5-Azacytidine Inhibits the Activation of Senescence Program and Promotes Cytotoxic Autophagy during Trdmt1-Mediated Oxidative Stress Response in Insu…

2022

5-Azacytidine (5-azaC), a methyltransferase inhibitor and anticancer drug, can promote several cellular stress responses such as apoptosis, autophagy, and senescence. The action of 5-azaC is complex and can be modulated by dose, time of treatment, and co-administration with oxidants. Insulinoma is a rare pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with limited chemotherapeutic options. In the present study, two cellular models of insulinoma were considered, namely NIT-1 and β-TC-6 mouse cells, to evaluate the effects of 5-azaC post-treatment during hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress. 5-azaC attenuated the development of oxidant-induced senescent phenotype in both cell lines. No pro-apoptotic ac…

Mitochondria and T2D: Role of Autophagy, ER Stress, and Inflammasome.

2020

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the main current threats to human health. Both T2D and its numerous clinical complications are related to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Over the past decade, great progress has been made in extending our knowledge about the signaling events regulated by mitochondria. However, the links among mitochondrial impairment, oxidative stress, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and activation of the inflammasome still need to be clarified. In light of this deficit, we aim to provide a review of the existing literature concerning the complicated crosstalk between mitochondrial impairment, autophagy, ER stress, and the inflammasome in the mo…

Heavy Metals and Metalloids as Autophagy Inducing Agents: Focus on Cadmium and Arsenic

2012

In recent years, research on the autophagic process has greatly increased, invading the fields of biology and medicine. Several markers of the autophagic process have been discovered and various strategies have been reported studying this molecular process in different biological systems in both physiological and stress conditions. Furthermore, mechanisms of metalloid- or heavy metal-induced toxicity continue to be of interest given the ubiquitous nature and distribution of these contaminants in the environment where they often play the role of pollutants of numerous organisms. The aim of this review is a critical analysis and correlation of knowledge of autophagic mechanisms studied under …

The Role of Autophagy in Eye Diseases

2021

Autophagy is a catabolic process that ensures homeostasis in the cells of our organism. It plays a crucial role in protecting eye cells against oxidative damage and external stress factors. Ocular pathologies of high incidence, such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are of multifactorial origin and are associated with genetic, environmental factors, age, and oxidative stress, among others; the latter factor is one of the most influential in ocular diseases, directly affecting the processes of autophagy activity. Alteration of the normal functioning of autophagy processes can interrupt organelle turnover, leading to the accumulation of cellula…

Fizikālie darba vides riska faktori gaisa kuģu apkalpē nodarbinātajiem un to saistība ar psihoemocionālo slodzi

2017

„Fizikālie darba vides riska faktori gaisa kuģu apkalpē nodarbinātajiem un to saistība ar psihoemocionālo slodzi”. Darba autore: Anete Boitmane. Darba zinātniskā vadītāja: asoc. prof., Dr.med. Ženija Roja. Maģistra darbs izklāstīts uz 126 lpp., ietver 30 attēlus, 21 tabulu, 11 pielikumus, 58 informatīvos avotus. Pētījums sastāv no 4 daļām.

Theory and regulation of liquidity risk management in banking

2016

Liquidity risk is now more important than it used to be in the past. The financial crisis has emphasised the importance of liquidity risk to the functioning of banking and financial system. The paper presents a theoretical and regulatory investigation of two types of liquidity risk: funding liquidity risk and market liquidity risk. The paper analyses the different approaches to measure the impact of funding and market liquidity risk in the economics and management of banks. The paper provides also an analysis of the organisational implications of the asset and liability management perspective of liquidity risk. Liquidity risk does not need to be covered by equity but by an adequate volume o…

Facilitation of goal-setting and follow-up in an internet intervention for health and wellness

2010

Chronic work-related stress and insufficient recovery from workload can gradually lead to problems with mental and physical health. Resources in healthcare are limited especially for preventive treatment, but low-cost support can be provided by Internet-based behavior change interventions. This paper describes the design of an Internet intervention which supports working-age people in managing and preventing stress-related health and wellness problems. The intervention is designed for early prevention and aims to motivate individuals to take responsibility for their own well-being. It allows them to choose the approach to take to address personally significant issues, while guiding them thr…

Toward evidence-based severity assessment in rat models with repeated seizures: II. Chemical post-status epilepticus model.

2019

Objective: Considering the complexity of neuronal circuits and their epilepsy-associated alterations, epilepsy models cannot be completely replaced by in vitro experimental approaches. Decisions about ethical approval of in vivo studies require a thorough weighing of the animal's burden and the benefit regarding the expected gain in knowledge. Methods: Based on combined behavioral, biochemical, and physiological analyses, we assessed the impact on animal well-being and condition in different phases of the pilocarpine post–status epilepticus (SE) model in rats. Results: As a consequence of SE, increased levels of impairment were evident in the early postinsult phase and late chronic phase, w…
