Energy conversion from external fluctuating signals based on asymmetric nanopores

2015

Electrical transduction from fluctuating external signals is central to energy conversion based on nanoscale electrochemical devices and bioelectronics interfaces. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a significant energy transduction from white noise signals using the electrical rectification of asymmetric nanopores in polymeric membranes immersed in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Load capacitor voltages of the order of 1 V are obtained within times of the order of 1 min by means of nanofluidic diodes which convert zero time-average potentials of amplitudes of the order of 1 V into average net currents. Modulation of current-time traces by two-pore arrangements of polyimide nanofluidic diodes

Liquid state arrangements of two polymeric membranes with single conical nanopores constitute nanofluidic diodes that allow a rich electrical functionality based on the modulation of individual conductances in aqueous electrolyte solutions. In particular, the prescribed sequences of current-time traces can be obtained by preprogramed switching between series and parallel pore connection arrangements. Uptake from water, biotransformation, and biliary excretion of pharmaceuticals by rainbow trout.

An urgent need exists to assess the exposure of fish to pharmaceuticals. The aim of the present study was to assess the uptake and metabolism of waterborne pharmaceuticals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A further objective was to determine the possibility of monitoring exposure to low levels of pharmaceuticals by bile assays. Rainbow trout were exposed for 10 d under flow-through conditions to mixtures of five pharmaceuticals (diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, bisoprolol, and carbamazepine) at high and low concentrations. Concatenated trial based Hilbert-Huang transformation on event-related potentials

Time-frequency analysis is critical to study event-related potentials (ERPs) now. ERPs are usually generated through averaging over a number of trials, and such averaging limits the application of a nonlinear time-frequency analysis method—Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT). This is because HHT usually requires very long recordings to sufficiently decompose the complicated signal into oscillations and the averaged ERP trace tends to possess only hundreds of samples. Weak quadrupole moments

Collective effects in deformed atomic nuclei present possible avenues of study on the non-spherical distribution of neutrons and the violation of the local Lorentz invariance. We introduce the weak quadrupole moment of nuclei, related to the quadrupole distribution of the weak charge in the nucleus. The weak quadrupole moment produces tensor weak interaction between the nucleus and electrons and can be observed in atomic and molecular experiments measuring parity nonconservation. The dominating contribution to the weak quadrupole is given by the quadrupole moment of the neutron distribution, therefore, corresponding experiments should allow one to measure the neutron quadrupoles.
