Dominant contribution of P450 3A4 to the hepatic carcinogenic activation of aflatoxin B1.

2006

The hepatic carcinogen aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is metabolized in the liver by at least four different P450s, all of which exhibit large interindividual differences in the expression levels. These differences could affect the individual risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We investigated the metabolism of AFB1 in a panel of 13 human liver microsomal preparations using a hepatic abundance model, which takes into account the specific kinetic parameters and the expression levels of these P450s. We found a 12-fold variability in the production rate of the carcinogenic metabolite AFB1-8,9-epoxide (AFBO) and a 22-fold variability in the production of the detoxification product AFQ1. The ratio betw…

Frequency and determinants for hemorrhagic transformation of posterior cerebral stroke

2017

Abstract Background hemorrhagic transformation is a threatening ischemic stroke complication. Frequency of hemorrhagic transformation differs greatly among studies, and its risk factors have been usually studied in patients with anterior ischemic stroke who received thrombolytic therapy. We evaluated, in a hospital-based series of patients with posterior ischemic stroke not treated with thrombolysis, frequency and risk factors of hemorrhagic transformation. Patients with posterior circulation stroke were seen in our Department during the period January 2004 to December 2009. Demographic and clinical information were collected. We estimated risk for spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation by …

Search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons at LEP

2006

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of "benchmark" models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. Thes…

Additivity of affine designs

2020

We show that any affine block design $$\mathcal{D}=(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{B})$$ is a subset of a suitable commutative group $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D},$$ with the property that a k-subset of $$\mathcal{P}$$ is a block of $$\mathcal{D}$$ if and only if its k elements sum up to zero. As a consequence, the group of automorphisms of any affine design $$\mathcal{D}$$ is the group of automorphisms of $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D}$$ that leave $$\mathcal P$$ invariant. Whenever k is a prime p,  $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D}$$ is an elementary abelian p-group.

Quasi-Projective Varieties

2000

We have developed the theory of affine and projective varieties separately. We now introduce the concept of a quasi-projective variety, a term that encompasses both cases. More than just a convenience, the notion of a quasi-projective variety will eventually allow us to think of an algebraic variety as an intrinsically defined geometric object, free from any particular embedding in affine or projective space.

Birkhoff-Frink representations as functors

2010

In an earlier article we characterized, from the viewpoint of set theory, those closure operators for which the classical result of Birkhoff and Frink, stating the equivalence between algebraic closure spaces, subalgebra lattices and algebraic lattices, holds in a many-sorted setting. In the present article we investigate, from the standpoint of category theory, the form these equivalences take when the adequate morphisms of the several different species of structures implicated in them are also taken into account. Specifically, our main aim is to provide a functorial rendering of the Birkhoff-Frink representation theorems for both single-sorted algebras and many-sorted algebras, by definin…

Ein Axiomensystem fr partielle affine Rume

1994

A partial linear space with parallelism is called partial affine space if it is embeddable in an affine space with the same pointset preserving the parallelism. These partial affine spaces will be characterized by a system of three axioms for partial linear spaces with parallelism.

Statistical Mechanics of the sine-Gorden Field: Part II

1985

From the work of the Part I we are now in a position to address ourselves to the main problem posed in these lectures — the evaluation of Z, (1.11), for the s-G field after canonical transformation to the action-angle variables (4.27).
