Real-Time Routing Selection in Flexible Manufacturing Systems

1993

Routing flexibility is one of the main peculiarities of Flexible Manufacturing Systems. This paper proposes three methods for real-time routing selection. The first one makes decisions comparing the current workload of machines in each alternative path. The second method considers the current workloads at the bottleneck machines in each allowed route. The third approach makes real-time decisions minimizing a merit index that represents a measure of the still required resource amount. The index is computed by short discrete-event simulation runs. Some case studies evaluate and compare the proposed approaches.

Slope threshold for overland flow resistance on sandy soils

2021

Recent research on rill flows recognised that an 18% slope can be used to distinguish between ‘gentle’ and ‘steep’ slope cases for the detected differences in hydraulic (flow depth and velocity) and sediment transport variables (flow transport capacity, actual sediment load). The effects of slope on flow velocity, friction factor and transport capacity and their interactions affect process-based erosion modelling. The main aim of this paper is to investigate, for the first time, how slope affects the overland flow resistance on sandy soils, which are characterised by loose particles readily available to be transported and deposited. Using literature measurements carried out in sandy soils f…

Slope threshold in rill flow resistance

2022

The applicability of a theoretical rill flow resistance equation, based on the integration of a power velocity distribution, was tested using measurements carried out in mobile and fixed bed rills, shaped on plots having different slopes (9, 14, 15, 18, 22, 24, 25 and 26%) and soil textures (clay fractions ranging from 32.7% to 73% and silt of 19.9–30.9%), and flume measurements available in the literature. The Darcy–Weisbach friction factor resulted dependent on the slope, Froude number, Reynolds number and clay and silt percentages, used as variables representative of soil transportability and detachability, respectively. This theoretical approach was applied to two different databases di…

Study on heat transfer coefficients during cooling of PET bottles for food beverages

2015

The heat transfer properties of different cooling systems dealing with Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate (PET) bottles were investigated. The heat transfer coefficient (Ug) was measured in various fluid dynamic conditions. Cooling media were either air or water. It was shown that heat transfer coefficients are strongly affected by fluid dynamics conditions, and range from 10 W/m2 K to nearly 400 W/m2 K. PET bottle thickness effect on Ug was shown to become relevant under faster fluid dynamics regimes.

Court Congestion and the Decision to Litigate or Settle

2008

This paper analyses the problem of court congestion. We focus on how individual's decision whether to commit an illegal act and victim's decision whether to bring a suit are influenced by the presence of court congestion. We show that the standard results of the perception models may be totally reverse in presence of congestion.

Evaluation of microbial diversity during the manufacture of Fior di Latte di Agerola, a traditional raw milk pasta-filata cheese of the Naples area

2006

Microbial diversity of the raw milk for the production of Fior di Latte di Agerola and its changes during cheesemaking were studied. Viable counts showed that at the end of curd ripening, loads of lactic acid bacteria, both mesophilic and thermophilic rods and cocci, higher than those commonly evidenced in similar cheeses produced by using natural or commercial starters, were detected. Identification of 272 isolates, supported by molecular diagnostic aids, evidenced representative cultures of a high number of bacterial taxa of interest as participating in the process, although most of the isolates belonged to Lactococcus lactis and Lactobacillus helveticus species. RAPD-PCR and REA-PFGE bio…

Premessa

2021

Reading the city sub specie gastronomica means observing the multiple relationships that the language of food and that of space entertain each other. What is highlighted in thie volume is the social value that founds, by merging them, the links between food and cities in the different branches that the authors propose to us. We therefore speak of restaurants and markets, kitchens and dining rooms, supermarkets and taverns, street food and fast food, food and wine tourism and domestic imprisonments.

Foodscapes: cibo in città

2021

Reading the city from a gastronomical point of view means observing the multiple relationships that the language of food and the language of space have with each other. It means selecting and making relevant some areas of the urban text and some parts of food discourse, electing them as representative segments of wider social dynamics. From this perspective, the city becomes a litmus test of the food and wine scene, a reflection of dishes and tastes, food orientations and consumption trends. On the other hand, food outlets become a mirror of urban flows, of ways of living in neighbourhoods, of social and convivial practices. And of their transformations, because it is clear that the city ev…
