The main goal of this work was to assess the radiological hazard at Alte Madonie Mounts region (north-central Sicily, Italy) in response to rumours of an increase in the incidence of cancer in this area. A correlation between the natural radionuclide contents and the petrographic features of the soil and rock samples was also evaluated. A total of 41 samples of selected soils and rocks were collected, powdered, dried and sealed in 'Marinelli' beakers for 20 d prior to measurement to ensure that a radioactive equilibrium between (226)Ra and (214)Bi had been reached. VLBI detection of the HST-1 feature in the M87 jet at 2 cm

A bright feature 80 pc away from the core in the powerful jet of M87 shows highly unusual properties. Earlier radio, optical and X-ray observations have shown that this feature, labeled HST-1, is superluminal, and is possibly connected with the TeV flare detected by HESS in 2005. It has been claimed that this feature might have a blazar nature, due to these properties. To examine the possible blazar-like nature of HST-1, we analyzed lambda 2 cm VLBA archival data from dedicated full-track observations and the 2 cm survey/MOJAVE VLBI monitoring programs obtained between 2000 and 2009. Accumulation of these emissions may cause uncertain and irreversible adverse climate change impacts. High-resolution real-time sonography was performed in 15 cases of clinically and chemically suspected primary hyperparathyroidism and in 20 patients with different thyroid nodules. The suspected enlarged parathyroid glands and the thyroid nodules were percutaneously punctured under sonographic control. Concentrations of parathyroid hormone, human thyroglobulin, and human calcitonin were measured in the aspirate, and immunocytology was performed. Toxic adenoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with Graves' disease.

A case of a very rare association of toxic adenoma and papillary carcinoma with Graves’ disease is presented. A 34-year-old woman developed Graves’ disease with mild ophthalmopathy. An ultrasound revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with a hypoechoic pattern and a hypoechoic nodule with regular edges of 1.6 cm in diameter at the lower pole of the left lobe. A thyroid 131I scintiscan showed a diffuse and homogeneous 131I distribution. The 131I uptake (RAIU) was elevated.
