Activation of gp 130 by IL-6/soluble IL-6 receptor induces neuronal differentiation

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) on target cells binds to the specific IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and subsequently induces homodimerization of the signal-transducing protein gp130. Cells which express gp130 but no IL-6R and which therefore do not respond to IL-6 can be stimulated by the complex of IL-6 and soluble IL-6R (slL-6R). Here we show that on rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12), the combination of IL-6 and slL-6R but not IL-6 alone induces expression of c-fos, GAP-43 and neuron-specific enolase followed by neuron-specific differentiation and formation of a neuronal network. Time-dependent effects of polystyrene nanoparticles in brine shrimp Artemia franciscana at physiological, biochemical and molecular levels

Micro- (<5 mm) and nanoplastics (<1 μm) are emerging threats for marine ecosystems worldwide. Brine shrimp Artemia is recognized as a suitable model among planktonic species for studying the impact of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) through short and long-term bioassays. Our study aims to evaluate the time-dependent effects of cationic amino-modified PS-NH (50 nm) in A. franciscana after short- (48 h) and long-term exposure (14 days). Trawling disturbance effects on the trophic ecology of two co-generic Astropectinid species

Physical disturbance by trawling can have both negative and positive effects on populations of scavenging benthic organisms. In the present study the impact of fishing activity on feeding behaviour of the two Astropectinids, Astropecten bispinosus and A. irregularis , was assessed based on stomach contents analysis. The study was carried out along trawled seabed highlighting the positive response of the two facultative scavengers to carrion generated by trawl disturbance. Biotrickling filter modeling for styrene abatement. Part 2: Simulating a two-phase partitioning bioreactor.

Abstract A dynamic model describing styrene abatement was developed for a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter (TPPB-BTF). The model was built as a coupled set of two different systems of partial differential equations depending on whether an irrigation or a non-irrigation period was simulated. The maximum growth rate was previously calibrated from a conventional BTF treating styrene (Part 1). A general assay for epoxide hydratase using epoxides derived from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as substrates is described. Addition of dimethylsulphoxide to the incubation mixture after incubation allowed unreacted epoxide and its phenolic by-product to be extracted into light petroleum whilst the product dihydrodiol remained in the aqueous phase. The product was then extracted into ethyl acetate and estimated radiochemically. This assay gave low extraction blanks (0.8-3.8%) when six K-region epoxides of polycyclic hydrocarbons were used, with high recoveries of the corresponding dihydrodiol in the ethyl acetate phase (65-89%). THE microsomal enzyme epoxide hydratase (EC 4.2.1.63) is potentially important in the inactivation of metabolically produced epoxides which may be responsible for the mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties of polycyclic hydrocarbons (for reviews see refs 1–3).
