Association of metabolic syndrome and its components with hyperuricemia in a Mediterranean population.

Several studies have found an association between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome (MS), although there are discrepancies as to which MS components play a pivotal role in this association. We aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and MS in a Mediterranean population (eastern Spain). We performed a case-control study of 71 patients with MS and 122 healthy controls. Oxidative stress and maternal obesity: Feto-placental unit interaction

Abstract Objective To determine oxidative stress markers in maternal obesity during pregnancy and to evaluate feto-placental unit interaction, especially predictors of fetal metabolic alterations. Patients and methods 40 obese pregnant women (prepregnancy BMI > 30 kg/m²) were compared to 50 control pregnant women. Maternal, cord blood and placenta samples were collected at delivery. BACKGROUND: We aim to study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), hypertension and diabetes, and their relationship to cardiovascular disease in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia. METHODS: This is an observational cross-sectional study, uncontrolled and multicentre study. Selected subjects were patients with hypertriglyceridemia (triglycerides, TG, ≥ 200 mg/dl) visited in the Lipid Units of the Spanish Arteriosclerosis Society who met the inclusion criteria. Clinical experience of lomitapide therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.

The microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) inhibitor lomitapide is a licenced adjunct to a low-fat diet and other lipid-lowering medication, with or without low-density lipoprotein apheresis, for the treatment of adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH). In a recently published phase 3 study, patients with HoFH received lomitapide in addition to maximally tolerated lipid-lowering therapy. Treatment with lomitapide resulted in a mean approximate 50% reduction in LDL-C levels after 26 weeks compared with baseline levels (p < 0.0001).
