Ieguldītāju un valsts strīdu izšķiršana no Eiropas Savienības tiesību perspektīvas

2016

The carabid Pterostichus melanarius uses chemical cues for opportunistic predation and saprophagy but not for finding healthy prey

2017

The sentinel prey method can quantify predation pressure in various habitats. Real prey is assumed to more realistically mimic the predator experience but the predator can rarely be identified. Artificial prey made of plasticine may lack real chemical cues, but provides information about predator identity. However, the relationship between predation pressure registered by artificial versus real prey is not clear. We tested the relative attractiveness of artificial caterpillars, and intact, wounded, or dead larvae of the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) for the carabid predator Pterostichus melanarius Illiger (Coleoptera: Carabidae). P. melanarius adults were attracted to dead caterpillars …

The transformation of the Horatian Sabine farm in Persius? Satire 6

2020

The purpose of this article is to focus on the motif of the countryside in Roman satire. In particular, it aspires to study the way the Sabine farm is delineated in Horace's Satire 2.6 and later in his Epistles, in order to elucidate the evolution of this motif in Persius? 6th Satire. In this poem, Persius addresses Caesius Bassus, who retreats to Sabine to seek poetic inspiration, but seems trapped in the paths of earlier poetry and cannot attain bliss, while the poet achieves it in the port of Luna.

Antler Malformations of Cervidae Species in Opole Voivodeship

2017

Hunting Law regulations strictly determines which males of quarry species may be harvested during the season. The age and the antlers of the individual play here an important role. The exceptions are the individuals with malformed and long spiked antlers, that is in a form significantly different from the desirable forms described in guidelines by the Chief Hunting Council. Anomalies in shape, structure and size of antlers are obligatory condition for harvesting the individual. It is generally accepted that such individuals are weaker, less valuable, have defective genes, are sick or injured, and are dangerous for conspecific during the rut. The scientific explanations for the development o…

Asymptotic theory of resonant tunneling in quantum waveguides of variable cross-section

2008

Halkaisijaltaan muunnellun kvanttiaaltojohtimen kapenemat toimivat tehokkaina potentiaalivalleina elektronin pitkittäissuuntaiselle liikkeelle. Sarafanov kuvailee väitöskirjassaan asymptoottisesti elektroniaallon etenemistä kvanttiaaltojohtimessa, jossa on kaksi kapenemaa. Aaltoluvun k oletetaan olevan ensimmäisen ja toisen kynnysluvun välissä, jolloin vain sisään tuleva ja poismenevä aalto voivat edetä jokaisessa aaltojohtimen päässä äärettömyydessä. Väitöskirjassa esi…

Porównanie efektywności katalizatorów hybrydowych z matrycą mikro- i nanoanatazu w procesie fotodegradacji 4-nitrofenolu w wodzie

2016

Fotokatalizatory hybrydowe otrzymuje się m.in. poprzez impregnację anatazu ftalocyjaninami. Dzięki temu proces fotoutleniania związków aromatycznych może zachodzić z większą szybkością. Celem badań było porównanie efektywności katalizatorów hybrydowych z mat…

Extending the Limits of Nature. Political Animals, Artefacts, and Social Institutions

2020

This essay discusses how medieval authors from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries dealt with a philosophical problem that social institutions pose for the Aristotelian dichotomy between natural and artificial entities. It is argued that marriage, political community, and language provided a particular challenge for the conception that things which are designed by human beings are artefacts. Medieval philosophers based their arguments for the naturalness of social institutions on the anthropological view that human beings are political animals by nature, but this strategy required rethinking the borderline between nature and art. The limits of nature were extended, as social institution…

Friction of Shear-Fracture Zones

2017

A shear fracture of brittle solids under compression undergoes a substantial evolution from the initial microcracking to a fully formed powder-filled shear zone. Experiments covering the entire process are relatively easy to conduct, but they are very difficult to investigate in detail. Numerically, the large strain limit has remained a challenge. An efficient simulation model and a custom-made experimental device are employed to test to what extent a shear fracture alone is sufficient to drive material to spontaneous selflubrication. A “weak shear zone” is an important concept in geology, and a large number of explanations, specific for tectonic conditions, have been proposed. We demonstra…

Rats with elevated genetic risk for metabolic syndrome exhibit cognitive deficiencies when young

2021

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Using polygenic rat models selectively bred for high and low intrinsic exercise capacity and simultaneously modelling as low and high innate risk factor for MetS respectively, we have previously shown that adult animals with lower exercise capacity/higher MetS risk perform poorly in tasks requiring flexible cognition. However, it is not known whether these deficits in cognition are present already at young age. Also, it is unclear whether the high risk genome is related also to lower-level cognition, such as sensory gating measured as prepulse inhibition. In this study, young and adult (5-8 weeks and ∼9 months) rats sel…
