Oral verruciform xanthoma : report of 13 new cases and review of the literature

2018

Background Oral verruciform xanthoma (OVX) is a rare lesion. The purpose of the present study is to describe the clinical features of 13 OVXs and review all cases reported in the English literature. Material and Methods Thirteen cases of OVX diagnosed during a 47-year period were retrospectively collected. The patients’ gender and age, as well as the main clinical features of the lesions were retrieved from the biopsy request forms. Pubmed®, Scopus® and Google ScholarTM electronic databases were searched with the key word “verruciform xanthoma”. Only cases of histologically confirmed OVX were included in the study. Results The 13 OVXs represented approximately 0.04% of 35,617 biopsies acces…

Comparison of the subjective satisfaction of the donor site morbidity : free radial forearm flap versus anterolateral thigh flap for reconstruction i…

2018

Background The purpose of the study was to compare the differences of the subjective satisfaction of the donor site morbidity between the free radial forearm flap (FRFF) and anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) for tongue reconstruction. Material and Methods One hundred and nineteen patients underwent FRFF or ALTF reconstruction were retrospectively evaluated by a standardized self-established donor site morbidity questionnaire which included 5 domains, sensibility, movement disabilities, cosmetics, social activities and general impacts on the quality of life. Results The Cronbach’s coefficient alpha of the questionnaire was 0.707. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the 5 items of the…

Demographic profile of oral nonodontogenic cysts in a Brazilian population

2013

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and demographic characteristics of oral non- odontogenic cysts (ONOC) in a Brazilian population over a 53-year period and to compare this data with the literature. Study D esign: A total of 20.391 biopsies records were evaluated, from April/1959 to August/2012. Cases of oral developmental cysts were selected. Data regarding age, gender, time of evolution, and anatomic site of all cases were collected. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Among 20.391 oral biopsies, 71 (0.35%) met the criteria of ONOC. Females accounted for 50.70% of all cases. The mean age observed was 38.14 years (range: 5-88 years). …

The tongue as an alternative donor site for graft urethroplasty: A pilot study

2006

Purpose: Urethroplasty with a buccal mucosal graft provides excellent clinical results but it may also cause oral complications in some cases. The mucosa covering the lateral and under surface of the tongue is identical in structure with that lining the rest of the oral cavity. We evaluated LMGs for urethroplasty.Materials and Methods: From January 2001 to September 2004, 8 men 34 to 65 years old (mean age 46.1) with urethral strictures 1.5 to 4.5 cm long were selected for 1-stage dorsal onlay urethroplasty. The site of the harvest graft was the lateral mucosal lining of the tongue. Postoperatively all patients were followed with urethrography, uroflowmetry, cystourethrography and flexible …

Lingual mucosal graft urethroplasty for anterior urethral reconstruction.

2008

Objective: Evaluate the use of lingual mucosal graft (LMG) in anterior urethral strictures. Methods: From January 2001 to December 2006, 29 men (mean age, 48.5 yr) with anterior urethral strictures underwent graft urethroplasty with LMG. The mean length of stricture was 3.6 cm. Patients with bulbar, penile, or bulbopenile strictures received one-stage dorsal free graft urethroplasties. In patients with failed hypospadias repair we performed a two-stage urethroplasty. Criteria for successful reconstruction were spontaneous voiding with no postvoid residual urine and no postoperative instrumentation of any kind. Clinical assessment included the donor site morbidity. Results: Mean follow-up was …

Microcirculation in the healing of surgical wounds in the oral cavity.

2013

Abstract. The aim of this research is to evaluate in vivo the characteristics of microcirculation after taking a biopsy sample from the oral mucosa. 20 patients were recruited to the study and all underwent an oral mucosa biopsy for the excision of benign neoformations. The modifications in the oral microcirculation were evaluated in vivo in correspondence to the surgical site through videocapillaroscopy at three different times: 30 min before the biopsy; 48 h after the biopsy; and 7 days after the biopsy. The statistical significance was checked with the Mann–Whitney U-test (P < 0.05). The analysis of videocapillaroscopic patterns showed statistically significant variations relative to the…

The morbidity of oral mucosal lesions in an adult swedish population

2013

Objectives: To study the severity of symptoms and estimate the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in a non-referral adult Swedish population, as registered by general dental practitioners. This study also aims to evaluate the possibi-lity of dental practitioners collecting large quantities of reliable and accurate clinical data on oral mucosal lesions. Study Design: Data from 6,448 adult Swedish patients were collected by general dental practitioners using a standardized registration method. A correlation analysis between a group with oral mucosal lesions and a control group, with no oral mucosal lesions, was performed for various parameters such as symptoms from the oral mucosa, systemic d…

Burning mouth syndrome : correlation of treatment to clinical variables of the disease

2010

Objective: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a complex disorder with a still uncertain etiopathogenesis. A number of treatments have been used in application to BMS, though without clearly successful results. The present study compares the improvement in BMS obtained as a result of different treatment modalities in relation to the clinical characteristics of the patients. Study Design: A retrospective cohort study was made of 115 patients with BMS (109 females and 6 males) subjected to different treatments with a view to improving the symptoms. The clinical variables examined included the duration of the disorder, the location of the burning sensation, its daily variations and relationship wi…

A novel mobile application to determine mandibular and tongue laterality discrimination in women with chronic temporomandibular disorder.

2020

Background Chronic pain from temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is caused by a somatosensory disturbance due to sustained activation of central nervous system nociceptive pathways, which can induce changes in neuroplasticity in the thalamus, basal ganglia and limbic system, as well as disturbances in the somatosensory, prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex and cognitive impairment. The main objective of this study was to determine the discrimination capacity of mandibular and tongue laterality between women with chronic TMDs and asymptomatic women. Material and Methods This descriptive-comparative study examined 2 groups with a total of 30 women. All participants were between the ages of 23 a…
