Oral cancer on the gingiva in patients with proliferative leukoplakia: A study of 30 cases

2019

Background Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, recently coined as proliferative leukoplakia (PL), is associated with a strong tendency to recur after treatment and an elevated rate of malignant transformation. We compared the clinical characteristics of patients with gingival PL with and without progression to oral squamous cell carcinoma. Methods The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 included 33 patients with gingival PL that did not progress to cancer, and group 2 included 30 patients with PL who developed malignant transformation during follow-up. We compared age, sex, tobacco habit, clinical characteristics of gingival PL lesions, and location, tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) …

Odorant Metabolism Analysis by an Automated Ex Vivo Headspace Gas-Chromatography Method

2015

International audience; In the olfactory epithelium (OE), odorant metabolizing enzymes have the dual function of volatile component detoxification and active clearance of odorants from the perireceptor environment to respectively maintain the integrity of the tissues and the sensitivity of the detection. Although emphasized by recent studies, this enzymatic mechanism is poorly documented in mammals. Thus, olfactory metabolism has been characterized mainly in vitro and for a limited number of odorants. The automated ex vivo headspace gas-chromatography method that was developed here was validated to account for odorant olfactory metabolism. This method easily permits the measurement of the f…

Wip1 phosphatase: between p53 and MAPK kinases pathways.

2016

IF 5.008; International audience; Cells undergoing oncogenic transformation frequently inactivate tumor suppressor pathways that could prevent their uncontrolled growth. Among those pathways p53 and p38MAPK pathways play a critical role in regulation of cell cycle, senescence and cell death in response to activation of oncogenes, stress and DNA damage. Consequently, these two pathways are important in determining the sensitivity of tumor cells to anti-cancer treatment. Wild type p53-induced phosphatase, Wip1, is involved in governance of both pathways. Recently, strategies directed to manipulation with Wip1 activity proposed to advance current day anticancer treatment and novel chemical com…

Hybrid State Feedback Position-Force Control of Hydraulic Cylinder

2019

A hybrid position-force control is proposed using a unified state feedback controller in combination with feedforward dead-zone compensation. Dead-zone compensator was constructed as inverse of the identified static map while the state feedback gains were obtained using a numerical optimization routine. An accurate state-space model affine in states and control, derived in a previous work, was used for closed-loop simulations and control tuning. A trigger event for automatic switching between position and force control was defined and integrated into overall control architecture alongside with a feedforward low-pass filter reducing high frequency components in the control signal. Experiment…

Impact of the information provided to consumers on their willingness to pay for Champagne : comparison with hedonic scores

2002

Ecovillages in Spain: Searching an emancipatory social transformation?

2018

Today the second most important country after the United States, in the number of ecovillages, and by far, the most prominent in Europe, is Spain. The question to be addressed here is whether this revival or boom of ecovillages in Spain is an incipient social transformation and cultural change, following Erik Olin Wright theory of emancipatory social transformation. This work is divided into five main sections. The first one introduces three different approaches that remark the importance of ecovillages for radical cultural and social studies. The second part explains the methodology performed for the study of 29 ecovillages in Spain, using six critical variables on material interests and i…

An Easy Game? Experiences of ‘Homecoming’ in the Post-Socialist Context of Croatia and the Czech Republic

2016

The obstacles that often accompany remigration, planned and imagined as a ‘homecoming’, are seldom the topic of investigation in migration studies. Returning is not always an ‘easy game’. To explore this aspect of remigration, this chapter intends to focus on narratives of return produced mainly by so-called co-ethnic migrants who moved back to Croatia and the Czech Republic during the past two decades of post-socialist transformation. The empirical base of the chapter draws on the experiences and struggles accompanying remigration, and of arrival and acceptance in the respective society as described by returnees in biographical interviews. Attention is given to everyday social interaction …

‘Tool port’ to ‘landlord port’: a game theory approach to analyse gains from governance model transformation

2018

This study investigates potential port users’ surplus and terminal operators’ profits due to transforming port governance from the ‘tool port’ model to the ‘landlord port’ model. Although the landl...

Business Process Management in Financial and Non-Financial Institutions: Payment Process Modelling in Financial Flows Management

2017

Business process management is a progressively developing area of science, which is seen as the most modern and forward-looking innovative. Modern business operations remain highly dependent on IT solutions to steer the processes. Business process management solutions have been the clue for easing daily business operations. IT solutions have actively penetrated the working environment in all areas of business, especially the financial sector. It is beyond to imagine modern financial markets and institutions without IT software support. Not only billing, calculation and payment processes, even stock pricing, market analysis and risk monitor tools are fully computerized through business proce…
