A review of carbonatitic magmatism in the Parana-Angola-Namibia (PAN) system.

2007

Mesozoic to Cenozoic alkaline-carbonatitic complexes from southern Brazil, Angola and Namibia occur along main tectonic lineaments. In general, the alkaline-carbonatite complexes show intrusive/subintrusive, subcircular or oval shaped structures and are indicative of high upwelling energy. Processes of liquid immiscibility from trachytic-phonolitic liquids, starting from parental alkaline mafic magmas are believed to have generated carbonatitic liquids, as suggested by field relationships and geochemical characteristics. Ca-, Mg- and Fe-carbonatites are widespread even in the same complex. The occurrences comprise three main chronogroups, i.e. 1) Early Cretaceous (Eastern Paraguay; Brazil, …

Exceptional sea turtle nest records in 2011 suggest an underestimated nesting potential in Sicily (Italy)

2012

We report seven nesting events by loggerhead sea turtles in Sicily (Italy) in 2011. In comparison to past records, this number is relatively high and may be at least in part due to an awareness campaign carried out in 2011 to solicit such reports. This suggests that Sicily may host a much higher nesting activity than previously thought and higher monitoring effort is recommended, especially in certain coastal tracts. Sand temperatures and incubation periods indicate that the beaches monitored so far in the southern coast are not optimal for development, resulting in low hatching success, and produce a majority of males. Five 2011 nests and two past nests from the same area had mtDNA haploty…

First report of the scavenging isopod Natatolana neglecta (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cirolanidae) feeding on a sea turtle

2019

A juvenile male loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was found dead in April 2015, entangled in a trammel net on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Post-mortem examination revealed the presence of ninety-five isopods dispersed in the coelomic cavity, and inside the oesophagus and skull. All individuals found scavenging on the sea turtle were identified as Natatolana neglecta (Hansen, 1890) (Isopoda: Cirolanidae). Genetic analysis of the isopod gut contents showed that they were feeding on turtle tissue, confirming that N. neglecta can also attack dead sea turtles. This study shows the value of cirolanids as potential indicators of the cause of death in stranded sea turtles.

Looking for Feminist Pragmatist Roots of Degrowth Ideas: Jane Addams, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Caroline Bartlett Crane

2022

The aim of the paper is a search of feminist pragmatist roots of degrowth ideas. The starting point is the question of whether in views of the members of the Progressive Movement the idea of progress has always implied the economic (and industrial) growth. Searching for counter-examples leads me to ideas of ecofeminism and feminist critics of capitalism in the previous turn of the centuries. The ideas of ecofeminism were developed by women associated with the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago and the social settlement Hull House. They observed a link between the exploitation of subordinate members of a society and the degradation of nature in Western cultural values. The …

Fetuin-A and Cystatin C Are Endogenous Inhibitors of Human Meprin Metalloproteases

2010

Meprin α and β, zinc metalloproteinases, play significant roles in inflammation, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), possibly by activating cytokines, like interleukin 1β, interleukin 18, or tumor growth factor α. Although a number of potential activators for meprins are known, no endogenous inhibitors have been identified. In this work, we analyzed the inhibitory potential of human plasma and identified bovine fetuin-A as an endogenous meprin inhibitor with a K(i) (inhibition constant) of 4.2 × 10(-5) M for meprin α and a K(i) of 1.1 × 10(-6) M meprin β. This correlated with data obtained for a fetuin-A homologue from carp (nephrosin inhibitor) that revealed a potent meprin α and β…

Computed tomography detects changes in contrast agent diffusion after collagen cross-linking typical to natural aging of articular cartilage

2011

SummaryObjectiveThe effect of threose-induced collagen cross-linking on the mechanical and diffusive properties of cartilage was investigated in vitro. In particular, we investigated the potential of Contrast Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) to detect changes in articular cartilage after increased collagen cross-linking, which is an age-related phenomenon.MethodsOsteochondral plugs (Ø=6.0mm, n=28) were prepared from intact bovine patellae (n=7). Two of the four adjacent samples, prepared from each patella, were treated with threose to increase the collagen cross-linking, while the other two specimen served as paired controls. One sample pair was mechanically tested and then mechanically …

Volumetric changes of articular cartilage during stress relaxation in unconfined compression

2000

The time-dependent lateral expansion and load relaxation of cartilage cylinders subjected to unconfined compression were simultaneously recorded. These measurements were used to (1) test the assumption of incompressibility for articular cartilage, (2) measure the Poisson's ratio of articular cartilage in compression and (3) investigate the relationship between stress relaxation and volumetric change. Mechanical tests were performed on fetal, calf, and adult humeral head articular cartilage. The instantaneous Poisson's ratio of adult cartilage was 0.49+/-0.08 (mean+S.D.), thus confirming the assumption of incompressibility for this tissue. The instantaneous Poisson's ratio was significantly …

Nondestructive fluorescence-based quantification of threose-induced collagen cross-linking in bovine articular cartilage.

2012

Extensive collagen cross-linking affects the mechanical competence of articular cartilage: it can make the cartilage stiffer and more brittle. The concentrations of the best known cross-links, pyridinoline and pentosidine, can be accurately determined by destructive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We explore a nondestructive evaluation of cross-linking by using the intrinsic fluorescence of the intact cartilage. Articular cartilage samples from bovine knee joints were incubated in threose solution for 40 and 100 h to increase the collagen cross-linking. Control samples without threose were also prepared. Excitation-emission matrices at wavelengths of 220 to 950 nm were acquir…

Going beyond histology. Synchrotron micro-computed tomography as a methodology for biological tissue characterization: from tissue morphology to indi…

2009

Current light microscopic methods such as serial sectioning, confocal microscopy or multiphoton microscopy are severely limited in their ability to analyse rather opaque biological structures in three dimensions, while electron optical methods offer either a good three-dimensional topographic visualization (scanning electron microscopy) or high-resolution imaging of very thin samples (transmission electron microscopy). However, sample preparation commonly results in a significant alteration and the destruction of the three-dimensional integrity of the specimen. Depending on the selected photon energy, the interaction between X-rays and biological matter provides semi-transparency of the spe…
