Prediction of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus based on a twenty-year follow-up of the Ventimiglia heart study.

2011

A novel algorithm to predict incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (iT2DM) is presented considering data from a 20-year prospective study in a Southern Italy population. Eight hundred and fifty-eight out of 1,351 subjects (24-85 years range of age) were selected. Incident type 2 diabetes was diagnosed in 103 patients in a 20-year follow-up. The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) and the Framingham Offspring Study simple clinical model (FOS) have been used as reference algorithms. Two custom algorithms have been created using Cox parametric hazard models followed by PROBIT analyses: the first one (VHSRISK) includes all the study subjects and the second one (VHS95RISK) evaluates separately su…

Glycaemic variability and inflammation in subjects with metabolic syndrome.

2008

Subjects who develop diabetes have an increased cardiovascular risk even before the appearance of diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the glycaemic variability measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM CV%) in nondiabetic subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS) and to explore if glycaemic variability was associated with circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, or with an anti-inflammatory factor like adiponectin. Three groups of obese subjects with (MS+: 6m, 8f; BMI 33.1 ± 1.4 mean ± SEM) or without metabolic syndrome (MS−: 2m, 4f; BMI 29.2 ± 2.2) and with MS associated with type 2 diabetes (MS/T2D: 3m, 5f; BMI 32.9 ± 1.4) were investigated. …

Classical cardiovascular risk factors according to fasting plasma glucose levels

2007

To compare the prevalence of classical cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in our population according to fasting plasma glucose levels (FPG).We have studied 344 subjects between 20-70 years of age, recruited in a Primary Care Clinic. Subjects were divided into four groups according to their fasting plasma glucose (FPG) values: normal plasma glucose (NG) when FPG5.6 mmol/L; FPG between 5.6 and 6.0 mmol/L (FPG1); FPG between 6.1-6.9 mmol/L (FPG2); and diabetes (DM) FPGor = 7 mmol/L or previous diagnosis of diabetes. Cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, TC/HDL-C index and Apo B values), presence of the MetS and indirect measure of insulin resistance (HOMA) w…

The basal energy expenditure of female athletes vs. sedentary women as related to their family history of type 2 diabetes

2001

The purpose of this study was to investigate the basal metabolic rate (BMR) in 16 professional sportswomen (soccer players) versus 15 sedentary women, as related to the presence (FH+) or absence (FH-) of a family history of type 2 diabetes. The sportswomen, in toto, had a significantly higher BMR than expected from predictive equations (+14.92%). However, the difference was limited only to FH- sportswomen (+18.66%, p<0.0005). FH- sportswomen showed a significantly higher measured BMR than FH+ sportswomen (p<0.005), and FH+ (p=0.058) and than FH- (p<0.05) sedentary women. There were no other significant differences relative to physical, metabolic and plasmatic data between the groups. The sp…

Clinical applicability and cost-effectiveness of DIABSCORE in screening for type 2 diabetes in primary care

2017

Aims: To evaluate the applicability and cost-effectiveness of a clinical risk score (DIABSCORE) to screen for type 2 diabetes in primary care patients. Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional study of 10,508 adult no previously diagnosed with diabetes, in 2 Spanish regions (Canary Islands and Valencian Community). The variables comprising DIABSCORE were age, waist to height ratio, family history of diabetes and gestational diabetes. ROC curves were obtained; the diabetes prevalences odds ratios (HbA1c >= 6.5%) between patients exposed and not exposed to DIABSCORE >= 100, and to fasting blood glucose >= 126 mg/dL were calculated. The opinions of both the professionals and the patients concernin…

Visceral adiposity index and DHEAS are useful markers of diabetes risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

2014

ObjectiveOn the basis of the known diabetes risk in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), recent guidelines of the Endocrine Society recommend the use of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to screen for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in all women with PCOS. However, given the high prevalence of PCOS, OGTT would have a high cost–benefit ratio. In this study, we identified, through a receiver operating characteristic analysis, simple predictive markers of the composite endpoint (impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or IGT or IFG+IGT or T2DM) in women with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria.DesignWe conducted a cross-sectional study of 241 women with PCOS in a unive…

Effects of Aging on Serum Ionized and Cytosolic Free Calcium

1999

Abstract —Elevated cytosolic free calcium (Ca i ) and reciprocally reduced, extracellular ionized calcium (Ca-ion) levels are observed in both hypertension and non–insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Because the changes of vascular function and insulin sensitivity in these conditions resemble the changes associated with “normal” aging, we wondered to what extent similar alterations in calcium metabolism occur with aging per se in the absence of overt hypertension or diabetes. We therefore measured platelet Ca i levels by spectrofluorometry and serum Ca-ion levels in normotensive, nondiabetic, healthy, normal, elderly (>65 years old) subjects, mean age ±SEM, 72.2±1.5 years old (…

Association of the Dietary-Based Diabetes-Risk Score (DDS) with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus in the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (…

2019

AbstractIt is crucial to identify people at risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to implement preventive interventions in order to address these pandemics. A simple score exclusively based on dietary components, the Dietary-Based Diabetes-Risk Score (DDS) showed a strong inverse association with incident T2DM. The objective was to assess the association between DDS and the risk of GDM in a cohort of Spanish university graduates. The ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ project is a prospective and dynamic cohort which included data of 3455 women who notified pregnancies between 1999 and 2012. The diagnosis of GDM is self-reported and further confi…

Causal relationship of hepatic fat with liver damage and insulin resistance in nonalcoholic fatty liver

2017

Abstract Background and Aims Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is epidemiologically associated with hepatic and metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether hepatic fat accumulation has a causal role in determining liver damage and insulin resistance. Methods We performed a Mendelian randomization analysis using risk alleles in PNPLA3, TM6SF2, GCKR and MBOAT7, and a polygenic risk score for hepatic fat, as instruments. We evaluated complementary cohorts of at‐risk individuals and individuals from the general population: 1515 from the liver biopsy cohort (LBC), 3329 from the Swedish Obese Subjects Study (SOS) and 4570 from the population‐based Dallas Heart Study (DHS).
