Ultrastructure of Human Spinal Trabecular Arachnoid

2014

The arachnoid trabecular layer, located internally to the arachnoid layer, is composed of fibers that form the spider web–like trabecular structure found in the subarachnoid space and in the adventitial layer of blood vessels. The arachnoid trabeculae give shape to tubular structures (arachnoid sheaths) for each nerve root and for the spinal cord. Some of these arachnoid trabeculae extend to the pia mater. The trabecular arachnoid is an extremely fragile structure, which can easily be damaged. Because of its fragility, this membrane may be destroyed during dissection and manipulation, so that it is not frequently seen or systematically described. Trabecular arachnoid limits nerve root movem…

Delayed brain reexpansion in schizophrenic patient affected by trabecular type chronic subdural hematoma

2021

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) represents a complex and unpredictable disease, characterized by high morbidity and mortality, especially in elderly patients. Factors affecting the postoperative brain reexpansion along to cSDH recurrence have not been yet adequately investigated. The authors presented the case of a schizophrenic patient affected by trabecular type cSDH that presented a delayed brain reexpansion despite a craniotomy and membranotomy. Case Description: A 51-year-old female patient with diagnosis of schizophrenia was admitted to the emergency department with GCS score of 5/15 and right anisocoria. An urgent brain CT revealed a trabecular right cSDH (35 mm in maxi…

Proteome alterations in aqueous humour of primary open angle glaucoma patients.

2019

Aim To unravel the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) related proteomic changes in aqueous humour (AH). Methods Totally 35 patients listed for cataract surgery (controls: n=12, age: 67.4±13.6y) or trabeculectomy for POAG (n=23, age: 72.5±8.3y) were included. AH samples of those patients were obtained during cataract surgery or trabeculectomy. AH samples were subsequently pooled into the experimental groups under equal contribution in terms of protein amount of each individual patient. Protein samples were analyzed by a linear trap quadrupol Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry device with an upstream liquid chromatography system. The obtained raw data were analyzed using the Maxquant proteome softwar…

Impact of estrogens on atherosclerosis and bone in the apolipoprotein E-deficient mouse model.

2014

Objective The common inflammatory pathophysiology has nourished the hypothesis of a relationship between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Estrogens are key agents in the modulation of both processes. We investigated whether induction of atherosclerosis affects bone and whether estrogens modulate both processes. Methods Female apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (a well-established model of atherogenesis) were ovariectomized or falsely operated and fed either standard diet or high-fat diet (HFD). Six animals were included in each of the four groups. To clarify mechanisms, we treated preosteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells with mouse serum. Results Physiological levels of estrogens in falsely oper…

Proceso migratorio, condiciones laborales y salud en trabajadores inmigrantes en España (proyecto ITSAL)

2009

Entrevista a 2434 trabajadores (57,4% varones).

Participatory Ergonomics: A Model for the Prevention of Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorders

2009

Purpose To compare two surgical approaches for treating encapsulated blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, in terms of the development of intraocular pressure and progression of glaucoma in a long-term follow up: 1. bleb needling alone vs. 2. a combined approach of needling with additional transconjunctival scleral flap sutures, to prevent early ocular hypotony. Methods Forty-six patients with failing blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C were enrolled in this study. Patients received either needling revision alone (group 1; n = 23) or a combined needling with additional transconjuctival flap sutures, if intraoperatively the intraocular pressure was estimated to be low (group 2…

Commonly occurring genetic polymorphisms with a major impact on the risk of nonsyndromic strabismus: replication in a sample from Finland

2022

PURPOSE To replicate associations between polymorphisms in the WRB and TSPAN10 genes and strabismus in an independent Finnish cohort and to calculate their population attributable risk. METHODS Polymorphisms in the WRB (rs2244352) and TSPAN10 (rs6420484) genes were investigated in individuals from the FinnGen study group who had one of three categories of strabismus, with clinical diagnoses of (1) "strabismus-all subtypes" (3,515 cases and 173,384 controls), (2) "convergent concomitant strabismus" (ICD-10 code H50.0; 737 cases and 170,976 controls), and (3) "divergent concomitant strabismus" (ICD-10 code H50.1; 1,059 cases and 170,976 controls). RESULTS The WRB polymorphism was associated w…

A 2013 European survey of clinical practice patterns in the management of Graves' disease

2014

SummaryObjective Management of Graves' disease (GD) in Europe was published in 1987. Aim of this survey was to provide an update on clinical practice in Europe, and to compare it with a 2011 American survey. Design Members of the European Thyroid Association (ETA) were asked to participate in a survey on management of GD, using the same questionnaire of a recent American survey. Results A total of 147 ETA members participated. In addition to serum TSH and free T4 assays, most respondents would request TSH-receptor autoantibody (TRAb) measurement (85·6%) and thyroid ultrasound (70·6%) to confirm aetiology, while isotopic studies were selected by 37·7%. Antithyroid drug (ATD) therapy was the …

Imaging features of histological subtypes of hepatocellular carcinoma: Implication for LI-RADS

2021

Background & Aims The histopathological subtypes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are associated with distinct clinical features and prognoses. This study aims to report Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS)-defined imaging features of different HCC subtypes in a cohort of resected tumours and to assess the influence of HCC subtypes on computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) LI-RADS categorisation in the subgroup of high-risk patients. Methods This retrospective institutional review board-approved study included patients with resected HCCs and available histopathological classification. Three radiologists independently reviewed preoperative CT and MRI exams. T…
