In this work, composites of isotactic polypropylene (PP) with three unvulcanized elastomers – terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene (EPDM), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) and copolymer of acrylonitrile-butadiene (NBR) – have been investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to create PP/elastomer blend composites of significantly different compositions (with an excess of PP, intermediate ones, and with an excess of elastomer) and to study the dependence of tensile behaviour and elastic properties on the blends with different component ratio. Necking behavior of low-density polyethylene-isotactic polypropylene blends: A morphological investigation

The tensile behavior of low-density polyethylene-isotactic polypropylene blends was investigated at room temperature. Neck formation and propagation along the whole length of the samples were observed for the whole range of composition. This behavior, which is not indicated by most data available in the literature, was examined in relation to sample morphology by scanning electron microscopy. The results of this investigation indicated some differences between the morphology of these materials and the morphology of blends which do not undergo necking propagation.

Recovery of dissolved methane through a flat sheet module with PDMS, PP, and PVDF membranes

Abstract A degassing contactor using a flat sheet membrane module (FM) was operated in sweep gas mode to study the performance of several commercial polymer membranes, both dense (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) and microporous (polypropylene, PP, and polyvinylidenefluoride, PVDF), for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Non-steady state experiments were conducted at different liquid (QL, 3.5–40.5 L h-1) and gas flow rates (QN2, 0.05–15.00 L h-1). In the case of PDMS, PP, and when PVDF was operated at moderate high QL (≥ 21 L h-1), similar methane removal efficiencies (RE) were obtained. Influence of high power ultrasound on physical-chemical properties of polypropylene films aimed for food packaging: barrier and contact angle features

Investigation was focused on the impact of high power ultrasound (HPUS), also called thermosonication, on the oxygen permeation properties (permeability, solubility and diffusion coefficients) of barrier films aimed for food packaging. For this purpose, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) coated with acrylic/polyvinylidene chloride (BOPPAcPVDC) and biaxially oriented coextruded polypropylene (BOPPcoex) were used. The physical–chemical profile of the samples was determined using goniometry. Mesophase formation in poly(propylene-ran-1-butene) by rapid cooling

Abstract The effect of random insertion of low amount of 1-butene of less than about 11 mol% into the isotactic polypropylene chain on structure formation at non-isothermal crystallization at different rate of cooling was investigated by X-ray scattering, density measurements, and atomic force and polarizing optical microscopy. Emphasis is put on the evaluation of the condition of crystallization for replacement of lamellar crystals by mesomorphic nodules on increasing the cooling rate/supercooling. Abstract Blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and hydrogenated oligo(cyclopentadiene) (HOCP) were investigated to gain structural information by means of both SAXS and SANS techniques. The composition range (from 30 to 60% w/w HOCP content) and the temperature range (between 25 and 160°C) were chosen in order to cover the miscibility gap in the phase diagram of the material system. In a previous report, blends lying outside the miscibility gap have been investigated and the corresponding SAXS patterns were interpreted in terms of a pseudo-two phase model. Structure, morphology and crystallization of a random ethylene-propylene copolymer

The structure, morphology, and crystallization behavior of a random ethylene–propylene copolymer, containing 2 wt % ethylene sequences, are analyzed and compared with those of a plain polypropylene sample by means of optical and scanning microscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and calorimetry. For the copolymer, different polymorphs (α, γ and smectic modifications) and morphologies can be obtained through changes in the crystallization and annealing conditions. The analysis of the structural results suggests that the γ phase of isotactic polypropylene can be generated for high molecular mass samples with drastic decreases in the undercooling. Calculation of small-angle neutron scattering by macromolecules in the semicrystalline state

The conformation of macromolecules in the semicrystalline state has been studied by various authors with respect to the validity of the adjacent re-entry — or switchboard model by application of small-angle neutron scattering. Analytical as well as Monte-Carlo calculations show that the experimental results for melt crystallized polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene can be interpreted on the basis of the solidification model. In this model it is assumed that crystallization occurs by straightening of coil sequences without a long range diffusion process.

Forest management has altered forested environments and provoked stress to many natural habitats and biodiversity. The goal of biodiversity management is the long-term persistence of populations in human-modified environments. We demonstrate a spatio-temporal modeling approach to address the relationship between various management objectives and population persistence in the long-term in a commercial forest landscape. The Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius’ status as an important forerunner of the Enlightenment is well recognized, bolstered by his famous etiamsi daremus-dictum in the Prolegomena of De iure belli ac pacis. Less well known is that Grotius was the first central Protestant thinker to redefine the concept of ius, so that it was understood as individual or subjective rights.
