carbon dioxide detector would require skill similar to that which they already possess in pe…
