Mechanism of brittle fracture in a ductile 316 alloy during stress corrosion

Abstract The ductile f.c.c. 316 alloy is shown to exhibit brittle transgranular (and intergranular) stress corrosion cracking in a 153°C MgCl2 solution at free corrosion potential. Tests on smooth and pre-cracked specimens are performed to identify the mechanisms of fracture. Transgranular cracking is related to both a discontinuous microcleavage mainly on {100} planes and a microshearing on {111} planes. A new physical modelization is proposed to explain the brittle transgranular cracking. It is based on the influence of the localized anodic dissolution on the enhancement of the plasticity at the crack tip. Solution for the fragment-size distribution in a crack-branching model of fragmentation

It is well established that rapidly propagating cracks in brittle material are unstable such that they generate side branches. It is also known that cracks are attracted by free surfaces, which means that they attract each other. This information is used here to formulate a generic model of fragmentation in which the small-size part of the fragment-size distribution results from merged crack branches in the damage zones along the paths of the propagating cracks. This model is solved under rather general assumptions for the fragment-size distribution. Sākotnēji L-sistēmas bija paredzētas vienkāršu augu un organismu aprakstam, taču ar laiku sistēmu pielietojuma spektrs pieauga. Bakalaura darbā tiks apskatītas iespējas pielietot L-sistēmu formālo aprakstu, lai ģenerētu 2D un 3D augu modeļus. Celem przeprowadzonych badań była ocena właściwości przeciwgrzybowych ekstraktów z liści i korzenia pokrzywy zwyczajnej wobec Fusarium proliferatum. Ocenę właściwości antagonistycznych ekstraktów w stężeniach 2,5, 5,0, 10, 20 i 40% przeprowadzono metodą hodowlano-płytkową z zastosowaniem podłoży PDA pomidorowego. Hodowlę prowadzono w temp. 26ºC przez 9 dni, dokonując pomiarów co 1-2 dni. Kontrolę pozytywną stanowił Topsin M 500 S.C, a kontrolę negatywną woda destylowana. Określono indeks kiełkowania zarodników, indeks tempa wzrostu oraz stopień redukcji liniowego wzrostu Fusarium sp. Metrology has been successfully used in the last decade to quantify use-wear on stone tools. Such techniques have been mostly applied to fine-grained rocks (chert), while studies on coarse-grained raw materials have been relatively infrequent. In this study, confocal microscopy was employed to investigate polished surfaces on a coarse-grained lithology, quartzite. Design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of thiophene analogues of chalcones.

Chalcones are characterized by possessing an enone moiety between two aromatic rings. A series of chalcone-like agents, in which the double bond of the enone system is embedded within a thiophene ring, were synthesized and evaluated for antiproliferative activity and inhibition of tubulin assembly and colchicine binding to tubulin. The replacement of the double bond with a thiophene maintains antiproliferative activity and therefore must not significantly alter the relative conformation of the two aryl rings. The composition of fluids stored in the central Mexican lithospheric mantle: Inferences from noble gases and CO2 in mantle xenoliths

We present the first isotopic (noble gases and CO2) characterization of fluid inclusions coupled to Raman microspectroscopy analyses in mantle xenoliths from Central Mexico, a geodynamically complex area where the Basin and Range extension was superimposed on the Farallon subduction (terminated at 28 Ma).
