Comparative study of the high-pressure behavior of ZnV2O6, Zn2V2O7, and Zn3V2O8

2020

We report a study of the high-pressure structural behavior of ZnV2O6, Zn2V2O2, and Zn3V2O8, which has been explored by means of synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. We found that ZnV2O6 and Zn3V2O8 remain in the ambient-pressure structure up to 15 GPa. In contrast, in the same pressure range, Zn2V2O2 undergoes three phase transitions at 0.7, 3.0, and 10.8 GPa, respectively. Possible crystal structures for the first and second high-pressure phases are proposed. Reasons for the distinctive behavior of Zn2V2O2 are discussed. The compressibility of the different polymorphs has been determined. The response to pressure is found to be anisotropic in all the considered compounds and the room-temp…

Spin crossover behavior in a series of iron(III) alkoxide complexes.

2015

The synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic behavior, and electron paramagnetic resonance studies of five new FeIII spin crossover (SCO) complexes are reported. The [FeIIIN5O] coordination core is constituted of the pentadentate ligand bztpen (N5) and a series of alkoxide anions (ethoxide, propoxide, n-butoxide, isobutoxide, and ethylene glycoxide). The methoxide derivative previously reported by us is also reinvestigated. The six complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic Pbca space group and show similar molecular structures and crystal packing. The coordination octahedron is strongly distorted in both the high- and low-temperature structures. The structural changes upon spin conversion ar…

Classical and Quantum Annealing in the Median of Three Satisfiability

2011

We determine the classical and quantum complexities of a specific ensemble of three-satisfiability problems with a unique satisfying assignment for up to N = 100 and 80 variables, respectively. In the classical limit, we employ generalized ensemble techniques and measure the time that a Markovian Monte Carlo process spends in searching classical ground states. In the quantum limit, we determine the maximum finite correlation length along a quantum adiabatic trajectory determined by the linear sweep of the adiabatic control parameter in the Hamiltonian composed of the problem Hamiltonian and the constant transverse field Hamiltonian. In the median of our ensemble, both complexities diverge e…

Pulse trains produced by phase-modulation of ultrashort optical pulses: tailoring and characterization

2009

1094-4087; In this paper, creation of pulse doublets and pulse trains by spectral phase modulation of ultrashort optical pulses is investigated. Pulse doublets with specific features are generated through step-like and triangular spectral phase modulation, whereas sequences of pulses with controllable delay and amplitude are produced via sinusoidal phase modulations. A temporal analysis of this type of tailored pulses is exposed and a complete characterization with the SPIDER technique (Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-field Reconstruction) is presented. A field induced ferromagnetic-like transition below 2.8 K in Li2CuO2: An experimental and theoretical study

1998

The low temperature magnetic properties of the Li2CuO2 compound have been investigated by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. We find in addition to an antiferromagnetic phase below 9.5 K a ferromagnetic-like steep rise of the magnetization around 2.8 K. The observed low temperature behavior is discussed by considering second and fourth order magnetocrystalline effective anisotropy coefficients, in addition to the exchange couplings reported in the literature. Work at the Institut de Ciencia dels Materials was supported by the Spanish Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Technología Grant No. CICYT MAT 96-1037.

Colloquium: The Shape of Hadrons

2012

This Colloquium addresses the issue of the shape of hadrons and, in particular, that of the proton. The concept of shape in the microcosm is critically examined. Special attention is devoted to properly define the meaning of shape for bound-state systems of near massless quarks. The ideas that lead to the expectation of nonsphericity in the shape of hadrons, the calculations that predict it, and the experimental information obtained from recent high-precision measurements are examined. Particular emphasis is given to the study of the electromagnetic transition between the nucleon and its first excited state, the Δ(1232) resonance. The experimental evidence is critically examined and compare…
