How Bad is Globalization for Labour Standards in the North?

We analyse a world consisting of "the North" and "the South" where labour standards in the North are set by trade unions. Standards set by unions tend to increase output and welfare. There are no unions in the South and work standards are suboptimal. Trade between these two countries can imply a reduction in work standards in the North. Moreover, when trade unions are established in the South, the North, including northern unions, tend to lose. Quantitatively, these effects are small and overcompensated by gains in the South. The existing empirical literature tends to support our findings.

[EN] Mangiferin, a natural compound isolated from Mangifera indica L, was incorporated in glycerosomes, ethosomes and alternatively in glycerol-ethanol phospholipid vesicles (glycethosomes). Actually, only glycethosomes were able to stably incorporate the mangiferin that was loaded at increasing concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8 mg/mL). The morphology, size distribution, rheological properties, surface charge and entrapment efficiency of prepared vesicles were deeply measured. High-performance liquid chromatographic study of the regulation of phospholipid metabolism in cultured adrenocortical cells

Abstract A rapid high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the separation of phospholipids was developed for minute samples of total lipids (ca. 200 μg). The method was applied to the study of the phospholipid metabolism in adrenocortical cell cultures. A complete separation of the different cellular phospholipid classes was achieved in 40 min. Good resolution of the phospholipid peaks was obtained, which allowed the collection of each individual class of phospholipids for further analysis of radioactivity and fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-11 and cililary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) belong to the same family of hematopoietic and neurotrophic cytokines. Their receptor complexes contain a cytokine-binding alpha receptor and the common glycoprotein (gp)130 subunit for signal transduction. The extracellular parts of the alpha-receptor subunits consist of a membrane-proximal cytokine-binding domain and an N-terminal immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain with unknown function. Estimating the Effect of Common Currencies on Trade: Blooming or Withering Roses?

Abstract Using a gravity model and data on 182 countries worldwide, this paper estimates the effects of exchange rate volatility and currency unions on international trade for ten years spanning 1980 through 2010. We provide added confirmation and further strengthen the empirical findings in Rose (2000) prior to 1999, but we find a gradually diminishing Rose effect for the 2000-2010 period, when the Euro Zone is added to the currency union dummy. The rest of the coefficients generally comply in magnitude and sign with what is standard in the “gravity” literature.
