Who Is the Social Entrepreneur?

2021

Social entrepreneurs are understood as individuals integrated within a society, being continually influenced by the environment. This chapter explains that the constitution of a social entrepreneur is determined by external variables (environmental influences) and internal variables (characteristics of the individual). Among the external influences, we should highlight the Triple Bottom Line phenomenon, the Corporate Social Responsibility trend, technological advances and the Sustainable Development Goals. The intrinsic motivators would be divided into three different dimensions: attitude and intention, personality traits and leadership skills. The synergies produced as a consequence of the…

An Overview on European Union Sustainable Competitiveness

2014

Abstract The last few years have emphasized a continuing concern of many institutions, nations, companies for sustainable development. The recent literature brings into attention the concept of sustainable competitiveness beyond sustainable development. The main idea of sustainable competitiveness is reflected by the searching of a model that could balance economic prosperity, environmental issues and social sustainability. In this context, is shaping the sustainability-adjusted global competitiveness index that take into consideration two new dimensions – environmental and social. Practically, the triple bottom line concept will be extrapolated from the microeconomic level to the macroecon…

An innovative model for a sustainability report in no-profit organizations

2016

After a review of the literature, the research aims to build a sustainability report for NPOs through a set of economic, environmental and social indicators based on best international practice. Then the report will be applied to a voluntary service centre (CSV) which, in terms of function and organisation, over a wide range, contains all the social and economic environmental variables to be monitored in any NPOs. The findings appear to suggest an innovative model of sustainability report for NPOs with a significant set of indicators that offer a new disclosure of the activity carried on by the organisation. The work is tested only on a limited number of NPOs which can be extended in the fu…

Sustainability Triple Bottom Line Management Enhancement for Municipal Level: Integrated Governance Environment Dimension

2015

To ensure sustainable development of a municipality, it is necessary to improve the potential for development of measures of environmental management balancing the economic, social and environmental dimensions. A lot of municipalities having successfully established goals and objectives, tend to sustainable management, evaluate the quality of local governance, including preparation of documents of the environmental policy and setting the administrative tasks and priorities related to assumptions of sustainable development, systemic evaluation, interdisciplinary approach, and implementation of governance as a comprehensive collaborative management. This review article describes the main comp…

Arguments in Favor of Moving to a Sustainable Business Model in the Apiary Industry

2017

Abstract Today’s society faces major challenges in meeting future global food demands and solving biodiversity loss, and it quickly needs to find ways in addressing these issues. The places to look for solutions come from the economic sectors that employ the most powerful pressure on these issues such as agriculture. Apiculture, as a branch of agriculture is being more and more recognized as sustaining human life and contributing to sustainability. However, the sector records a progressive decline of honey bees. Therefore, a rapid restructuring needs to take place in agricultural markets, in general, as well as in apiary agribusinesses. Although important, technological progress is insuffic…

Analysis of the Impact of the Triple Helix on Sustainable Innovation Targets in Spanish Technology Companies

2020

The establishment of broad-based networks, such as the Triple Helix, for innovation and sustainability is sufficiently corroborated. In this work we suggest that the information received from the Triple Helix has a significant and different impact on the objectives of sustainable innovation, depending on whether companies cooperate or not. To this end, an empirical analysis of a stratified sample of more than 5000 Spanish medium and high technology companies in 2010-2014-2015 was carried out. The results confirm that companies that do not cooperate place more importance on the information received from the Triple Helix to establish their sustainable innovation targets.

Molecular phylogeny of Atripliceae (Chenopodioideae, Chenopodiaceae): Implications for systematics, biogeography, flower and fruit evolution, and the…

2011

Premise of the study : Atripliceae (Chenopodiaceae), including Atriplex (300 spp.) as the largest genus of the family, are an ecologically important group of steppes and semideserts worldwide. Relationships in Atripliceae are poorly understood due to obscure and potentially convergent morphological characters. Methods : Using sequence variation of two chloroplast markers ( rbcL gene, atpB-rbcL spacer) and one nrDNA marker (ITS) analyzed with BEAST, we investigated the systematics and biogeography of Atripliceae. We surveyed fl ower morphology and fruit anatomy to study the evolution of fland fruits in the tribe. Key results : Female fl owers with persistent foliar cover (the diagnosti…

Combined use of liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry in sy…

2012

As a suitable way for routine screening of pesticides and control of other organic contaminants in water, the combination of liquid chromatography triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) has been applied to the analysis of 63 surface and waste water samples after conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE). The extracts were screened for 43 pesticides or degradation products by LC-QqQ-MS/MS achieving limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.04 to 2 ng L(-1). Of the 43 selected pesticides, 33 were detected in water samples. The ESI-QTOF MS instrument was run using two simultaneous acquisi…

ChemInform Abstract: Relaxation Phenomena of a Triplet Spin Probe in Glassy and Crystalline o-Terphenyl.

2010

The authors used quinoxaline in its photoexcited triplet state as a spin probe in order to measure the spin-lattice relaxation rate in o-terphenyl glass as a function of temperature. They found a power law with an exponent close to 2. Since o-terphenyl can easily be crystallized, they investigated the crystal, too. Below 3.5 K the spin is highly polarized, contrary to the behavior in the glass, where it reaches thermal equilibrium down to the lowest temperatures of their experiment (1.4 K). Around 3.5 K the polarization in the crystal vanishes. Above it appears with opposite sign due to thermal equilibration.
