« Rien dans les mains, rien dans les poches ». Louis Gernet e Jean-Pierre Vernant e lo studio della tirannide in Grecia

2022

The article aims both at exploring the contribution of L. Gernet and J.-P. Vernant to the study of tyranny in Greece and at reconstructing the intellectual and academic context in which these considerations were developed. These two scholars devoted only a couple of short essays to that topic, managing to trace the behavioural patterns of the Greek tyrants in the mythical past. The results that they reached and the approach they applied to the ancient sources arose a wide debate and had a considerable impact on the later studies on the tyranny.

Settore L-ANT/02 - Storia GrecaThe history of Greek Sicily is marked at its key moments by the persistent image of Dinomenid Gelon. This work analyses the paradigmatic value taken on by his figure in the civic memory of the people of Syracuse and in historiographic production. It also reconstructs the political dynamics which pushed the principal tyrants of Syracuse (from Dionysius I to Hiero II) to establish comparisons with Gelon. His exemplum was used to legitimate political actions and commitment against the Carthaginianparticular attention was also given to the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus and the role that the figure of Dinomenid assumes in itregarding these aspects the work of this author seems to have sometimes the signs of a personal interpretation of history: one that cannot always be explained in relation to the use of the two principal sources for Western history Timaeus and Philistos.

Torre del Greco, villa marittima in contrada Sora: 65. Statua di Satiro

2019

2017

This paper focuses on the subject of conversion in Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim’s dramatic plays (or «dramatic dialogues») and, chiefly, in the first of them, the Gallicanus. The play is divided in two parts and is entirely founded on hagiograhical sources, regarding some episodes about the conversion of Gallican, emperor Constantine’s commander-in-chief (BHL 3236: Conversio Gallicani principis militiae), and the martyrdom of primicerii John and Paul (BHL 3242: Passio martyrum Iohannis et Pauli). Through a strict analysis of Hrotsvitha’s play’s matter, can be highlighted the different typologies of the conversion’s theme, which involves a spiritual renovation, and the treatment of dramatic plo…

When the Past Makes Saints: The Knights of Malta from Sinners to Martyrs in "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare di S. Giovanni Gi…

2022

After the fall of Rhodes (1522), the Order of St. John needed to recover its reputation as militia Christi and to redraft its chivalrous ideals within the context of the Catholic Renewal. However, this so-called Religion met this challenge partially and late, although it represented its glorious past as a gallery of saints and martyrs, even if they were not always officially recognised by the Church. This past, since its origin in the Holy Land, casted a shadow of sanctity into the present, confirming this Religion as being semper eadem. Such a representation is found in the book Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano, published in 1619 in Ital…

Effects of Oleuropein and Hydroxytyrosol on Inflammatory Mediators: Consequences on Inflammaging

2022

Aging is associated with a low-grade, systemic inflammatory state defined as “inflammaging”, ruled by the loss of proper regulation of the immune system leading to the accumulation of pro-inflammatory mediators. Such a condition is closely connected to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. A number of studies demonstrate that olive oil phenolic compound oleuropein and its derivative hydroxytyrosol contribute to modulating tissue inflammation and oxidative stress, thus becoming attractive potential candidates to be used in the context of nutraceutical interventions, in order to ameliorate systemic inflammation in aging subjects. In this review, we aim to summarize the available d…

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Nutritionally Relevant Concentrations of Oleuropein and Hydroxytyrosol on Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells: An Age-Rel…

2023

: Immunosenescence and inflammaging facilitate the insurgence of chronic diseases. The Mediterranean diet is a non-invasive intervention to improve the chronic low-grade inflammatory status associated with aging. Olive oil oleuropein (OLE) and hydroxytyrosol (HT) demonstrated a controversial modulatory action on inflammation in vitro when tested at concentrations exceeding those detectable in human plasma. We studied the potential anti-inflammatory effects of OLE and HT at nutritionally relevant concentrations on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as regards cell viability, frequency of leukocyte subsets, and cytokine release, performing an age-focused analysis on two groups of subj…

Rheological studies of moderately concentrated polystyrene solutions. I. A new method for the extrapolation of the zero-shear viscosity

1983

Measurements of the viscosity coefficient η of solutions of polystyrene (Mw = 6.0 × 105 and 1.77 × 106) in trans-decalin (TD, θ solvent) and toluene (TL, good solvent) as function of shear rate (11−104 s−1), concentration (4.24−11.21 wt %), and temperature (10–50°C) are reported. As a new theoretically grounded method for the determination of the zero-shear viscosity η0 it is proposed to plot η as a function of . The intercepts of the straight lines obtained by this procedure give η0 in good agreement with directly measured values.
