Modeling joint and marginal distributions in the analysis of categorical panel data

2001

This article presents a unifying approach to the analysis of repeated univariate categorical (ordered) responses based on the application of the generalized log-linear modeling framework proposed by Lang and Agresti. It is shown that three important research questions in longitudinal studies can be addressed simultaneously. These questions are the following: What is the overall dependence structure of the repeated responses? What is the structure of the change between consecutive time points? and What is the structure of the change in the marginal distributions? Each of these questions involves specifying log-linear models for different marginal distributions of the multiway cross classifi…

Reintegration Failure and Outsourcing Upside: Organisation of Public Transport in Norway

2014

AbstractAfter two decades of public sector outsourcing, debates for reintegration of services back into the public sector have emerged. However, so far outsourcing remains prevalent and reintegration is sparsely utilised. An in-depth analysis of the reorganisation of public transport in a Norwegian county, Sor-Trondelag, provides three key reasons as to why there is an ‘outsourcing upside’. Firstly, existing structures limit available alternatives for legislators, thereby making reintegration of public services back into public hands difficult. Secondly, under certain conditions competitive tendering may enhance political steering and thus make outsourcing politically desirable. Thirdly, th…

The impact of communicating digital technologies: How information and communication technology journalists conceptualize their influence on the audie…

2012

Information technology is ever-changing. Information and communication technology (ICT) journalists play a significant part in diffusing, explaining and interpreting these new technologies and in forging the societal understanding of future trends, influencing both their audience and the developers they cover. They are important gatekeepers and their coverage is – most likely – decisive for the success or failure of new products. To explore this function of ICT journalism, an online survey of 102 ICT journalists in Germany was conducted, including 32 journalists in managing roles. This study focuses on two research questions: (a) how do ICT journalists perceive their relationship to and the…

The futures of offshoring FDI in high-tech sectors

2010

This paper examines what is still a relatively new phenomenon in the literature, the outsourcing/offshoring of high-technology manufacturing and services. This has become a concern for both policy makers and academics for two reasons. Firstly, policy makers have become concerned that the offshoring of high-technology sectors in the West will follow the more labour intensive sectors, and move to lower cost locations. Secondly, international business theory has tended to view low costs, and high levels of indigenous technological development as being the two main drivers of location advantage in the attraction of FDI. We show that this may not be the case for offshored high-technology manufac…

Politiskā elite pēc Latvijas Republikas neatkarības atjaunošanas

2017

Sabrūkot Padomju Savienībai, Latvijas Republika atguva savu valstisko neatkarību. Mainoties valsts pārvaldes struktūrām, atvērts paliek jautājums par to, cik ļoti lielā mērā mainās personas, kas aizpilda amatu šajās pārvaldes struktūrās. Darbā tiek pētīta LR jaunās politiskās elites biogrāfija 1985., 1990. un 1995.gadā. Apkopotie jaunās elites biogrāfiskie dati tiek analizēti pēc elites cirkulācijas un elites reprodukcijas teorijām. Pēc analīzes veikšanas četros biogrāfiskajos aspektos, tiek secināts, ka Latvijā pēc pārejas izveidojusies jaunā politiskā elite, ir veidojusies vairāk elites cirkulācijas ceļā. Pētījumā secināts, ka jaunās elites locekļu vairums ieņēmuši pozīcijas elitē arī 199…

Numerical study of soliton stability, resolution and interactions in the 3D Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation

2021

International audience; We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in three spatial dimensions. The equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, though, not completely integrable. This equation is L-2-subcritical, and thus, solutions exist globally, for example, in the H-1 energy space. We first study stability of solitons with various perturbations in sizes and symmetry, and show asymptotic stability and formation of radiation, confirming the asymptotic stability result in Farah et al. (0000) for a larger class of initial data. We then investigate the solution behavior for different localizations and rates of de…

A GALTON-WATSON BRANCHING PROCESS IN VARYING ENVIRONMENTS WITH ESSENTIALLY CONSTANT OFFSPRING MEANS AND TWO RATES OF GROWTH1

1983

Summary A Galton-Watson process in varying environments (Zn), with essentially constant offspring means, i.e. E(Zn)/mnα∈(0, ∞), and exactly two rates of growth is constructed. The underlying sample space Ω can be decomposed into parts A and B such that (Zn)n grows like 2non A and like mnon B (m > 4).

A Galton–Watson process with a threshold

2016

Abstract In this paper we study a special class of size dependent branching processes. We assume that for some positive integer K as long as the population size does not exceed level K, the process evolves as a discrete-time supercritical branching process, and when the population size exceeds level K, it evolves as a subcritical or critical branching process. It is shown that this process does die out in finite time T. The question of when the mean value E(T) is finite or infinite is also addressed.
