A stereotactic device for rabbits based on mandibular and cranial landmarks

✓ The authors have developed a stereotactic device for use in rabbits that uses the plane at the base of the mandible combined with cranial sutures as an anatomical reference. The device was developed for a study designed to evaluate catheters for infection prophylaxis, and this required the implantation of silicone catheters along a reproducible trajectory through the lateral ventricle. Cadaver and atlas studies demonstrated consistent spatial relationships between intracranial structures and the surface plane on which the animals were resting during the surgery. Studies of Molecular Orientation and Order in Self-Assembled Semifluorinated n-Alkanethiols:  Single and Dual Component Mixtures

The structure, orientation and morphology of self-assembled monolayers of a semifluorinated n-alkanethiol, F(CF2)8(CH2)11SH (F8H11SH), have been investigated by polarized IR, angular dependent XPS, ToF-SIMS, contact angle, and ellipsometric measurements. The orientation of the all trans hydrocarbon segment was found to be tilted much less from the surface normal than the 30° tilt found for octadecanethiol. This has been attributed to the steric constraints imposed by the larger cross section fluorocarbon helices that subsequently are tilted from the surface normal. Steric vs. electronic stereocontrol in syndio- or iso-selective ROP of functional chiral β-lactones mediated by achiral yttrium-bisphenolate complexes

International audience; Origins of stereoselectivity in ROP of racemic chiral cyclic esters promoted by achiral yttrium complexes, resulting in the formation of highly heterotactic polylactide, and highly syndiotactic or, more uniquely, highly isotactic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)s, are discussed. A close interplay between the nature of the cyclic ester, most particularly of the exocyclic functional chain installed on the chiral center of β-lactones, and the ortho-substituents installed on the phenolate rings of the ligand, results in various determining secondary interactions of steric and also electronic nature.

Female genital schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma haematobium. Infected females may suffer from symptoms mimicking sexually transmitted infections. We explored if self-reported history of unsafe water contact could be used as a simple predictor of genital schistosomiasis. In a cross-sectional study in rural South Africa, 883 sexually active women aged 16–22 years were included. Questions were asked about urogenital symptoms and water contact history. Structural and morphological rearrangements in quenched poly(ethylene) by simultaneous SAXS/WAXS

Structure formation by crystallization from the melt in a wide range of cooling rates (0.08-1 000°C/s) in low-density polyethylene has been studied by simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering at the synchroton radiation source of DESY. The occurrence of two periodicities, characterized by different angular position of Bragg's maxima, was observed, pointing to the existence of two types of lamellar stacks, associated with two different long period values L 1 and L 2 (L 1 > L 2 ). Recent research has suggested that music and language processing share neural resources, leading to new hypotheses about interference in the simultaneous processing of these two structures. The present study investigated the effect of a musical chord's tonal function on syntactic processing (Experiment 1) and semantic processing (Experiment 2) using a cross-modal paradigm and controlling for acoustic differences. Superconducting tunneling spectroscopy on epitaxial UPd2Al3 thin films

Abstract Results of superconducting tunneling spectroscopy experiments performed on two different types of thin film planar junctions of the heavy-fermion compound UPd 2 Al 3 are presented. Cross-type junctions consist of the heavy-fermion base electrode, an insulating layer of native surface oxide and a metal counter electrode (Au or Ag). The contact resistance was only weakly temperature dependent down to the superconducting transition. In the superconducting regime a strongly reduced zero bias conductivity indicated the junction being of the superconductor-insulator-normal metal type. Microwave surface resistance of pristine and neutron-irradiated MgB2 samples in magnetic field

We report on the microwave surface resistance of two polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples; one consists of pristine material, the other has been irradiated at very high neutron fluence. It has already been reported that in the strongly irradiated sample the two gaps merge into a single value. The mw surface resistance has been measured in the linear regime as a function of the temperature and the DC magnetic field, at increasing and decreasing fields. The results obtained in the strongly irradiated sample are quite well justified in the framework of a generalized Coffey and Clem model, in which we take into account the field distribution inside the sample due to the critical state. Size dependence of the Josephson critical behavior in pyrolytic graphite TEM lamellae

We have studied the transport characteristics of TEM lamellae of different widths obtained from a graphite sample with electrical contacts at the edges of the embedded interfaces. The temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, are compatible with the existence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions. The transition temperature at which the Josephson behavior sets in decreases with a decreasing interface width and vanishes for widths below 200 nm.
