Biopartitioning micellar chromatography to predict ecotoxicity

Abstract The knowledge of chemical toxicity is necessary for risk assessment and ranking of chemicals according their hazard potential. The use of biopartitioning micellar chromatography has proven to be valid in predicting several biological activities of different kinds of compounds. In this paper, the relationships between retention of 66 organic pollutants and several ecotoxicity parameters are studied. Adequate correlations retention-ecotoxicity (LC 50 in fish and daphnia, EC 50 in green algae and daphnia, values of chronic toxicity in fish and green algae and bioconcentration factor in fish) of organic pollutants are obtained. Embryotoxic potential of persistent organic pollutants extracted from tissues of guillemots (Uria aalge) from the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean

The Baltic Sea is a heavily polluted area. To assess the current contaminant pressure on the common guillemot (Uria aalge) living there, whole-body extracts of guillemots from the Baltic Sea were prepared and subdivided over six fractions, which differed in composition due to lipophilicity and polarity of the contaminants. The fractions were tested in the chicken embryo assay and compared to fractions of Atlantic guillemot extracts. Fertilized chicken eggs were injected with 0.03, 0.3, or 3 bird egg equivalents (BEQ) of the contaminants present in the fractions and then incubated for 19 d. Removal of toxic pollutants from pulp mill effluents by electrocoagulation

This study investigated the effect of electrocoagulation treatment on toxic pollutant removal from pulp mill effluents. Synthetic wastewaters containing wood rosin and copper or pure resin acids were used to investigate the removal of resin acids and copper by electrocoagulation. Removal of pollutants by electrocoagulation was also tested with real debarking effluent. In this study, statistical experimental design and partial least squares modeling were used to investigate the effect of initial pH, current (current density) and treatment time. Effect of deicing salts on urban soils and health status of roadside trees in the Opole region.

This article reports on a study whose aim was to evaluate the impact of snow removal salts on urban soil properties and the health of roadside trees. The evaluation was done by chemical analyses of soil samples and plant matter combined with toxicity testing, performed with a Protoxkit F, a protozoan microbiotest. Samples were collected at 45 locations on three main roads in the town of Opole (Poland). The roads differed in the snow removal technology and amount of chemical substances (mostly NaCI) used on them during the winter. Soil plate bioassay: an effective method to determine ecotoxicological risks.

Heavy metals have become one of the most serious anthropogenic stressors for plants and other living organisms. Having efficient and feasible bioassays available to assess the ecotoxicological risks deriving from soil pollution is necessary. Assessment of toxicity hazards of dredged lake sediment contaminated by creosote.

In order to predict the potential toxicity hazards of sediment remediation by dredging, an experimental laboratory simulation was made by investigating seven ratios of creosote-contaminated sediment (Lake Jamsanvesi, central Finland) and artificial lake water mixtures. Sediment was suspended in water at the ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32, 1:64, 1:128 v/v. The elutriates were analysed for the acute toxicity by photoluminescence bacterial and waterflea (Daphnia magna Straus) tests.
