How Quickly Can We Predict Users’ Ratings on Aesthetic Evaluations of Websites? Employing Machine Learning on Eye-Tracking Data

2020

This study examines how quickly we can predict users’ ratings on visual aesthetics in terms of simplicity, diversity, colorfulness, craftsmanship. To predict users’ ratings, first we capture gaze behavior while looking at high, neutral, and low visually appealing websites, followed by a survey regarding user perceptions on visual aesthetics towards the same websites. We conduct an experiment with 23 experienced users in online shopping, capture gaze behavior and through employing machine learning we examine how fast we can accurately predict their ratings. The findings show that after 25 s we can predict ratings with an error rate ranging from 9% to 11% depending on which facet of visual ae…

On Gauss and Gaussian Legends: A Quiz

2018

For the last few years, students in my history of mathematics course have been required to do a bit of research on the web. Each of them chooses from a list of specially chosen questions designed to make them ponder whether the information they find on standard internet sites is solidly grounded and clearly sourced, or whether subsequent research (pursued in such unlikely places as the local university library) might lead a person to doubt what one reads online. The idea here is not to push for a definitive answer; in many cases, this would be a hopeless undertaking anyway. Instead, I ask students merely to report on what they found and how they went about tracking down the information cite…

Real-time data processing in the ALICE High Level Trigger at the LHC

2019

At the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, atomic nuclei are collided at ultra-relativistic energies. Many final-state particles are produced in each collision and their properties are measured by the ALICE detector. The detector signals induced by the produced particles are digitized leading to data rates that are in excess of 48 GB/$s$. The ALICE High Level Trigger (HLT) system pioneered the use of FPGA- and GPU-based algorithms to reconstruct charged-particle trajectories and reduce the data size in real time. The results of the reconstruction of the collision events, available online, are used for high level data quality and detector-performance monitoring and real-tim…

CSR communication through social media: a neurophysiological and self-reported perspective

2022

In-beam test results of the Super-FRS GEM-TPC detector prototype with relativistic uranium ion beam

2023

As an essential part of the Super-FRS particle identification, the GEM-TPC detector in a twin field-cage configuration will provide position information at up to 1 MHz counting rate with a spatial resolution 95 %. This detector is designed to provide particle-beam tracking information of projectiles ranging from protons to uranium. The performance of the GEM-TPC detector in a single field-cage configuration and newly integrated AWAGS readout electronics with a differential output was studied at the FRS for the response to the uranium beam at 850 MeV/u with intensity up to 1000 ions/spill. The result shows that a clusterization algorithm developed for this analysis works properly. The spatia…
