The influence of solid retention time on IFAS-MBR systems: analysis of system behavior.

A University of Cape Town Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge Membrane Bioreactor (UCT-IFAS-MBR) pilot plant was operated at different values of the sludge retention time (SRT). Three SRTs were investigated at different durations: indefinitely, 30 and 15 days. The organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, kinetic/stoichiometric parameters, membrane fouling tendency and sludge filtration properties were assessed. The findings showed that by decreasing the SRT, the pilot plant could maintain excellent carbon removal efficiencies throughout the experiments. Comparative quantum chemistry study of the F-center in lanthanum trifluoride

Abstract In this study we report the results of first principle quantum chemical modeling of electronic structure and spatial configuration of LaF3 crystal containing the F-center. Theoretical predictions of atomic and electronic properties of LaF3 are given by means of density functional theory. From our modeling we predict that the F-center placed at fluorine ion position between the lanthanum planes at tysonite LaF3 is the most energetically stable. Rapid Radiochemical Separation Procedures from Aqueous Solutions

The state-of-the-art in the field of rapid radiochemical separation procedures is illustrated by two systems using aqueous solutions as input: ARCA, an apparatus for repetitive separations, and SISAK, a centrifuge system for continuous separations. Applications presented are: Solvent extraction of element 105 investigated with 34-s 262105 using ARCA, and decay scheme studies of the fission product 1.0-s 110Tc by means of SISAK.

Tandem gold self-relay catalysis for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydropyridin-4(1 H)-ones: combination of σ and π Lewis acid properties of gold salts.

The dual ability of gold salts to act as π- and σ Lewis acids has been exploited in a tandem self-relay catalysis. Thus, triphenylphosphanegold(I) triflate mediated the intramolecular carbonyl addition of the amide functionality of homoprogargyl amides to a triple bond. The formation of a σ complex of the gold salt with the intermediate oxazine promoted a nucleophilic addition followed by a Petasis-Ferrier rearrangement. This tandem protocol, catalyzed by the same gold salt under the same reaction conditions, gave rise to the efficient synthesis of 2,3-dihydropyridin-4-(1 H)-ones, which contain a cyclic quaternary α-amino acid unit. Modeling the decay of nitrite oxidizing bacteria under different reduction potential conditions

[EN] Autotrophic growth and decay rates of ammonium and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (AOB and NOB, respectively) have a significant impact on the design and on the process performance of wastewater treatment systems where nitrification occurs. Literature data on the separate decay rates of AOB and NOB is scarce and inconsistent. The neuronal form of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) synthesizes the messenger molecule nitric oxide (NO). In addition to NO formation, nNOS exhibits a so-called NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity. This study focused on the characterization of NADPH-d activity with regard to NO formation in the rat olfactory bulb. In this area of the brain pronounced staining is localized in discrete populations of neuronal somata and in olfactory glomeruli. Diaphorase staining combined with demonstration of nNOS by polyclonal antibodies revealed that NADPH-d activity of neuron somata is associated with nNOS immunoreactivity. Rotor—frame contact in a centrifuge installed on board a ship

The criticality of rotor and stator contact in a large-size marine separator is studied by numerical modelling. Two plausible mechanisms leading to such contact, namely rolling of a ship in steady-state motion and a suddenly occurring unbalance in the rotor, are considered. It is found that contact due to sea motion may be tolerable, while sudden development of unbalance at operating speed can lead to unacceptably high contact forces. This agrees with experience of centrifugal separators operating on board of ships.
