Connected Lands : new perspectives on Ecological Networks Planning

2017

The construction of an ecological network is a fairly complex operation, given that the components to be considered are strictly linked to the age-old problem of the relationship between man and the land, until now perhaps seen too much as a limiting relationship and not, as the use of this tool suggests, as a relationship to be safeguarded. It may represent the ideal way to reconcile human needs and the conservation of biodiversity for the sustainable management of land. This study on the ecological network represents a tool capable to contain habitat fragmentation trough a new perspective that integrates theoretical approaches and methods with planning models and experiences of local appl…

Cryptic diversity, niche displacement and our poor understanding of taxonomy and ecology of aquatic microorganisms

2022

AbstractThe analysis of ecological niche is an important task to correctly identify the role exerted by species within ecosystems, to assess their vulnerability, to plan effective measures addressed at fulfilling the postulates of biological conservation, and ultimately to prevent biodiversity loss. However, for the majority of organisms our knowledge about the actual extent of their ecological niche is quite limited. This is especially true for microscopic organisms. Evidence exists that in different geographical areas allegedly conspecific populations can show different, if not antithetical, ecological requirements and not-overlapping ecological niches. This opinion paper discusses whethe…

The species-specific monitoring protocols for plant species of Community interest in Italy

2017

The results of a project for the identification of species-specific monitoring protocols for the Italian plant species protected under the Habitats Directive (Annexes II/IV/V) are presented. The project led to the development of 118 monitoring factsheets, providing an operational guidance for 107 vascular taxa, 10 bryophytes and 1 lichen taxon. Each factsheet includes information on the species (distribution, biology, ecology, conservation status, threats, etc.) and the description of field methodologies for the detection of the two main reporting parameters, i.e. population size and habitat quality. Practical information to plan field activities are also given. Protocols were designed to a…

Fungi and Bacteria in Indoor Cultural Heritage Environments: Microbial-related Risks for Artworks and Human Health

2016

Cultural heritage constitutive materials can provide excellent substrates for microbial colonization, highly influenced by thermo-hygrometric parameters. In cultural heritage-related environments, a detrimental microbial load may be present both on manufacts surface and in the aerosol. In this study, bacterial and fungal colonisation has been investigated in three Sicilian confined environments (archive, cave and hypogea), each with peculiar structures and different thermo-hygrometric parameters. Particular attention has been paid to microorganisms able to induce artifacts biodeterioration and to release biological particles in the aerosol (spores, cellular debrides, toxins and allergens) p…

Towards a functional classification of the freshwater phytoplankton

2002

This paper considers the structure of freshwater phytoplankton assemblages and promotes a scheme of ‘vegetation recognition’, based upon the functional associations of species represented in the plankton. These groups are often polyphyletic, recognizing commonly shared adaptive features, rather than common phylogeny, to be the key ecological driver. Thirty-one such associations are outlined and the basic pattern of their distinctive ecologies is outlined. An invitation to other plankton scientists to assist in the development of this scheme is issued.

A stochastic model of seed dispersal pattern to assess seed predation by ants in annual dry grasslands

2005

A combined field experiment and modelling approach has been used to provide evidence that ants may be responsible for an observed lower patchiness and higher plant diversity in the neighbourhood of ant nests, within Mediterranean dry grasslands belonging to the phytosociological class Tuberarietea guttatae. The hypothesis was that seeds occurring in clumps may have an higher probability to be harvested than seeds having a scattered distribution. In order to test this hypothesis, four analysis steps have been performed. First, the seed productivity and dispersal pattern was recorded for four plant species found, either more abundant beside the ant nests (Tuberaria guttata, Euphorbia exigua) …

Contributo alla conoscenza della distribuzione di Monotropa hypophegea Wallr. (Ericaceae) in Italia

2015

The authors report the distribution of Monotropa hypophegea Wallr. in Italy by the analyses of herbarium specimens, bibliographic references and records in the field. Its national distribution is extended to Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Puglia Basilicata, Calabria and confirmed for Sicily. Some details concerning morphological characters are also provided to avoid confusion in identification with M. hypopitys L. the other congeneric species occurring in Italy. Furthermore, observations about ecology of these taxa are provided.

A new association of relict maquis with Ptilostemon greuteri (Oleo-Ceratonion, Quercetea ilicis), located in a circumscribed area of north-western Si…

2022

This paper illustrates the results of a survey aimed at deepening available knowledge on the ecology of Ptilostemon greuteri (Asteraceae), a very rare palaeoendemic and relict nano-phanerophyte discovered about 15 years ago on Monte Inici, near Castellammare del Golfo (province of Trapani, north-western Sicily). Two plant communities characterised by P. greuteri are described in detail; they occur in the locus classicus and in a second, recently discovered stand, which is also very localised and threatened by fire. The field investigations revealed that the sites where the species grows are very similar from the ecological point of view; in fact, both of them are located on the steep slopes…
