A Light Insight into Latvian and Lithuanian ICT Terminology: Whether Kindred Language Imply Kindred Terminology?

Lithuanian and Latvian are two closely related languages, the only two of the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages. They are quite similar and share a great deal of vocabulary and grammar features, but not close enough to make conversation possible. The paper reveals that commonalities between Latvian and Lithuanian information and communication technologies (ICT) terms are mostly due internationalisms, there are only small proportion of terms with common Baltic word-roots; influence of English language in Latvian and Lithuanian ICT terminology is moderate, if not minor; deliberately or unawares, Lithuanian terminologists follow the same rules as their Latvian counterparts.

A comprehensive study of structure and properties of nanocrystalline zinc peroxide

Abstract Nanocrystalline zinc peroxide (nano-ZnO2) was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and comprehensively studied using several experimental techniques. Its crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the average crystallite size of 22 nm was estimated by Rietveld refinement. The temperature-dependent local environment around zinc atoms was reconstructed using reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis from the Zn K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. The indirect band gap of about 4.6 eV was found using optical absorption spectroscopy. Lattice dynamics of nano-ZnO2 was studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Improving uptake of screening for colorectal cancer: a study on invitation strategies and different test kit use

Objective The aim of this study was to compare the uptake of mail-delivered tests for colorectal cancer screening. We assessed the effect of an advance notification letter and a reminder letter, and analysed the proportion of inappropriately handled tests. Materials and methods Fifteen thousand randomly selected residents of Latvia aged 50–74 years were allocated to receive one of three different test systems: either a guaiac faecal occult blood test (gFOBT) or one of two laboratory-based immunochemical tests (FIT) – FOB Gold or OC-Sensor. Collaborative Management in Norwegian Municipalities: Do Middle Managers Make a Difference?

Norway is an example of the Nordic model in which the local level is of fundamental importance. However, the municipalities are relatively small and increasingly subject to decentralisation of their activities. To compensate for scale disadvantages, a mixture of collaborative activities is pursued in order to build system capacity. Paradoxically, little is known about collaboration among key stakeholders. This article makes a contribution to reducing this knowledge gap by focusing on mid-level managers and municipal departments.
