Positron emission tomography and neoadjuvant therapy of breast cancer

2011

The increasing use of neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer has led to the development of early surrogate markers of response. Positron emission tomography (PET) allows noninvasive study of fundamental biologic processes in the tumor; furthermore, PET provides various markers to assess tumor response early in the course of therapy. Numerous studies have shown that changes in tumor glucose metabolism during therapy are significantly correlated with final response and patient outcome. Moreover, new PET tracers that are currently being developed or under evaluation, providing specific information on tumor characteristics or receptor expression, will assist the development of new targeted antic…

Sorption of copper by a highly mineralized peat in batch and packed-bed systems

2009

BACKGROUND: The performance of peat for copper sorption was investigated in batch and fixed-bed experiments. The effect of pH was evaluated in batch experiments and the experimental data were fitted to an equilibrium model including pH dependence. Hydrodynamic axial dispersion was estimated by tracing experiments using LiCl as a tracer. Six fixed-bed experiments were carried out at copper concentrations between 1 and 60 mg dm−3 and the adsorption isotherm in dynamic mode was obtained. A mass transport model including convection–dispersion and sorption processes was applied for breakthrough curve modelling. RESULTS: Maximum uptake capacities in batch mode were 22.0, 36.4, and 43.7 mg g−1 for…

Neurological complications in pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: a systematic review of the literature

2021

Abstract Objectives To describe clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, radiological data and outcome of pediatric cases with SARS-CoV-2 infection complicated by neurological involvement. Study design A computerized search was conducted using PubMed. An article was considered eligible if it reported data on pediatric patient(s) with neurological involvement related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We also described a case of an acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) in a 5-year-old girl with SARS-CoV-2 infection: this case was also included in the systematic review. Results Forty-four articles reporting 59 cases of neurological manifestations in pediatric patients were included in our revi…

Abstract. Dynamical and microphysical processes in pyroconvective clouds in mid-latitude conditions are investigated using idealized three-dimensional simulations with the Active Tracer High resolution Atmospheric Model (ATHAM). A state-of-the-art two-moment microphysical scheme building upon a realistic parameterization of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activation has been implemented in order to study the influence of aerosol concentration on cloud development. The results show that aerosol concentration influences the formation of precipitation. For low aerosol concentrations (NCN = 200 cm−3), rain droplets are rapidly formed by autoconversion of cloud droplets. This also triggers the f…

A device to measure the effects of strong magnetic fields on the image resolution of PET scanners

2009

Abstract Very high resolution images can be achieved in small animal PET systems utilizing solid state silicon pad detectors. As these systems approach sub-millimeter resolutions, the range of the positron is becoming the dominant contribution to image blur. The size of the positron range effect depends on the initial positron energy and hence the radioactive tracer used. For higher energy positron emitters, such as Ga 68 and Tc 94 m , which are gaining importance in small animal studies, the width of the annihilation point distribution dominates the spatial resolution. This positron range effect can be reduced by embedding the field of view of the PET scanner in a strong magnetic field. In…

Development and characterization of a Drop-on-Demand inkjet printing system for nuclear target fabrication

2017

Abstract A novel target preparation method based on Drop-on-Demand (DoD) inkjet printing has been developed. Conventional preparation methods like the electrochemical method “Molecular Plating” or the “Polymer-Assisted Deposition Method” are often limited, e.g., concerning the dimensions and geometries of depositions or by the requirement for electrically conducting substrates. Here, we report on the development of a new technique, which overcomes such limits by using a commercially available DoD dispenser. A variety of solutions with volumes down to 5 nL can be dispensed onto every manageable substrate. The dispensed volumes were determined with a radioactive tracer and the deposits of eva…

Composition of Primary Cosmic-Ray Nuclei at High Energies

2008

The TRACER instrument (``Transition Radiation Array for Cosmic Energetic Radiation'') has been developed for direct measurements of the heavier primary cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies. The instrument had a successful long-duration balloon flight in Antarctica in 2003. The detector system and measurement process are described, details of the data analysis are discussed, and the individual energy spectra of the elements O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe (nuclear charge Z=8 to 26) are presented. The large geometric factor of TRACER and the use of a transition radiation detector make it possible to determine the spectra up to energies in excess of 10$^{14}$ eV per particle. A power-law fit to…

A dynamical mean field theory for the study of surface diffusion constants

1997

We present a combined analytical and numerical approach based on the Mori projection operator formalism and Monte Carlo simulations to study surface diffusion within the lattice-gas model. In the present theory, the average jump rate and the susceptibility factor appearing are evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations, while the memory functions are approximated by the known results for a Langmuir gas model. This leads to a dynamical mean field theory (DMF) for collective diffusion, while approximate correlation effects beyond DMF are included for tracer diffusion. We apply our formalism to three very different strongly interacting systems and compare the results of the new approach with th…

Dynamical mean field theory: an efficient method to study surface diffusion coefficients

1998

Abstract We test the accuracy of the dynamical mean field theory (DMF) developed recently for the collective and tracer diffusion coefficients D C and D T , respectively, by Monte Carlo simulations of two very strongly interacting model systems. The deviation of the DMF results from the true hydrodynamic diffusion coefficients is a measure of memory effects, which are not fully accounted for in DMF. In the cases studied here, DMF predicts the behavior of both D C and D T accurately, while the memory effects are found to be most pronounced at low temperatures, and at high coverages and stronger interactions. Nevertheless, the computational cost of DMF is just a fraction of what is needed for…
