Distribution, ecology and conservation survey on Trifolium michelianum Savi (Fabaceae) in Sicily (Italy)

2013

We report the identification of four residual stations for Trifolium michelianum Savi (Fabaceae) in Sicily, whereas the species was documented to be extinct at the Gorgo Cerro station (western Sicily), the only locality previously reported in the literature. In addition to an update on the distribution of the species, a survey on the new Sicilian populations led to their biological, ecological and phytosociological characterization, as well as to an assessment of the risk factors. The species, here relegated to the limit of its distribution area, occurs in particularly sensitive and vulnerable environments, such as the “Mediterranean temporary ponds”, considered “priority” by the Council Di…

Soil erosion assessment on tillage and alternative soil managements in a Sicilian vineyard

2011

Mediterranean crops favour high erosion rates. Vineyards use to reach the highest soil and water losses due to the lack of vegetation cover. A topographical approach by means of the use of vineyards poles as fixed reference point as erosion markers allowed to quantify high and non-sustainable soil erosion rates on the Sicilian vineyards during 9 years. In order to develop strategies to control the soil losses, seven land management were selected and applied in a typical blanc wine grape vineyard located in southwestern Sicily. Comparable plots were managed traditionally using conventional tillage and alternatively using various cover crops: 1) Vicia faba; 2) Vicia faba and Vicia sativa; 3) …

Taxonomical remarks on Trifolium savianum Guss. and its relationship with T. uniflorum L.

1996

In the frame of investigations on endemic or rare taxa of the Sicilian flora, Trifolium savianum Guss., a misappreciated species occurring in a small area of Peloritani mountains (NE Sicily) is examined. According to literature data, the species has been considered as a synonym of T. uniflorum L. (Lojacono, 1891; Zohary, 1969; Jafri, 1980; Zohary & Heller, 1984; Greuter, 1989), as a variety (Gibelli & Belli, 1892; Vierhapper, 1919; Fiori, 1925) or as a subspecies of the aforesaid species (Nyman, 1878; Coombe, 1968; Tutin et al., 1968; Pignatti, 1982). The analysis of morphological features, carried out on herbarium and living matherial, has highlighted that T. savianum can be considered as …

Taxonomical and phytogeographycal remarks on Trifolium savianum Guss., a misappreciated species of the Italian flora.

2000

The taxonomic position, chorology and phytosociological role of Trifolium savianum, a misappreciated species of the Italian flora, are examined. The species is closely related to T. uniflorum, E.-Mediterranean element, from which it differs in several morphological features regarding leaves, flowers and fruits. Distinction of the two taxa at the specific level is also supported by their geographical isolation dating back to the end of the Messinian period. From the phytosociological point of view, T. savianum is a member of an orophilous grassland rich in chamaephytes belonging to Plantaginion cupani, alliance of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea. This community is proposed as a new association, name…

Dirhodium(II) compounds with bridging thienylphosphines: studies on reversible P,C/P,S coordination.

2009

Monocyclometalated compound [Rh(2){(C(8)H(4)S)P(C(8)H(5)S)(2)}(CH(3)CO(2)H)(2)(O(2)CCH(3))(3)] (1 a) and bis-cyclometalated compound [Rh(2){(C(8)H(4)S)P(C(8)H(5)S)(2)}(2)(CH(3)CO(2)H)(2)(O(2)CCH(3))(2)] (2 a) have been isolated from the reaction of dirhodium tetraacetate and tris(2-benzo[b]thienyl)phosphine (2 BTP) using low acidic solutions. By contrast, in pure acetic acid the reaction of Rh(2)(O(2)CCH(3))(4) with 2 BTP and tris(2-thienyl)phosphine (2 TP), followed by replacement of the axial acetate ligands by chlorides, led to [Rh(2){(2-C(8)H(5)S)P(2-C(8)H(5)S)(2)}(2)Cl(2)(O(2)CCH(3))(2)] (3 b) and [Rh(2){(2-C(4)H(3)S)P(C(4)H(3)S)(2)}(2)Cl(2)(O(2)CCH(3))(2)] (5 b), respectively. These n…

From COVID-19 to future electrification: Assessing traffic impacts on air quality by a machine-learning model

2021

The large fluctuations in traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic provide an unparalleled opportunity to assess vehicle emission control efficacy. Here we develop a random-forest regression model, based on the large volume of real-time observational data during COVID-19, to predict surface-level NO(2), O(3), and fine particle concentration in the Los Angeles megacity. Our model exhibits high fidelity in reproducing pollutant concentrations in the Los Angeles Basin and identifies major factors controlling each species. During the strictest lockdown period, traffic reduction led to decreases in NO(2) and particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 μm by –30.1% and –17.5%, respectively, bu…
