Student Athletes’ Causal Attributions for Sport and School Achievement in Relation to Sport Dropout and Grade Point Average
2023
The present study longitudinally examined stability and change in the attributional profiles of Finnish student athletes (n = 391) in upper secondary sport schools. Moreover, it examined the extent to which these profiles, and changes in them, were associated with athletes’ level of sport competition and school achievements and dropouts at the end of upper secondary sport school. Using latent profile analysis, five different and highly stable attributional profiles were identified for student athletes: (a) depressive (6.9%), (b) athletic self-serving (23.0%), (c) average (16.4%), (d) learned helplessness (30.9%), and (e) responsible (22.8%). The results further showed that over the 3-year s…

Critical issues and future prospects of the secondary substation in smart grid context
2014
This paper is focused on the new role of the secondary substation in the smart grids context. This innovative view has been proposed and developed in the framework of two Research Projects: NewCabELARC Project and Reipersei Project. The latter provides a concrete and comprehensive low cost solutions for the smart grid monitoring and control, allowing the real diffusion and integration of Distributed Generation and the full exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources. In this field, this paper shows how the secondary substation (SS) takes the role of smart transducer node where innovative devices can be located, collecting the measurement data coming from the field devices (power and energy met…
Polarisation attraction and incoherent modulation instability in optical fibers
2006
This thesis, entitled « Polarisation attraction and incoherent modulation instability in optical fibers », presents a theoretical and experimental study of two new processes from the nonlinear optic in optical fibers domain. We introduce in the first chapter some theoretical notions useful for the comprehension of this work. Then, we demonstrate in the second chapter that it is possible to generate some modulation instability in optical fibers using a partially coherent optical beam. We highlight and observe the main properties of the phenomenon. We study the polarisation attraction in isotropic fibers process in the third chapter. Our work proves the existence of the phenomenon, and permit…
Refractive index sensing by a silicon metasurface
2022
The availability of smart materials represents a key enabling milestone for the realization of smart sensors. In this research field, optical sensing has gained a lot of attention in various applications ranging from basic physics to chemistry and biology. Here, we exploit the non-invasive nature of light to achieve an innovative sensor based on all-optical dielectric nano-resonators arranged in a periodic fashion. The proposed sensor can measure refractive index changes up to 10(-6).
Optical turbulence measurements and channel modeling of an indoor Free Space Optics link (Versione estesa)
2014
In this work, we propose an indoor experimental set-up able to generate several optical turbulence conditions in a Free Space Optics link. Using this set-up, we prove the effectiveness of an irradiance time-series generator based on the Gamma-Gamma model and able to predict the irradiance fluctuations at the receiver, under both weak and moderate turbulence conditions.
FREE SPACE OPTICS LINKS AFFECTED BY OPTICAL TURBULENCE: CHANNEL MODELING, MEASUREMENTS AND CODING TECHNIQUES FOR ERROR MITIGATION
2014
FSO is an optical wireless line-of-sight communication system able to offer good broadband performance, electromagnetic interference immunity, high security, license-free operation, low power consumption, ease of relocation, and straightforward installation. It represents a modern technology, significantly functional when it is impossible, expensive or complex to use physical connections or radio links. Unfortunately, since the transmission medium in a terrestrial FSO link is the air, these communications are strongly dependent on various atmospheric phenomena (e.g., rain, snow, optical turbulence and, especially, fog) that can cause losses and fading. Therefore, in worst-case conditions, i…

Utveckling av det produktiva lexikonet i berättelser skrivna av finska gymnasister
2015
Sanastolla on keskeinen merkitys kielen oppimisessa ja osaamisessa. Varsinkin produktiivinen sanasto, jota kielenkäyttäjä pystyy kieltä tuottaessaan hyödyntämään, on siinä erityisen tärkeässä roolissa sillä se mahdollistaa kommunikoinnin muiden kielenkäyttäjien kanssa. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka lukiolaisten produktiivinen sanavarasto kehittyy lukio-opintojen pakollisten ruotsin ja englannin kurssien aikana. Erityisenä mielenkiinnonkohteena olivat neljä avointa sanaluokkaa (substantiivit, verbit, adjektiivit, adverbit), joiden kehittymistä tarkasteltiin pääasiassa kvantitatiivisten tutkimusmenetelmien, kuten TTR-metodin, avulla. Laajemman kokonaiskuvan saamiseksi kva…
Organic food consumption: The relevance of the health attribute
2020
During the last decades, organic food products have become the main sustainable alternative to conventional food consumption. Among the several organic food attributes that consumers recognize in organic food, healthiness has been reported as the primary motivation to buy products certified as organic. The objective of the current study is to assess the relative weight of the health attribute among other recognized organic food attributes. To achieve this aim, a multiple price list (MPL) methodology is adopted to elicit consumers&rsquo
