Gimt: A tool for ontology and goal modeling in BDI multi-agent design

2014

Designing and developing BDI multi-agent systems would be facilitated by rising up the level of abstraction to use and by a methodological approach for managing it. To this aim it is common the integration of goal oriented analysis techniques with the design and implementation phases. In this fashion, our experience is that the use of an ontology in the early stages of the process is a great support for subsequent phases: goal modeling, agent design and implementation. However, we are aware that building and maintaining an ontology has to be supported by appropriate tools. This paper proposes GIMT (Goal Identification and Modeling Tool) as a further step towards the creation of a complete m…

Architecture in the digital age. Evolution of language and contemporary design.

2012

The ‘computer revolution’ is the most obvious phenomenon of our time. The new capabilities introduced by the digital drafting have triggered a substantial evolution of the relationship between representation and design. The diffusion of digital technologies in Architecture has opened new frontiers in the design field, stimulating the development of a new expressive language that promotes generating complex shapes. On the other hand, the shape often becomes the main interest of the designers. Then, is the project only a formal question? Are the glamour images become the main target to which the ‘New Architecture’ aims?

New imaging techniques and opportunities in endoscopy.

2011

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is undergoing major improvements, which are driven by new available technologies and substantial refinements of optical features. In this Review, we summarize available and evolving imaging technologies that could influence the clinical algorithm of endoscopic diagnosis. Detection, characterization and confirmation are essential steps required for proper endoscopic diagnosis. Optical and nonoptical methods can help to improve each step; these improvements are likely to increase the detection rate of neoplasias and reduce unnecessary endoscopic treatments. Furthermore, functional and molecular imaging are emerging as new diagnostic tools that could provide an oppor…

Methods to investigate coronary microvascular function in clinical practice.

2012

A growing amount of data is increasingly showing the relevance of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMVD) in several clinical contexts. This article reviews techniques and clinical investigations of the main noninvasive and invasive methods proposed to study coronary microcirculation and to identify CMVD in the presence of normal coronary arteries, also trying to provide indications for their application in clinical practice.

Are tools all we need? Digital Humanities in the time of its institutionalisation

2011

Three key features of the Digital Humanities today are its quantitative growth, its institutionalisation and its definition as a discipline. In the first part of this article (2. Institutional models) I shall pinpoint some models of institutionalisation that are emerging in the international scenario. Against this background, I shall then discuss (3. Tools) some concepts central to Digital Humanities’ self-definition, such as those of practice, ‘building’, centre, project, product and tools, particularly questioning the opinion that the creation of friendly digital tools is the key issue in the future of the field. I shall finally suggest that ‘instrumentalism’, ‘project fever’ and an exces…

Universal Design of Information Sharing Tools for Disaster Risk Reduction

2019

International audience; Disaster information sharing tools are an important aspect of disaster resilience, and it is of utmost importance that these tools are accessible and usable for as many potential users as possible. In this paper, we evaluate the accessibility of a selection of tools for crowdsourcing disaster situation information. As our evaluation shows that the selected tools are not fully accessible, we provide recommendations for mitigation, as well as highlight the importance of further research in this area.

Sequencing, De Novo Assembly and Annotation of the Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Transcriptome

2012

Background. The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) is a major pest and a serious threat to potato cultivation throughout the northern hemisphere. Despite its high importance for invasion biology, phenology and pest management, little is known about L. decemlineata from a genomic perspective. We subjected European L. decemlineata adult and larval transcriptome samples to 454-FLX massively-parallel DNA sequencing to characterize a basal set of genes from this species. We created a combined assembly of the adult and larval datasets including the publicly available midgut larval Roche 454 reads and provided basic annotation. We were particularly interested in diapause-specific g…

Communicative Language Skills Improvement Programme. (CELSIP) Vol.4

2020

[-] The digital revolution of the recent years has led to new ways of learning through combining innovative and traditional methods. In order to engage our students in this new methods, we have designed a project called “Communicative English Language Skills Improvement Program” (CELSIP) so our learners will be able to achieve a higher communicative level in English through a wide range of multimedia resources as, for instance, audio-books, learning apps, educational websites, TV series, films, board games, and music. These multimodal tools are of easy access to students since the vast majority are friendly-user. Our duty through this project was to select the most useful ones for all kind …

Using corpus tools to analyse learner language in a UK EAP context

2014

This study analyses the language of successful spoken requests used by Chinese intermediate level English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students in Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) at a UK higher education institution. Using corpus tools, the authors examined the frequent words, chunks and moves in request data and compared this to general reference corpora. Findings suggest that successful spoken requests often made use of high frequency modals and chunks. The data also demonstrated that the use of appropriate request moves were often associated with success, even if the language used contained linguistic errors. The findings have important implications for how spoken requests are taught in…
