The impact of remote work and mediated communication frequency on isolation and psychological distress

2022

A massive shift towards remote work practices has presented many organizations and employees with acute challenges associated with multi-locational work. This shift underscores the need to reconsider isolation as one of the focal challenges of organizations in an era of increasingly dispersed and mediated work practices. This study relies on a three-wave survey among Finnish workers to investigate how remote work practices and the use of information and communication technology (ICT) have impacted perceptions of isolation during the global health pandemic, and whether these relationships have an effect on psychological distress. The findings indicate that facilitating the use of ICTs may he…

Standards for the diagnosis and management of complex regional pain syndrome: Results of a European Pain Federation task force.

2019

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome is a painful and disabling post-traumatic primary pain disorder. Acute and chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are major clinical challenges. In Europe, progress is hampered by significant heterogeneity in clinical practice. We sought to establish standards for the diagnosis and management of CRPS. Methods: The European Pain Federation established a pan-European task force of experts in CRPS who followed a four-stage consensus challenge process to produce mandatory quality standards worded as grammatically imperative (must-do) statements. Results: We developed 17 standards in 8 areas of care. There are 2 standards in diagnosis, 1 in multi…

Protective Effects of a Discontinuous Treatment with Alpha-Lipoic Acid in Obesity-Related Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction, in Rats

2020

Obesity induces hemodynamic and humoral changes that are associated with functional and structural cardiac remodeling, which ultimately result in the development of heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). In recent years, pharmacological studies in patients with HFpEF were mostly unsatisfactory. In these conditions, alternative new therapeutic approaches are necessary. The aim of our study was (1) to assess the effects of obesity on heart function in an experimental model and (2) to evaluate the efficacy of an alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) antioxidant treatment. Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were either included in the control group (n = 6) or subjected to abdominal aorti…

Ischemia Cardiaca e Psicosomatica: ruolo di eventi stressanti e stili di vita

2009

Objective: the aim of our study was to evaluate the role of stressful events, lifestyles and various socio-environmental factors in the beginning of ischemic cardiac diseases, together with cardiovascular factors. Materials and methods: 64 patients with recent cardiac ischemia and 64 controls matched 1:1, according to their sex and age, have been evaluated. The study required the filling in of clinico-anamnestic reports and the evaluation of stressful events, using the Holmes Rahe scale. Results: in the 44% of the patients who had a heart ischemia, an emotional striking event occurred few day before, with a 28% incidence of work and family problems. The mean score of the Holmes Social Readj…

Does Bacillus thuringiensis Affect the Stress and Immune Responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Larvae, Females, and Males in the Same Way?

2022

Simple Summary Rhynchophorus ferrugineus is a destructive quarantine pest of palm trees, now widely distributed. Although broad-spectrum insecticides are often used to protect palm against R. ferrugineus, there is increasing concern about their effects on the environment and human health, especially where palm trees are located in urban areas. As an environmentally friendly entomopathogen, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been widely used to prevent other pest infestations. Although Bt products are the most sold bio-insecticides, there are still many interesting features to be investigated in the relationship of Bt and its hosts. We investigated the effect of Bt on larvae, females, and males…

One More, One More... You Get Stuck" : The Role of Craving in Smartphone-Related Technostress

2022

Smartphones have been integrated into nearly every aspect of human life. Because of them, being entertained, communicating with others, and finding information has never been easier. Even though such possibilities are positive on the surface, the versatile nature of smartphones has also created issues, such as people using them compulsively or excessively. By collecting and analyzing data from 30 semistructured interviews, we explored how users may experience craving unstoppable/uncontrollable desire to use, despite the negative consequences) that make them use smartphones compulsively or excessively. Such use may eventually lead to technostress, which is stress caused by technology use. We…

The Ferroxidase Hephaestin in Lung Cancer: Pathological Significance and Prognostic Value

2021

AbstractIron is a fundamental nutrient utilized by living cells to support several key cellular processes. Despite its paramount role to sustain cell survival, excess of labile iron availability can inflict severe cell damage via reactive oxygen species generation which, in turn, can promote neoplastic transformation. The lung is particularly sensitive to iron-induced oxidative stress, given the high oxygen tensions herein present. Moreover, cigarette smoke as well as air pollution particulate can function as vehicles of iron supply, leading to an iron dysregulation condition shown to be crucial in the pathogenesis of several respiratory diseases including lung cancer. Hephaestin (HEPH) bel…
