Conditions of commodification : Russian as a transient commodity in an Arctic tourism resort

2022

Abstract Based on an ethnography incorporating interview, linguistic landscape and observational data, this research illustrates how temporary linguistic value is negotiated and how an Arctic tourism destination is made fit for consumption for a specific audience. Set within a tourism resort in the Finnish Arctic during two weeks in Winter when the region habitually receives a large influx of Russian-speaking visitors, we illustrate how Russian is conceptualized as a means of economic practice by stakeholders in the local tourism industry. While some offer services specifically for a Russian-speaking audience as part of a short-term high-risk/high-reward investment, others regard Russian as…

2019

[EN] This study of tourism in Llíria/Liriais based on surveys, which gathered statistical data on the visits made to city and the reasons for visiting it, in order to determine the tourist potential of the municipality. The study made it possible to extract relevant information to formulate tourist interests around three attractive cultural elements: the typical interests of historical character, gastronomy through food festivals, and music in the form of local band competitions. This last attractionof the "City of Music"could constitute the key to developing a different local offering, Llíria 2.0. The Internet inclusive of networks and social media have brought a new era for promoting and …

Discussing Tourism as a Rite of Passage

2018

This chapter recapitulates the discussion originated by John Tribe respecting to the dispersion of produced knowledge in tourism. We critically give a new fresh paradigm in order for readers to understand what tourism is. This chapter centers on themes I am not accustomed to discuss but are very important to the epistemological advance of the discipline, precisely in a moment where the epistemology of tourism enters in a serious crisis. Though I here am synthesizing my experience as author, reviewer and editor, no less true is that it situates as a complementary platform to expand the current understanding of tourism and its intersection in culture.

Italy's Island Systems: Competitiveness in the Mediterranean Context

2021

From ancient times, the Mediterranean basin has connected peoples from different countries, facilitating both commercial and cultural exchanges. Within the Mediterranean basin, both large and small islands have always been transit and temporary stopping places, thereby promoting trade and acting as sorting centers for goods and knowledge. Today, these territories, which differ in size, population and economic and cultural activities, are the core of new exchanges and activities, among which tourism stands out. The Mediterranean basin has more than 100 islands belonging to six states that are members of the European Union (EU). However, despite the diversity and uniqueness of each island, th…
