Female choice in the kestrel under different availability of mating options

1992

Abstract Mate choice in relation to its fitness consequences on females was studied in kestrels, Falco tinnunculus , in western Finland. The breeding season is short with rapidly declining prospects of successful breeding, suggesting that females should make their mating decision quickly. On average, males arrived a few days before females, but late males arrived much later than early females. Pairs were usually formed within 2 days of male arrival, and only early males were available to early females. Options for female choice differed considerably in years of different kestrel density. In a good vole year, 1988, females had many males to choose from, but in poor vole years, 1989 and 1990,…

I RUSTICA MUNERA DI CORIDONE (A MARGINE DI VERG., ECL. 2, 45-55)

2022

Within the second Eclogue, the rustica munera offered by Corydon to Alexis (vv. 45-55), while obeying a somewhat conventional plot, reveal a complex intertextual stratigraphy. Unexpectedly, δωροφόροι of di vine rank join the shepherd in paying homage to the ephebe, bringing bas kets full of lilies and a garland of flowers and herbs, to which fruits and branches of laurel and myrtle will be added. The tradition of the rubrics of στεφανωτικὰ ἄνθη, testified by Athenaeus in the 15th book of the Deipno sophistae, allows us to test both the rate of conventionality of the entire ecphrasis, and the variations made by Vergil to the lists of flowers and herbs, as well as Greek poetry as well as genr…

Evolution of Complex Acoustic Signals in Drosophila Species

2009

species produce complex acous-tic cues, so-called courtship songs, while pursuing a female. In most of the over 100 species studied so far (see thelist of these species in Hoikkala, 2005), such cues areproduced by wing vibration. Other mechanisms of songproduction include abdomen purring (Hoy, Hoikkala, &Kaneshiro, 1988) and rapid vibrations of the whole body(Ritchie & Gleason, 1995). The carrier frequency of songsproduced through any of these actions ranges from 150 to500Hz. A hitherto unknown mechanism enables males ofsome Hawaiian species to generate songs of up to 15,000Hz(Hoikkala, Hoy, & Kaneshiro, 1989).The structure of the courtship songs of closely relatedspecies often reflects phylo…

Acute neuromuscular and endocrine responses and recovery to single session combined endurance and strength loadings: ‘Order effect’ in untrained youn…

2013

The purpose of this study was to investigate acute neuromuscular and endocrine responses and recovery to a single session of combined endurance and strength loading using two loading orders. Forty-two men were demographically matched to perform a single session of combined endurance+strength (E+S) or strength+endurance (S+E) loading. The strength loading was conducted on a leg press and included sets of power, maximal strength and hypertrophic loads with an overall duration of 30 minutes. The endurance loading was conducted on a bike ergometer and performed by continuous cycling over 30min at 65% of subject’s individual maximal Watts. Both loading conditions led to significant acute reducti…

Distribution and biology of the Blackmouth catshark Galeus melastomus in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea)

2009

The Blackmouth catshark, Galeus melastomus, Rafinesque, 1810 (Carcharhiniformes; Scyliorhinidae), is a common, although at present discarded, by- catch of the bottom trawl fisheries in the Strait of Sicily. Given its ecological interest, data gathered in experimental bottom trawl surveys were analysed in order to describe its distribution and main biological traits. The Blackmouth catshark was sampled almost exclusively on the upper slope (200-800), showing the highest frequency of occurrence (69-100%), biomass (BI; 10-85 kg*km-2) and density (DI; 54-506 N*km-2) indexes in the deeper (501-800m) grounds. Individual size (total length, TL, mm) were between 70-590 and 90-510 in females and mal…

RESEARCH PAPER: Multiple Sexual Ornamentation Signals Male Quality and Predicts Female Preference in Minnows

2010

Sexual ornamentation often consists of multiple components. Different sexual signals may indicate different aspects of mate quality or reflect quality in different time scales. On the other hand, same signals can have a dual function and are used both in male–male competition and courtship. Many fish species are capable of rapidly altering their colouration (ephemeral colour changes), but this capability is usually ignored in sexual selection studies. Here, we used experimentally manipulated social environments to study the ephemeral colour changes in multicomponent sexual signals of male minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) during male–male competition and female choice. We found that the dominant …

Data from: Two distinct genomic regions, harbouring the period and fruitless genes, affect male courtship song in Drosophila montana

2011

Acoustic signals often play a significant role in pair formation and in species recognition. Determining the genetic basis of signal divergence will help to understand signal evolution by sexual selection and its role in the speciation process. An earlier study investigated QTL for male courtship song carrier frequency in Drosophila montana using microsatellite markers. We refined this study by adding to the linkage map markers for ten candidate genes known to affect song production in D. melanogaster. We also extended the analyses to additional song characters (pulse train length, pulse number, interpulse interval, pulse length and cycle number). Our results indicate that loci in two diffe…

Endocrine Challenges in Patients with Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices

2021

Heart failure (HF) remains a leading cause of morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. Advancement of mechanical circulatory support technology has led to the use of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), reducing hospitalizations, and improving quality of life and outcomes in advanced HF. Recent studies have highlighted how metabolic and endocrine dysfunction may be a consequence of, or associated with, HF, and may represent a novel (still neglected) therapeutic target in the treatment of HF. On the other hand, it is not clear whether LVAD support, may impact the outcome by also improving organ perfusion as well as improving the neuro-hormonal state of the pat…

Dualistisches Fortpflanzungsverhalten bei dem protogynen LippfischThalassoma bifasciatum und einige Beobachtungen über dessen Tag-Nacht-Wechsel

1973

1.Thalassoma bifasciatum is a protogynous wrasse with (partial) sexual dimorphism and male dichromatism. Sex-inversion takes place without affecting the color pattern. 2. Males with female-like color dress indulge in group spawning; males with the bright color pattern perform pair spawning. 3. Among the brightly colored males exists a well-established hierarchy. Dominant males only have a particular spawning area in which they spawn daily at a certain time around noon. The spawning area is optically marked by conspicuous behavior of the bright male. Courtship activities towards individual partners are rather superficial. 4. The female has the leading role in pair spawning. In the extremely …
