Ultrasound as a preservation technique

Abstract The application of ultrasound offers a wide range of possibilities in food preservation, especially when it is used combined with heat or other preservation treatments (natural antimicrobials). In this chapter, some relevant studies dealing with the impact of the ultrasound alone and/or combined with other preservation techniques on microbial inactivation from different food groups (fruits and vegetables, milk and derived products as well as fish and meat) will be discussed. In addition, some findings regarding the effects of ultrasound on nutritional and physicochemical properties of the products will be also presented.

Evaluation of a short food frequency questionnaire used among Norwegian children.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) against a four-day precoded food diary (PFD) with regard to frequency of food intake among Norwegian 9- and 13-year-olds. Subjects and design: A total of 733 9-year-olds and 904 13-year-olds completed first a short FFQ and one to two weeks later a four-day PFD. The short FFQ included questions about 23 food items, including different drinks, fruits, vegetables, bread, fish, pizza, sweets, chocolate and savoury snacks. The PFD covered the whole diet. Cauliflower inflorescences are harvested when they are still totally immature. On a Retarded Nonlocal Ordinary Differential System with Discrete Diffusion Modeling Life Tables

In this paper, we consider a system of ordinary differential equations with non-local discrete diffusion and finite delay and with either a finite or an infinite number of equations. We prove several properties of solutions such as comparison, stability and symmetry. We create a numerical simulation showing that this model can be appropriate to model dynamical life tables in actuarial or demographic sciences. In this way, some indicators of goodness and smoothness are improved when comparing with classical techniques.

Testing a new health indicator: using avoidable causes of death and life expectancy for Spain between 1975-1986.

The concept of avoidable cause of death serves as the basis for measuring the quality and diversity of a health care system. In this study the authors propose a new way to use this kind of mortality by combining with the concept of life expectancy to obtain what they call "life expectancy free of avoidable mortality" (LEFAM). This indicator was 76.9 in 1986 in Spain while life expectancy was 75.83. If these deaths were avoidable there would be a gain of 1.09 years per person born. There is an important difference between the would-be male gain of 1.76 years and the would-be female gain of 0.6.
