Biological properties of carotenoids extracted from Halobacterium halobium isolated from a Tunisian solar saltern

2013

Abstract Background Bioactive molecules have received increasing attention due to their nutraceutical attributes and anticancer, antioxidant, antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing properties. This study aimed to investigate the biological properties of carotenoids extracted from Archaea. Methods Halophilic Archaea strains were isolated from the brine of a local crystallizer pond (TS7) of a solar saltern at Sfax, Tunisia. The most carotenoid-producing strain (M8) was investigated on heptoma cell line (HepG2), and its viability was assessed by the MTT-test. The cells were incubated with different sub-lethal extract rates, with carotenoid concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.5 μM. Antioxida…

Una ricerca interculturale in Sicilia: l'innamoramento vissuto dagli adolescenti tunisini nati a Mazara del Vallo

2011

Beyond The Wall, Notes An Multicultural Mediterranean Landscape

2009

Two New Glycosides from Astragalus caprinus

2001

A new glycoside of flavonol (1) and a new glycoside of a cycloartane-type triterpene (2) were isolated from the leaves and the roots of Astragalus caprinus, respectively. Their structures were elucidated in turn by spectroscopic data interpretation as 3-O-[[beta-D-xylopyranosyl(1-->3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-->6)][beta-D-apiofuranosyl(1-->2)]]-beta-D-galactopyranosyl kaempferol (1) and 3-O-(beta-D-xylopyranosyl)-24-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-20,25-epoxycycloartane-3beta,6alpha,16beta,24alpha-tetrol (2).

The Albian (Vraconnian)-Cenomanian boundary at the western Tethyan margins (Central Tunisia and southeastern France).

2008

AbstractThrough the description and interpretation of the position of macro- and microfossils in several sections of the Albian-Cenomanian boundary in SE France and Central Tunisia, a comparison is made between the north and south margins of the Tethyan Ocean by using the occurrences of marker bioevents. For the planktonic foraminifera, the criterions applicable for the accurate determination of Thalmanninella globotruncanoides (Sigal) – the marker species for the base of the Cenomanian stage – are discussed. The species Th. globotruncanoides and the intermediate forms with its ancestor Th. caroni (Ion) are illustrated. For the ammonites, two subjects are new. Firstly, the species Stoliczka…

Genetic architecture of the marbled goby Pomatoschistus marmoratus (Perciformes, Gobiidae) in the Mediterranean Sea

2011

The marbled goby Pomatoschistus marmoratus, a species inhabiting coastal Mediterranean lagoons, has been studied by measuring its mitochondrial DNA variation. This analysis revealed a Mediterranean west vs east split and, subsequently, an eastern differentiation among the Libyan–Tunisian Gulf, the Adriatic Sea and the Aegean Sea. The high cohesion between the samples collected in the vast area of western Mediterranean contrasts with the genetic mosaic of the more sub-structured eastern Mediterranean. This western homogeneity can not yet be fully explained even if a human-mediated migratory flow, due to a maritime traffic, has been posited. The pattern in the eastern basin revealed a genetic…
