A Molecular Metal Ferromagnet from the Organic Donor Bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene and Bimetallic Oxalate Complexes

A new dual-function hybrid molecular material has been obtained from the organic donor bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene and the honeycomb oxalate-based bimetallic network [MnCr(ox)3]-. This multilayer material consists of layers of the inorganic anionic 2D network, responsible for the appearance of ferromagnetic ordering below 5.3 K, alternating with segregated layers of the organic cation radical responsible for the transport properties:  metal-like conductivity is observed from room temperature down to 150 K.

Solvent-Dependent Self-Assembly of an Oxalato-Based Three-Dimensional Magnet Exhibiting a Novel Architecture.

The old but evergreen family of bimetallic oxalates still offers innovative and interesting results. When (Me4N)3[Cr(ox)3]·3H2O is reacted with Mn(II) ions in a nonaqueous solvent, a novel three-dimensional magnet of the formula [N(CH3)4]6[Mn3Cr4(ox)12]·6CH3OH is obtained instead of the one-dimensional compound obtained in water. This new material exhibits an unprecedented stoichiometry with a binodal (3,4) net topology and the highest critical temperature (TC = 7 K) observed so far in a manganese-chromium oxalate based magnet.

Liquid-vapour phase behaviour of a symmetrical binary fluid mixture

Using Monte-Carlo simulation and mean field calculations, we study the liquid-vapour phase diagram of a square well binary fluid mixture as a function of a parameter $\delta$ measuring the relative strength of interactions between particles of dissimilar and similar species. The results reveal a rich variety of liquid-vapour coexistence behaviour as $\delta$ is tuned. Specifically, we uncover critical end point behaviour, a triple point involving a vapour and two liquids of different density, and tricritical behaviour. For a certain range of $\delta$, the mean field calculations also predict a `hidden' (metastable) liquid-vapour binodal.

Currently, significant efforts are devoted to designing small molecules able to bind selectively to guanine quadruplexes (G4s). These noncanonical DNA structures are implicated in various important biological processes and have been identified as potential targets for drug development. Previously, a series of triphenylamine (TPA)-based compounds, including macrocyclic polyamines, that displayed high affinity towards G4 DNA were reported. Tributyltin affects phagocytic activity of Ciona intestinalis hemocytes

Organotin compounds have been used in marine anti-fouling paints as biocides. Because tunicates are vulnerable to these compounds in their natural habitats, we used Ciona intestinalis to establish an assay for phagocytosis in vitro of yeast by hemocytes after exposure to different concentrations (0.0015, 0.015, 0.15 and 1.5 microM) of four organotin compounds: tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPT), dibutyltin (DBT) and diphenyltin (DPT). To evaluate the phagocytic activity, we used a method based on fluorescence excitation of yeast pre-treated with eosin-Y. The electronic mechanisms of a model hydride transfer reaction are theoretically studied with ab inito RHF and UHF SCF MO procedures at the 4‐31G basis set level and analytical gradient methods. The model system describes the reduction of cyclopropenyl cation to cyclopropene by the oxidation of lithium hydride to lithium cation. The molecular fragments corresponding to the asymptotic reactive channels characterizing the stepwise mechanisms currently discussed in the literature have been characterized. In this paper, we describe the preparation of liver-targeted nanoparticles potentially able to carry to hepatocytes a ribavirin (RBV) prodrug, exploiting the presence of carbohydrate receptors in the liver (i.e., ASGPR in hepatocytes). These particles were obtained starting from a galactosylated phospholipid-polyaminoacid conjugate. This study aims at evaluating the impact of different processes-pulsed electric fields (PEF), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and a multistep process combining PEF + PLE on the yield of antioxidant compounds (protein, polyphenols, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids) from Spirulina. Firstly, the effects of PEF or PLE treatment on the extraction yield of Spirulina biomolecules were evaluated. To further increase the extraction yield, PEF + PLE was used, as an innovative extraction approach. This article briefly describes the use of a photon counting system (ARGUS-100) in the detection of low levels of light. The ARGUS-100 was used in determining ATP in cell sections from tumor tissues and in measuring a luminescence-enhanced immunoluminometric assay, using ferritin as the analyte, based on the luminol-peroxide-4-iodophenol reaction with peroxidase as the enzyme. The aim is not so much the presentation of data, but rather to show the potentials of the photon counting camera in increasing our knowledge of the cellular and subcellular levels, as well as lowering the detection limits in already sensitive systems, such as immunoassays.
