Biodegradable collagen matrix implant vs mitomycin-C as an adjuvant in trabeculectomy: a 24-month, randomized clinical trial

2011

AIM: To verify the safety and efficacy of Ologen (OLO) implant as adjuvant compared with low-dosage mitomycin-C (MMC) in trabeculectomy. METHODS: This was a prospective randomized clinical trial with a 24-month follow-up. Forty glaucoma patients (40 eyes) were assigned to trabeculectomy with MMC or OLO. Primary outcome includes target IOP at ≤21, ≤17, and ≤15 mm Hg; complete (target IOP without medications), and qualified success (target IOP regardless of medications). Secondary outcomes include bleb evaluation, according to Moorfields Bleb Grading System (MBGS); spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) examination; number of glaucoma medications; and frequency of postoperative…

Comparison of three ultrasonic axial transmission methods for bone assessment.

2005

Abstract This study compared three approaches to bone assessment using ultrasonic axial transmission. In 41 fresh human radii, velocity of the first arriving signal was measured with a commercial device (Sunlight Omnisense ™ ) operating at 1.25 MHz, a prototype based on 1-MHz bidirectional axial transmission and a low-frequency (200 kHz) prototype, also measuring the velocity of a slower wave. Cortical and trabecular bone mineral density, cortical thickness and cross-sectional area were determined by peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Significant but modest correlation between velocities reflects differences in the nature of the propagating waves and methodological differences. Of…

Ventricular dysfunction and number of non compacted segments in non compaction: Non-independent predictors.

2010

Abstract Background Isolated ventricular noncompaction (IVNC) is characterized by multiple prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. Some reports prove that the chronic heart failure may occur in approximately half of the patients. In this report we investigate the correlation between the number of non compacted segments and entity of systolic dysfunction from the registry and subregistries of the SIEC. Method To identify the correlation between ventricular dysfunction and number of segments involved in non compaction we evaluated a consecutive series of 238 patients affected by non compaction, from the SIEC (Societa Italiana di Ecografia Cardiovascolare) registry. The ave…

Improved Bone Biomechanical Properties in Rats after Oral Xylitol Administration

1999

The effects of 5, 10, and 20% dietary xylitol supplementations on the biomechanical properties, histological architecture, and the contents of collagen, pyridinoline, and deoxypyridinoline in long bones of rats were studied. Tibiae were used for the three-point bending test, and femurs were used for the torsion and loading test of the femoral neck. The 10 and 20% oral xylitol administrations caused a significant increase of tibial stress, femoral shear stress, and stress of the femoral neck as compared with the controls. Parallel, but not significant, effects were also seen in the 5% xylitol supplementation group. No significant differences in strain or Young's modulus of the tibiae were de…

Deep sclerectomy versus punch trabeculectomy with or without phacoemulsification: a randomized clinical trial.

2004

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of non-penetrating deep sclerectomy without implant with Crozafon-De Laage punch trabeculectomy, and to evaluate the effect of simultaneous temporal approach phacoemulsification on both techniques. Patients and Methods: Setting: Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Palermo. Design: Prospective randomized clinical trial. Patients and intervention procedures: Sixty-five patients (65 eyes) with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG): 32 eyes underwent non-penetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS), 17 as single procedure and 15 combined with phacoemulsification (phaco- NPDS), and 33 eyes underwent punch trabeculectomy (PT),…

Deep sclerectomy versus punch trabeculectomy: effect of low-dosage mitomycin C.

2004

Purpose: To compare IOP behavior after deep sclerectomy (DS) and trabeculectomy with the Crozafon-De Laage Punch (TP), using low-dosage intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) in both techniques. Methods: The study was a prospective randomized clinical trial. All patients met inclusion and exclusion criteria, and were scheduled for glaucoma surgery. Forty patients were randomized to undergo either a nonpenetrating DS with MMC (DSMMC) (19 eyes) or a TP with MMC (TPMMC) (21 eyes). Postoperative examinations were performed at the 1st day, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks and the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months. Postoperative complications, number of antiglaucoma med…

Is there a relationship between the degree of preoperative motility impairment or the muscle thickness and the outcome of strabismus surgery in patie…

2005

There is considerable controversy regarding the performance of strabismus surgery in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO). The spectrum of recommendations extends from variable dose-effect correlations for these procedures (Esser, 1994; Mourits et al., 1990; Nguyen et al., 2002) to individualized approaches such as passive intraoperative motility testing and postoperative adjustment of sutures (Lueder et al., 1992; Nguyen et al., 2002), and to local anesthesia for intraoperative assessment of active motility (Kalpadakis et al., 2004). Furthermore, prior decompression surgery is known to contribute to an unpredictable outcome (Eckstein and Esser, 2003; Esser, 1994). We retrospectively anal…

Fine Structural Evaluation of the Iris After Unilateral Treatment With Latanoprost in Patients Undergoing Bilateral Trabeculectomy (The Mainz II Stud…

2003

Objective To investigate by masked electron microscopy whether 6 months of topical latanoprost caused pathological changes in the peripheral iris of patients with glaucoma. Methods Seventeen patients with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma requiring trabeculectomy were recruited for this study. The iridectomy taken during surgery on the first eye served as a control. The second test eye was treated topically with latanoprost for 6 months before its trabeculectomy. Fourteen patients completed the treatment arm of the study, and 1 of these underwent marked color change. As a result, 31 iridectomy specimens were fixed, coded, and evaluated. Results The specimens were evaluated for evidence …

Ocular ductions after rectus muscle recession and resection in thyroid eye disease.

2019

Background: Recession and resection of rectus muscles for correction of strabismus in Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is relatively unpopular as it is assumed to enhance the restriction of ocular ductions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare ductions of recession only and recess/resect procedures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 119 patients who underwent strabismus surgery for TED from 1991 to 2015, of which 102 were included in the present study. Forty-six interventions were performed on horizontal, 56 on vertical rectus muscles; comprising 41 recess/resect surgeries for horizontal deviations, and 7 in patients with vertical strabismus. Ocular ductions and ali…

Lack of Correlation between Liver Tests Abnormalities and Trabectedin Efficacy in the Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcoma: A Retrospective Study

2015

AbstractElevation in liver transaminases is common in patients treated with the marine antitumor agent trabectedin. However, the impact of trabectedin-related transaminase elevations on treatment outcomes is unclear. This retrospective study investigated the correlation between liver tests abnormalities and treatment outcomes in patients with unresectable advanced or metastatic soft tissue sarcomas (STS) treated with trabectedin 1.5 mg/m2 once every 3 weeks at three reference centers in Italy. The effect of grade 3/4 elevations in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or aspartate aminotransferase (AST) during the first two cycles and at any time during trabectedin treatment on progression-free su…
