Chromosomal distribution of interstitial telomeric sequences in nine neotropical primates (Platyrrhini): possible implications in evolution and phylo…

2016

To localize interstitial telomeric sequences (ITSs) and to test whether their pattern of distribution could be linked to chromosomal evolution, we hybridized telomeric sequence probes (peptide nucleic acid, PNA) on metaphases of New World monkeys: Callithrix argentata, Callithrix jacchus, Cebuella pygmaea, Saguinus oedipus, Saimiri sciureus, Aotus lemurinus griseimembra, Aotus nancymaae (Cebidae), Lagothrix lagotricha (Atelidae) and Callicebus moloch (Pithecidae), characterized by a rapid radiation and a high rate of chromosomal rearrangements. Our analysis of the probe signal localization allowed us to show in all the species analysed, as normally, the telomeric location at the terminal en…

GABA—from Inhibition to Cognition:Emerging Concepts

2018

Neural functioning and plasticity can be studied on different levels of organization and complexity ranging from the molecular and synaptic level to neural circuitry of whole brain networks. Across neuroscience different methods are being applied to better understand the role of various neurotransmitter systems in the evolution of perception and cognition. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the adult mammalian brain and, depending on the brain region, up to 25% of the total number of cortical neurons are GABAergic interneurons. At the one end of the spectrum, GABAergic neurons have been accurately described with regard to cell morphological, molecular, and electrophysiological…

The hydrophobic tails of aliphatic primary alcohols do insert into the hydrophobic core of a lipid bilayer. Thereby, they disrupt hydrophobic interactions between the lipid molecules, resulting in a decreased lipid order, i.e., an increased membrane fluidity. While aromatic alcohols, such as 2-phenylethanol, also insert into lipid bilayers and disturb the membrane organization, the impact of aromatic alcohols on the structure of biological membranes, as well as the potential physiological implication of membrane incorporation has only been studied to a limited extent. Although diverse targets are discussed to be causing the bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity of 2-phenylethanol, it is …

Receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors have become a central part of modern targeted cancer therapy. However, their curative potential is distinctly limited by both rapid resistance development and severe adverse effects. Consequently, tumor-specific drug activation based on prodrug designs, exploiting tumor-specific properties such as hypoxic oxygen conditions, is a feasible strategy to widen the therapeutic window. After proof-of-principal molecular docking studies, we have synthesized two cobalt(iii) complexes using a derivative of the clinically approved Abelson (ABL) kinase and fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitor ponatinib. Acetylacetone (acac) or methylacetylacetone (Meaca…

Health benefits of olive oil and its components: Impacts on gut microbiota antioxidant activities, and prevention of noncommunicable diseases

2019

There is an increasing trend in the consumption of olive oil, especially extra virgin olive oil, due to its health benefits. These health benefits are mainly correlated to health-promoting components of olive oil such as polyphenols, tocopherols, and carotenoids, positive effects of olive oil on the inhibition of foodborne pathogens, stimulation of the growth of beneficial microorganisms, and its antioxidant activity. These attributes make olive oil one of the leading healthy edible oils worldwide. The current study overviews the recent findings on the health benefits of olive oil consumption including its effects on gut microbiota, its antioxidant activity, and its ability in preventing car…

Are we correctly measuring the rotational viscosity of heterogeneous bituminous binders?

2020

Modified bituminous binders allow asphalt technologists to design asphalt mixtures with superior performance. However, several recent studies highlighted that due to the complexity of these material, their characterisation can be challenging since common procedures used to characterise neat bitumen might not be adequate. For instance, during high temperature rotational viscosity testing of recycled tyre rubber modified binders (RTR-MB), a number of changes may occur to the sample leading to the here-defined sample stability which in turn provides misleading results. In this study the authors want to first provide a deeper understanding of this phenomenon by a numerical analysis using a besp…

Extra-virgin olive oils storage: Effect on constituents of biological significance

2021

Abstract The high oxidative stability of virgin olive oil with respect to other vegetable oils is mainly due to its fatty acid composition, in particular, to the high monounsaturated-to-polyunsaturated ratio, and to the presence of minor compounds that play a major role in preventing oxidation. In spite of its high stability, virgin olive oil is susceptible to oxidative processes, such as enzymatic oxidation, photooxidation, and autoxidation, which mainly occur during processing and storage. Generally, extra-virgin olive oil has a relatively long shelf life of 16–18 months of storage at room temperature. The study of shelf life is generally based on determining of quality parameters (acidit…
