Screening for Solute Transporters in Plant Photosynthetic Membranes

As compared to chloroplast envelope transporters, the field of thylakoid transporters is largely unexplored. There is evidence for several transport activities in the plant thylakoid membrane, but only a copper P-type ATPase and an ATP/ADP carrier have been so far identified at the gene level in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using in silico analyses, we have predicted the existence of approximately 15 thylakoid transporters, including phosphate transporters and cation channels. Influence of negative allosteric cooperativity in cation transport.

Abstract The bis-macrocyclic ether5 seems to have a negative allosteric cooperativity and is able to transport double the amount of Na+ and K+ cations as monocyclic systems. This compound could be used as a simple model of the plasma membrane Na+−K+ ATPase which actively pumps Na+ out and K+ into the cell, respectively.

σ-Hammett parameter: a strategy to enhance both photo- and electro-luminescence features of heteroleptic copper(i) complexes

This work studies the effect of the σ-Hammett parameter (σp) – i.e., the σ-donation effect caused by substitution at the para position of a bipyridine ligand (4,4′-R2bipy, where R is MeO, Me, H, NO2) – on both the photo- and electro-luminescence features of a series of heteroleptic copper(I) complexes – i.e., [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+ where N^N and P^P ligands are R2bipy and Xantphos, respectively. Differences in gender and performance in off-road triathlon.

The aims of this study were: (1) to examine performance trends and compare elite male and female athletes at the off-road triathlon (1.5-km swim, 30-km mountain biking, and 11-km trail running) world championships since its inception in 1996, and (2) to compare gender-related differences between off-road triathlon and conventional road-based triathlon. Linear regression analyses and ANOVA were used to examine performance trends and differences between the sexes. Hemodynamic Parameters Change Earlier Than Tissue Oxygen Tension in Hemorrhage

BACKGROUND: Untreated hypovolemia results in impaired outcome. This study tests our hypothesis whether general hemodynamic parameters detect acute blood loss earlier than monitoring parameters of regional tissue beds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight pigs (23-25 kg) were anesthetized and mechanically ventilated. A pulmonary artery catheter and an arterial catheter were inserted. Tissue oxygen tension was measured with Clark-type electrodes in the jejunal and colonic wall, in the liver, and subcutaneously. GW170817: Implications for the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background from Compact Binary Coalescences

The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. Wireless body area networks have recently received much attention because of their application to assisted living and remote patient monitoring. For these applications, energy minimisation is a critical issue since, in many cases, batteries cannot be easily replaced or recharged. Brookite, the Least Known TiO2 Photocatalyst

Brookite is the least studied TiO2 photocatalyst due to the difficulties usually encountered in order to obtain it as a pure phase. In this review, a comprehensive survey of the different methods available for preparing brookite powders and films is reported. Attention has been paid both to the most traditional methods, such as hydrothermal processes at high temperatures and pressures, and to environmentally benign syntheses using water soluble compounds and water as the solvent. Papers reporting the photocatalytic activity of pure and brookite-based samples have been reviewed.
