Rapid change in forms of inorganic nitrogen in soil and moderate weed invasion following translocation of wet meadows to reclaimed post‐industrial la…
2019
Anthropogenic expansion and loss of natural environments calls for the more sustainable use of resources, including land. To combine the conservation of highly valuable meadow habitat with reclamation of post‐industrial land, 1.3 ha of turf were translocated from an urban area to basins constructed near an abandoned quarry. In contrast to the usual method of choosing similar habitats as salvage sites, the selected quarry possessed different environmental properties to the meadows, challenging their acclimatisation. To evaluate the project, we monitored three meadows (Molinion caeruleae alliance) for three seasons: immediately before the transfer and for 2 years afterwards. We recorded veget…
Targeting the mevalonate pathway for improved anticancer therapy.
2009
The mevalonate pathway is important for the generation of isoprene moieties thereby providing the basis for the biosynthesis of molecules required for maintaining membrane integrity, steroid production and cell respiration. Additionally, isoprene precursors are indispensable for the prenylation of regulatory proteins such as Ras and Ras-homologous (Rho) GTPases. These low molecular GTP-binding proteins play key roles in numerous signal transduction pathways stimulated upon activation of cell surface receptors by ligand binding. Thus, Ras/Rho proteins eventually regulate cell proliferation, tumor progression and cell death induced by anticancer therapeutics. Lipid modification of Ras/Rho pro…
Rho GTPases: Promising Cellular Targets for Novel Anticancer Drugs
2006
Ras-homologous (Rho) GTPases play a pivotal role in the regulation of numerous cellular functions associated with malignant transformation and metastasis. Rho GTPases are localized at membranes and become activated upon stimulation of cell surface receptors. In their GTP-bound (=active) state, Rho proteins bind to effector proteins, thereby triggering specific cellular responses. Members of the Rho family of small GTPases are key regulators of actin reorganization, cell motility, cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion as well as of cell cycle progression, gene expression and apoptosis. Each of these functions is of importance for the development and progression of cancer. Fu…
Inhibition of Protein Isoprenylation Impairs Rho-Regulated Early Cellular Response to Genotoxic Stress
2000
Activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) are early cellular responses to genotoxic stress involved in the regulation of gene expression. Pretreatment of cells with the hydroxymethyl glutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin blocked stimulation of JNK1 activity by UV irradiation and by treatment with the alkylating compound methyl methanesulfonate but did not affect activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 by UV light. Lovastatin also attenuated UV-induced degradation of the NF-kappaB inhibitor IkappaBalpha. The effects of lovastatin on UV-triggered stimulation of JNK1 as well as on IkappaBalpha degradation were reverted by cotreatmen…
Investigation of a Gravel-Bed River’s Pattern Changes: Insights from Satellite Images
2021
Changes in river pattern have been documented in the literature. The recognition of islands and vegetated patches, which is indicative of the evolution processes, requires simultaneous information at different points and at different times and field studies are still difficult and scarce. The present work, focusing the attention on a gravel-bed river, explores the possibility to conduct a first-step pattern changes analysis by identifying the evolution of the morphological features and taking information of islands and vegetated patches from satellite images easily available from Google Earth. The study is conducted by combining the information taken from both the satellite images and the f…
An Italian experience on crash modeling for roundabouts
2015
In the last few years a considerable amount of safety models and evaluation tasks have been developed and specifically dedicated to roundabouts. Several safety performance functions (SPFs), indeed, have been implemented for roundabouts worldwide. Since SPFs are developed using crashes, traffic volume and other characteristics of a specific site (or geographical area), their direct transferability to other contexts different from those in which SPFs were calibrated is not always possible and, in any case, it must be done very carefully. A safety performance function cannot be used without a transferability evaluation for sites not included in the geographic area for which it was developed. S…
Jaunas rīcībpolitikas izveide: bezpilota lidaparātu (dronu) izmantošanas gadījums
2018
Darbs sastāv no četrām daļām.
Frozen or dynamic? : An atomistic simulation perspective on the timescales of electrochemical reactions
2023
Electrochemical systems span a wide range of timescales, and several recent works have put forth the idea that the reaction environment should remain frozen and out of equilibrium during electrochemical electron or proton transfer reactions. Furthermore, simplified treatments of the electrochemical interface model the solvent and ions as frozen molecules. However, the claims and practices of a frozen environment strongly clash with most theoretical and simulation approaches developed to study electrochemical reaction rates. It has also been suggested that the electrode potential should not be fixed when simulating reaction rates due to conductivity limitations, which indicates constant pote…
