The increasing application of sophisticated electrophysiological, radiological and surgical methods to the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal disorders requires a profound knowledge of the size and proportions of the human larynx and it's cartilaginous components. Only inadequate data regarding this subject have so far been accessible. The larynges of 53 patients (28 male and 25 female, age 25-88 years, in the means 59 years) were removed during routine autopsy 12-48 h post mortem and immediately submitted to morphometric investigation. The hippocampus, amygdala complex, and entorhinal region represent anatomically linked limbic structures of the mesiotemporal lobe. Chronic seizures and mnestic deficits in patients with pharmacoresistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) appear to correlate with distinct patterns of histopathological alterations in these areas. Molecular chaperones, many of which are heat shock proteins, play a role in cell stress response and regulate the immune system in various ways, such as in inflammatory/autoimmune reactions. It would be interesting to study the involvement of these molecules in the damage done to COVID-19-infected lungs. In our study, we performed a histological analysis and an immunomorphological evaluation on lung samples from subjects who succumbed to COVID-19 and subjects who died from other causes. Blue-yellow deficiency in workers exposed to low concentrations of organic solvents

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of low concentrations of organic solvents on color vision. Methods: Color vision was examined in 24 workers exposed to mixtures of solvents and in 24 control subjects. Exposure to mixtures was below the threshold-limit values. Color vision ability was assessed using the Ishihara plates (to screen for congenital dyschromatopsia), the Farnsworth panel D-15 test, the Lanthony desaturated panel D-15 test, and the Standard Pseudoisochromatic Plates part 2 (SPP2 test). Traumatic lesion of the extracranial vertebral artery--a note-worthy potentially lethal injury.

The autopsy findings from routine neuropathological investigations of the cervical spine after any history of trauma emphasized the vulnerability of the extracranial vertebral arteries. In 21 cases with trauma to the head and neck, normal autopsy procedures did not succeed in revealing an obvious cause of death. Traumatic lesions of the spinal cord such as contusion or neurorrhexis were seen in 10 cases. In 15 cases we observed different degrees and stages of traumatic lesions of the extracranial vertebral arteries. Aortic dissection detected by transoesophageal echocardiography

The diagnostic value of transoesophageal echocardiography was evaluated in 24 patients with aortic dissection and compared to transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography, computer tomography, aortography, surgery and autopsy. Using transoesophageal echocardiography we found in 5 patients a type I dissection, in 5 patients a type II and in 14 patients a type III dissection. Transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography was positive in 3/5 type I, 2/5 in type II and 2/14 in type III dissections. Post-traumatic lethal carotid-cavernous fistula.

The authors report about an unexpected death by traumatic lesion of the internal carotid artery in a 30-year-old man who had fallen two metres. The man suffered a fracture of the left maxillary sinus and a fracture of the right orbit with bilateral haemorrhage of the maxillary sinus. Surgical treatment was performed with favorable outcome. Clinically, there were no neurological symptoms but about 60 days after his accident, the man died from uncontrolled epistaxis. He was submitted to the autopsy that show a linear fracture in the left side of the turcic sella and lesion of the left internal carotid artery with carotid-cavernous fistula.

Lipopigments with fingerprint profiles in eccrine sweat gland epithelial cells are regular findings in childhood NCL. They have also been described in adult NCL (ANCL) a few times, but not consistently. However, they have been considered nonspecific when not matched by similar abnormal profiles in noneccrine sweat gland epithelial cells. These conflicting reports may pose a diagnostic dilemma as outlined in the following 2 examples. Patient 1 is a 20-year-old man who developed severe tetraparesis and dementia over 2 years. Electroencephalogram was abnormal with epileptiform discharges. The patient died at age 21 years without autopsy ; no other relatives are known to have a similar disease.…
