Ecdysteroid-dependent larval-adult oviduct transformation in the milkweed bugOncopeltus fasciatus requires absence of juvenile hormone
1987
It has been tested whether juvenile hormone plays a role in the larval-adult transformation of lateral oviducts in the milkweed bug. The transformation is ecdysteroid-dependent, as was reported previously2. Application of precocene or juvenile hormone III proved that the absence of juvenile hormone is required.
Manipulation of glycolysis in malignant tumors: fantasy or therapy?
2009
After Warburg stated his hypothesis on tumor cell metabolism about 80 years ago, the field of carbohydrate metabolism of cancer cells and solid tumors is experiencing a boom for the past few years. Numerous studies have been focused on the characteristics of cancer metabolism and its accessibility to novel therapeutic interventions. Malignant transformation is associated with an increase in glycolytic flux, mainly caused by an upregulation of numerous glycolysis-related genes in the majority of human cancers. As a consequence of these alterations, tumor cells are producing lactate at higher levels compared to non-malignant tissue, even in the presence of oxygen, a phenomenon termed “aerobic…
Negative pressures in CaWO4 nanocrystals
2009
Tetragonal scheelite-type CaWO4 nanocrystals recently prepared by a hydrothermal method show an enhancement of its structural symmetry with the decrease in nanocrystal size. The analysis of the volume dependence of the structural parameters in CaWO4 nanocrystals with the help of ab initio total-energy calculations shows that the enhancement of the symmetry in the scheelite-type nanocrystals is a consequence of the negative pressure exerted on the nanocrystals; i.e., the nanocrystals are under tension. Besides, the behavior of the structural parameters in CaWO4 nanocrystals for sizes below 10 nm suggests an onset of a scheelite-to-zircon phase transformation in good agreement with the predic…

Crystal polymorphism of (μ4–O)-body centered adamantanoid Cu(II) complexes
2016
Abstract Two novel polymorphs of [Cu4(μ4–O)(μ–Cl)6(DASO)4], (DASO = diallyl sulfoxide; C6H10OS), rhombic (C) and triclinic (D), were obtained and examined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at two temperatures, 295(2) and 100(1) K. This study, in addition to our recent work on the tetragonal (A) and trigonal (B) forms of the title compound, allowed determining the nature of polymorphism and temperature-induced phase transitions. It is stated that both the packing arrangement and the displacive transformation integrate these structures, forming the symmetrically and thermodynamically related series: A,B → C → D. The C3h → C4 distortion of Cu(II) trigonal bipyramidal coordination ge…
Exploring the high-pressure behavior of the three known polymorphs of BiPO4: Discovery of a new polymorph
2015
We have studied the structural behavior of bismuth phosphate under compression. We performed x-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 31.5 GPa and ab initio calculations. Experiments were carried out on different polymorphs: trigonal (phase I) and monoclinic (phases II and III). Phases I and III, at low pressure (P < 0.2-0.8 GPa), transform into phase II, which has a monazite-type structure. At room temperature, this polymorph is stable up to 31.5 GPa. Calculations support these findings and predict the occurrence of an additional transition from the monoclinic monazite-type to a tetragonal scheelite-type structure (phase IV). This transition was experimentally found after the simultaneo…
THEORIZING THE CONCEPT OF TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
2019
The concept of learning experience holds its eminent place within the paradigm of constructivism in contemporary educational science. The study process is being designed and construed to foster educative experiences in accordance with the desired learning outcomes. Transformative learning theory and the concept of perspective transformation marks a specific type of learning experience – one that reconstructs the frame of reference of the learner. Such a paradigmatic shift is also considered necessary for large-scale educational reforms to succeed. Transformative learning theory itself doesn’t provide clear-cut solutions for implementation of a certain reform ideology, to the contrary – it q…
α- and β-AgVO3 polymorphs as photoluminescent materials: an example of temperature-driven synthesis
2018
Abstract Controlling the synthesis of a given polymorph of an inorganic material is a further step in the design of property and function. In this letter, we report for the first time a simple procedure to effectively control the reversible transformation between the crystalline polymorphs α-AgVO3 and β-AgVO3. Photoluminescence emission (PL) performance is analyzed; at low temperatures (up to 35 °C) when α-AgVO3 is formed the PL emission is red, while at temperatures larger than 45 °C when β-AgVO3 is obtained the color of emission PL emission goes from green to blue. The findings highlight the ability of temperature to dramatically alter the nature of phase transformation at the atomic leve…
Effects induced by UV laser radiation on the blue luminescence of silica nanoparticles
2013
The effects induced on the blue luminescence centered around 2.8 eV, characteristic of silica nanoparticles, were investigated by monitoring its intensity during and after exposure to the third and the fourth harmonic of a Nd:YAG pulsed laser. The luminescence trend is found to be dependent on the UV photon energy: 3.50 eV photons induce a partial bleaching followed by a recovery in the post-irradiation stage; 4.66 eV photons cause a total bleaching permanent after the irradiation. These results are interpreted as the conversion of luminescent defects towards stable and metastable configurations.
Syntax Error Handling
1990
In the previous chapters we have seen that the various parsers discussed, at least whenever they are deterministic, detect an error in any nonsentence. This means, that on any nonsentence there is a computation ending with an error configuration. For practical parsers, mere error detection is not enough; the parser should also emit a meaningful error message and recover from the error. A recovery means that the error configuration is transformed into a non-error configuration at which normal parsing can be resumed. Moreover, the transformation should be done so that as few input symbols as possible will be discarded. The goal of the error recovery is to maximize the amount of input text tha…
