Natural Proteolytic Processing of Hemofiltrate Cc Chemokine 1 Generates a Potent Cc Chemokine Receptor (Ccr)1 and Ccr5 Agonist with Anti-HIV Properti…

2000

Hemofiltrate CC chemokine (HCC)-1 is a recently described human chemokine that is constitutively expressed in numerous tissues and is present at high concentrations in normal plasma. Using a cell line expressing CC chemokine receptor (CCR)5 as a bioassay, we isolated from human hemofiltrate an HCC-1 variant lacking the first eight amino acids. HCC-1[9–74] was a potent agonist of CCR1, CCR3, and CCR5 and promoted calcium flux and chemotaxis of T lymphoblasts, monocytes, and eosinophils. It also blocked entry of HIV-1 strains using CCR5 as coreceptor. Limited tryptic digestion of HCC-1 generated the active variant. Conditioned media from several tumor cell lines activated HCC-1 with a high ef…

Differences in Corneal Anatomy in a Pair of Monozygotic Twins Due to Continuous Contact Lens Wear

2003

Purpose To study the differences in the corneal anatomy in a pair of 31-year-old monozygotic female twins, one of whom has been a contact lens wearer for the past 15 years and the other is a nonwearer. Methods We analyzed the corneal thickness and the corneal endothelial cell density of the monozygotic twins and of two age-matched control groups, one made up of non-contact lens wearers (35 eyes of 35 patients; mean age, 29.32 +/- 2.83 years) and the other made up of soft contact lens wearers (30 eyes of 30 patients; mean age, 33.08 +/- 3.72 years; mean duration of contact lens use, 10.62 +/- 4.32 years). Five corneal thickness measurements were carried out with the Orbscan Topography System…

OCT for Assessing Artificial Tears Effectiveness in Contact Lens Wearers

2011

PURPOSE: To apply a commercially available high-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomographer (SOCT) to assess the change in tear volume after application of a new artificial tears formulation specifically developed for contact lens (CL) users. METHODS: Twenty OD from young healthy CL wearers (mean age, 24.7 ± 3.5 years) with refractive errors ranging from -0.75 to -2.50 D (mean, -1.56 ± 0.69 D) were examined. All subjects were fitted with Focus Dailies CL (Ciba Vision), and two drops of Blink Contacts (AMO), lubricating formulation specifically developed for CL wearers, were instilled after baseline measures. Tear meniscus volume (TMV) was measured immediately after and 1 min, 1…

Effects of LASIK on Corneal Endothelium Using the 15-kHz IntraLase Femtosecond Laser

2011

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of LASIK with the 15-kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser on corneal endothelium. METHODS: In a prospective, single-center clinical trial, 138 patients (mean age: 32.0±7.1 years [range: 21 to 42 years]) underwent femtosecond LASIK for the correction of myopia −0.75 to −9.00 diopters (D) and cylinder up to 3.25 D. Patients were divided into two groups: contact lens group (n=76) and non-contact lens group (n=62). Pre- and 12-month postoperative specular microscopy of the central corneal endothelium was performed. The integrity of the central endothelium was assessed in terms of endothelial cell density and percentage of hexagonality. RESULTS: In the contact lens gro…

Online Vs In-person Education: Evaluating the Potential Influence of Teaching Modality on Dry Eye Symptoms and Risk Factors During the COVID-19 Pande…

2021

OBJECTIVES: To assess the potential effects of switching to online lecture format on dry eye symptoms and dry eye disease (DED) risk factors. METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was conducted in 812 university students (mean age, 21.5±4.0 years). Participants were classified according to the number of hours the participants took online lectures into online students or in-person students. Respondents completed a total of three DED questionnaires (Ocular Surface Disease Index [OSDI]; 5-item Dry Eye Questionnaire; 8-item Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire) and were surveyed on dry eye risk factors contemplated by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II in a…

Visual performance with simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses.

2011

Purpose:  The aim was to assess visual performance after PureVision high addition multifocal contact lens (PM) fitting through contrast sensitivity measured under different illumination levels for both distance and near. Methods:  In a cross-over study, 20 presbyopic patients were randomly assigned to PM or spectacles. Near contrast sensitivity was measured with the Vistech VCTS 6500 system. Distance contrast sensitivity and distance visual acuity (VA) were measured with the Functional Vision Analyser under photopic (85 cd/m2) and mesopic (3.0 cd/m2) conditions, the latter also under two levels of induced glare: 1.0 lux and 28 lux. Near VA was measured by logMAR charts under approximately 8…

The negative predictive value of cervical interleukin-6 for the risk assessment of preterm birth.

2013

To determine the potential clinical use of cervical interleukin-6 (IL-6) as a negative predictor of preterm birth in symptomatic women.Observational prospective study carried out in a tertiary hospital. We studied 100 singleton pregnant women with threatened preterm delivery and intact membranes, between 24 and 34 weeks, recruited during the period 2006-2008. A cervical swab for IL-6 detection was taken and a transvaginal ultrasound scan was performed for measuring the cervical length.Five women delivered within 2 d and six women within 7 d. A high cervical IL-6 concentration was found in these women. The area under the ROC curve for cervical IL-6 was 0.97 for deliveries within 2 d after the…

Behavioural adaptations of argulid parasites (Crustacea: Branchiura) to major challenges in their life cycle.

2015

Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. Here we present a review of recent studies on the behaviour of Argulus spp, especially the aggregati…

The influence of the nature of the surface oxide on the adhesive fracture energy of aluminium-bonded joints as measured by T-peel tests

2008

Abstract Modification of aluminium alloy substrates microstructure and morphology by depositing new oxide layers on top of the metal surface has been investigated, with the aim of improving adhesion. The effect of treating the metal with boiling water or immersing it in a cerate bath has been studied by means of electron microscopy, contact angle measurements and peeling tests. The formation of pseudoboehmite layers or cerium conversion coatings both led to an increase in joint's adhesive fracture energy and more durable adhesive bonds with respect to joints obtained with “mechanically grinded only” substrates. Differences in the performance of the bonded joints has been discussed in terms …
