Hitting straight lines by compound Poisson process paths
1990
In a recent article Mallows and Nair (1989,Ann. Inst. Statist. Math.,41, 1–8) determined the probability of intersectionP{X(t)=αt for somet≥0} between a compound Poisson process {X(t), t≥0} and a straight line through the origin. Using four different approaches (direct probabilistic, via differential equations and via Laplace transforms) we extend their results to obtain the probability of intersection between {X(t), t≥0} and arbitrary lines. Also, we display a relationship with the theory of Galton-Watson processes. Additional results concern the intersections with two (or more) parallel lines.

2016
The author should be commended for his outstanding contribution to the literature on Bayesian regression tree models. The author introduces three innovative sampling approaches which allow for efficient traversal of the model space. In this response, we add a fourth alternative.
Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Substituted 2-Phenacylbenzoxazoles
2013
1 H and 13C NMR spectra of eleven 2-phenacylbenzoxazoles (ketimine form) show that their CDCl3-solutions contains also (Z)-2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-1-phenylethenols (enolimine form). Intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the latter tautomer was found to be significantly weaker than that one in respective (Z)-2-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylvinyl)pyridines. Integrals of the 1 H NMR signals were used to evaluate the molar ratio of the tautomers. Strong electron-donating substituents were found to stabilize the ketimine tautomer. pKT (negative logarithm of the equilibrium constant, KT = [ketimine]/[enolimine]) was found to be linearly dependent on the Hammett substituent constant σ. The results of the MP2 ab…
Entstehen und Scheitern Strategischer Allianzen in der Telekommunikationsbranche
2001
Hungenberg (1998) has shown in this journal that strategic alliances have become an important strategic instrument in the telecommunications industry. Building up on this investigation we analyze the motives for the formation and failure of strategic alliances on the basis of a content analysis of the business newspaper “Handelsblatt” from 1995–1997. We show that in the telecommunications sector access to know-how and other resources as well as market access are the primary motives for the formation of strategic alliances. In contrast to other industries, cost and time advantages as motives are not relevant at all. The primary reason for the failure of strategic alliances was strategic reor…
Bayesian Estimation of Political Transition Matrices
1994
A decision framework is used to propose a procedure designed to estimate the reallocation of the vote of each individual party between two consecutive political elections, given the results of the elections, the information provided by a sample survey, and some assumptions on the hierarchical structure of the population.
Product Recalls and Supply Chain Responsiveness
2015
The increase in product recalls which occurred in recent years is mainly due to the globalization of the supply chains, in particular the outsourcing and offshoring of manufacturing and distribution. Besides being the main cause of recall, in this paper we argue that outsourcing (domestic and international) and offshoring may also affect the supply chain responsiveness in managing the recall itself. We test a number of hypotheses on this theme empirically on the pharmaceutical sector by using data collected from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Comment on “Surface diffusion near the points corresponding to continuous phase transitions” [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)]
1999
It is well known that unlike static equilibrium properties, kinetic quantities in Monte Carlo simulations are very sensitive to the details of the algorithm used for the microscopic transition rates. This is particularly true near the critical region where fluctuations are pronounced. We demonstrate that when diffusion of oxygen adatoms near the order–disorder transition of a lattice-gas model of the O/W(110) model system is studied, the transition rates must be chosen carefully. In particular, we show that the choice by Uebing and Zhdanov [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)] is inappropriate for the study of critical effects in diffusion.

Exploitation of cryptocurrencies as a tool for tax evasion: technological and regulatory issues
2020
Tax evasion is a crime that harms the national economies, society and indirectly affects all the residents of each state. Now that after a long time of international efforts the traditional tax evasion tools have eventually been put under a reasonable control, a new technology has emerged able to facilitate efficient tax evasion. The main objectives of this research are to identify the regulatory challenges of the non-precedent technology, to analyse the applicability of the current EU legislation aimed at tax evasion prevention to the exploitation of cryptocurrencies, and to assess the recommendations of academics and international organizations for a possible future regulation. This resea…
