Structure evolution and reaction mechanism in the Ni/Al reactive multilayer nanofoils

2014

Abstract The extremely rapid gasless reactions in binary Ni/Al reactive multilayer nanofoils (RMNFs) are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The quenching technique is used to study the dynamics of structural transformation on the micro- and nanoscales. The experimentally obtained patterns of structural evolution related to the heterogeneous reactions are compared with the results of molecular dynamics simulations carried out for the same reactive system. Based on the obtained data, the intrinsic mechanism of the reaction in Ni/Al RMNF is considered, which adequately explains the unusual parameters of a gasless combustion wave in such a system.

Design, build-up and optimization of a fast quenching device for polymeric thin film

2014

In this work an innovative apparatus for the characterization of polymer solidification under very high cooling rates (up to thousand of K/s) is described, according to the continuous cooling transformation approach adopted in metallurgy for studying structure development in metals. The proposed model experiment is addressed to design a method for the characterization of non-isothermal solidification behaviour, encompassing typical cooling conditions of polymer processing. Only temperature history determines the structure formed, as melt solidification takes place in quiescent conditions. With respect to the device previously developed by the authors [1, 3] the present equipment presents th…

Co-Evolutionary Coupling via a Digital-bio Ecosystem : A Suggestion for a New R&D Model in the Digital Economy

2019

A solution to the critical problem of a dilemma between R&D expansion and productivity decline that a majority of information and communication technology (ICT) leaders have been confronting in the digital economy is expected. It can be expected by a spinoff from economic functionality-seeking GDP-based coevolution cycle to supra-functionality beyond an economic value-seeking uncaptured GDP-driven coevolution cycle. However, the transformation dynamism remains a black box. By means of numerical simulations based on empirical analyses of the development trajectories of global ICT leaders, focusing on Amazon and Finland, together with an intensive review of preceding analyses, this paper atte…

Caveolin-1, breast cancer and ionizing radiation

2015

Breast cancer (BC) recovery has increased in recent years thanks to efforts of Omics-based research in this field. However, despite the important results obtained, BC remains a complex multifactorial pathology that is difficult to treat appropriately. Caveolin-1 (CAV1), the basic constituent protein of specialized plasma membrane invaginations called caveolae, is emerging as a potential therapeutic biomarker in BC. This factor may modulate BC response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In addition, recent reports describe the key role of CAV1 during cell response to oxidative stress. The aim of the present review was to describe the biological roles of CAV1 in BC considering its contras…

Impact of rainfall data resolution in time and space on the urban flooding evaluation

2012

ABSTRACT Climate change and the modification of urban environment increase the frequency and the impact of flooding rising the interest of researchers and practitioners on this topic. Usually flooding frequency analysis in urban areas are indirectly carried out by adopting advanced hydraulic models to simulate long historical rainfall series or design storms. However their results are affected by a grade of uncertainty which has been much investigated in recent years. One of the most critical source of uncertainty inherent to hydraulic model results is linked to the imperfect knowledge of the rainfall input data both in time and space. Several studies show that hydrological modelling in urb…

Chaotic Properties of Dilute Two and Three Dimensional Random Lorentz Gases II: Open Systems

2000

We calculate the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for a point particle moving in a random array of fixed hard disk or hard sphere scatterers, i.e. the disordered Lorentz gas, in a generic nonequilibrium situation. In a large system which is finite in at least some directions, and with absorbing boundary conditions, the moving particle escapes the system with probability one. However, there is a set of zero Lebesgue measure of initial phase points for the moving particle, such that escape never occurs. Typically, this set of points forms a fractal repeller, and the Lyapunov spectrum is calculated here for trajectories on this repeller. For this calculation, we need the solution of the recently…

Design of Numerical Simulations of Linear Friction Welding Processes: Issues and Difficulties

2015

In this paper, a critical analysis of the technical difficulties and numerical issues in running simulations of linear friction welding processes is carried out. The focus of the paper is the comparison of different modeling strategies of a numerical analysis for the LFW process of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, for which the thermal aspect strongly influences the mechanical behavior due to the phase transformation, taking place over a definite range of temperature. A 3D simulation campaign, conducted using the FEA code DEFORMTM, was considered in order to show advantages and disadvantages of each approach, including the most critic limitations and complexity in a correct simulation design using…

Long-Term Stability of (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnxThermoelectric p-Type Half-Heusler Compounds Upon Thermal Cycling

2015

The effect of thermal cycling upon the thermoelectric performance of state-of-the-art p-type half-Heusler materials was investigated and correlated with the impact on the structural properties. We simulated a heat treatment of the material similar to actual applications in the mid-temperature range, such as occurs during the energy conversion from an automotive exhaust pipe. We compared three different compositions based on the (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnx system. The best and most reliable performance was achieved using Ti0.5Hf0.5CoSb0.85Sn0.15, which reached a maximum figure of merit ZT of 1.1 at 700 °C. The intrinsic phase separation and resulting microstructuring, which are responsible for the …

Entrectinib: a potent new TRK, ROS1, and ALK inhibitor

2015

Abstract: Introduction: Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and their signaling pathways, control normal cellular processes; however, their deregulation play important roles in malignant transformation. In advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the recognition of oncogenic activation of specific RTKs, has led to the development of molecularly targeted agents that only benefit roughly 20% of patients. Entrectinib is a pan-TRK, ROS1 and ALK inhibitor that has shown potent anti-neoplastic activity and tolerability in various neoplastic conditions, particularly NSCLC. Areas covered: This review outlines the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, safety, tolerability, pre-cl…
