Polymerizable cationic and zwitterionic dialkyl maleates with different hydrophobic chain lengths (R = C10H21, C12H25, C16H33, C18H37) and different counterions (I, Br, HSO4) for the cationic hydrophilic part, as well as some similar surfactants, dialkyl succinates, were used in batch and seeded emulsion polymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate. All surfactants, when used in emulsion polymerization, provide good stability to the styrene/butyl acrylate latices. A styrene/butyl acrylate latex prepared with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a reference. Vapor Pressures of Polymer Solutions and the Modeling of Their Composition Dependence

Equilibrium vapor pressures, p, are reported for the systems tetrahydrofuran + poly(vinyl methyl ether) and tetrahydrofuran + polystyrene at 20, 40, and 60 °C. These data plus information from the literature serve to demonstrate that the composition dependence of p can be modeled quantitatively for polymer solutions in thermodynamically very different solvents by means of three, physically meaningful parameters.

The generalized intrinsic viscosity {η} (hydrodynamic volume of the solute at arbitrary polymer concentration c) – introduced by analogy to the intrinsic viscosity [η] – provides access to the degree of coil overlap Ω for polyelectrolyte solutions in pure water or in saline water. The experimental basis of this investigation consists in viscosity measurements as a function of c for a large number of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Na-PSS) samples covering the molecular weight range from 0.91 to 1000 kg mol−1. The accurate modeling of these dependencies with a maximum of three parameters yields detailed information on Ω as a function of (c[η]) in the absence and in the presence of extra salt. …

(p-Sulfomethyl)phenylalanine as a mimic of O-sulfatyl-tyrosine in synthetic partial sequences of P-Selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1)

Abstract Fmoc- l -( p -sulfomethyl)phenylalanine, a bioisosteric mimic of acid-sensitive O -sulfatyl tyrosine, was synthesized from l -tyrosine according to a novel route. Partial sequences of the recognition site of P-Selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1), which contain (sulfomethyl)phenylalanine were synthesized on solid-phase. By fragment condensation, a sialyl Lewis x peptide conjugate containing a (sulfomethyl)phenylalanine mimic of O -sulfatyl tyrosine was prepared without destruction of the acid-sensitive fucoside bond within the saccharide side chain. Compounds of this type are of interest as sufficiently acid-stable potential inhibitors of P-Selectin in inflammatory processes.

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes

Abstract Chromatographic data for sodium polystyrene sulphonate were obtained on both silica- and polymer-based size-exclusion supports using mobile phases of various pH and ionic strength. Deviations of the elution volume were observed towards both lower and higher values relative to the reference calibration graph obtained with uncharged standards. An empirical correlation is proposed in order to account for all the secondary effects observed. The general applicability of this correlation was further tested for chromatographic data obtained for a series of peptides and proteins on a silica-based support under very different eluent conditions. RP-HPLC Determination of Tiger Nut and Orgeat Amino Acid Contents

The amino acid profile of 11 samples of tiger nuts ( Cyperus esculentusL.) grown in the area of “L'Horta Nord” in Valencia (Spain) and one sample of African origin were determined, along with the amino acid contents of 10 samples of natural orgeat from Valencia. Protein was hydrolysed by hydrochloric acid at 110 °C for 23 h, and amino acids were derivatised with AQC and determined by RP-HPLC with fluorescence detection. The chromatographic conditions were optimised. An apparatus for turbidimetric measurements of demixing temperatures under shear flow is presented, and the results of experiments with trans-decahydronaphthalene/polystyrene (TD/PS) solutions, investigating molecular weights ranging from 100 kg/mol to 1770 kg/mol, are compared with viscometric data. It is found that the sign and magnitude of shear effects depend on molecular weight (Mw), polymer concentration (c2), and shear rate (). For the first time, it was possible to study a solution which exhibits shear dissolution at low shear rates but shear demixing at high shear rates.

Precipitation chromatography. III. Optimization of the experimental conditions and determination of the polydispersity of fractions

The influence of the solvent–nonsolvent gradient and the temperature gradient on the efficiency of the precipitation chromatography is investigated with radically and anionically prepared polystyrene samples. Only a combination of both gradients gives optimal effectiveness of the column. The separating power of the column was determined by using mixtures of well defined samples. From the elution curves of the mixtures the nonuniformity Ufr of fractions can be estimated. For fractions of anionically prepared polystyrenes Ufr is on the average 0.001; this value is of the same order of magnitude as the statistical error.
